Should STAMPBOARDS have a LIVE CHAT feature?

a few things live chat can be :

- a quick place to ask Q's when your too scared to post in the forever version
- a place to talk in real time
- server hogging
- dirty
- a nightmare to police
- a great place to meet like-minded stampboarders
- you can say G'Day in real time

anyway, I just had the thought and I wonder. So have a vote.

We've had this discussion before on Stampboards and the general answer from me, most other members, Mods and Glen was

No, No, No and No.

Turning this place into an instant chat site would be of very little benefit to anyone in my opinion.

Some posts get a reply within seconds, which I guess is similar to a chat site.

Have to agree with Tassie_Stamps sorry Barry_E!

I tried a chat thingy a couple of times...altogether very annoying!

Response times to questions here on SB are generally very fast. And if it's not...there is generally a good reason!

No is my vote! I like things the way they are!

I also voted No, as I use Skype with a number of friends here and overseas where we can have a chat face to face .....and show each other stamps or covers we discuss.

...the board here is fast enough to get a reply fast! :D

Agree.

We are a permanent on-line archive and that is how it will stay whilst I have any say in matters.

The board software has the capability, and needs just one click to activate, but do not hold your breath waiting.

Mostly stampboards is faster than live chats on stamps!

So I voted NO!

Might be a way of attracting younger Board members - I'm sure they would rather see & talk to each other rather than post - I don't think todays young one's have the patience to wait for replies !

Anything posted on stampboards the information that is posted is here for as long as the board is on the web.

Live chat the information is lost as soon as the words are spoken.

clemo - you are only as young or as old as you act.

I know plenty 60+ who wouldnt dare touch a computer, I know plenty 60 - 70+ who can't live without their iPad / iPhone / Android / any other tiny piece of modern technology ! Often out doing their grand kids with their techological nous! (helps that they probably have the cash to do it too!)

Never too early, or late for a mid life crisis either I might add!!!

Well, I don't think we need one.
Stampboards has got knowledgeable members who are always ready to help novice philatelists like me.
We also have a lot of valuable data in the archives, and some generous members even encourage young philatelists by giving stamps!! :D

If we introduce a chat facility, the purpose of this board might get drifted!

I voted no, because of the following reasons:

1. In a chat function you can't attach any pictures or other supporting material.
2. It is unsystematic, because you can't start a 'real' thread or a reply on a thread. Therefore the information in a chat will be lost (or you have to scan zillions of chats, which is a pretty time-consuming task to do).
3. Finally, I think a chat feature would do prejudice to this 'official' board. There aren't any ads here as well, which is great  .

I have been on a live chatboard only a couple of times and the experience wasn't good.

You can post a comment then get an instant response which is all well and good as long as there's only you and one other person chatting.

Unfortunately in the real world you get multiple people chiming in with answers/responses and before you or any of the other people have time to answer there are more queries, answers, etc. coming out of the ether at such a rate that nobody gets the response they really wanted.

LIVE CHATBOARDS ARE TOTAL UNORGANISED CHAOS :!:

Stick with what works my friends, and Stampboards works
