Hello everyone and thanks for checking out my post. I have a collection of old postcards from around the 1900-1920 period with state and kangaroo series stamps attached and need some advice on sites to research these on. If anybody knows of a dealer who specializes or deals in postcards that would be a great starting point or any sites that would assist with the researching of these cards. Most have state series stamps attached and many of them with numeral cancels, I have a bit of an idea with the numeral cancels but any suggestions on sites that would assist that research would also be appreciated. Regards Ross

Hi Ross,

It would be really great if you could post some of these cards here.

Stampboards is a visual site, and we ask of our members when they have such questions to show the items.

You will get much better guidance this way as well.

Best Regards,
Joel.

Joel is right on the money, have a look at the tutorials for posting images if you aren't handy at that yet.

Dealers won't help you research the postcards, but they will buy them from you for cash. :)

Supply the colonial numeral cancels and we can help with the rarity of those too. Also if they aren't stationery postcards (ie. they're picture postcards), scans of the fronts will help too. :)

Ross, you should post an image of your postcards here on Postcard Heaven http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=376&start=900

Sorry it has taken a while but I needed to get a better scanner than what I had, I have scanned a number of these cards and will slowly load them a few at a time.

This one I find interesting as it seems to be receipt of a lost baggage claim.

Thanks for looking and any help would be appreciated, I am keen to learn the difference between the cancel types. Will load a few more over the coming days and hopefully learn a bit as well.

rossco, while I cannot offer you any technical or valuation information on your material, this is really superb looking stuff. Especially the Clifton Springs card which is not all that far from where I live (the Hotel unfortunately burnt down in 1921) - I used to fish in the Bay with my late father embarking from Clifton Springs. Thank you for sharing.

The pier at Postarlington hasn't changed much.

The railways one would indeed have been a standard baggage claim card. The main way to get to tourist destinations was by train and the railways produced cards (and posters) as a means to advertise this. I doubt if many of these survive. If you look, you will see it is labelled Victorian Railways Tourist Series. The picture looks like the caves at Buchan.

A shame the tick goes right through the OS stamp but on card that is not as much of an issue as if it was just the stamp.

Very nice collection.

Prestige had some of these in one of their auctions.

Melbourne cup day probably 1905 just a little different to the way the crowd looks these days.

Hi Norm I think I have another couple of Clifton Springs cards and if so will scan and load them, glad it could bring some happy memories to mind for you.

Hello also to you John I have just loaded a couple more and I certainly have others of the Exhibition Buildings and I think there may be more of Portarlington as well. I will check through them and scan those as well I know there is several from Point Lonsdale so maybe another one or two from Portarlington.

Thanks for taking an interest and hopefully many more will get some enjoyment out of these cards and I may learn a thing or two about them at the same time.

Hi Margo thank you I am glad you like them, I will be loading many more over the coming days or maybe weeks.

Thanks again. If you have postcards from St Leonards or Indented Head, as many of the Postcards you have shown to date seem to come from this part of the Bay area, I would love to see them, although I think my brain would explode of overload from my nostalgia gene.

Thank you for the heads up on this card, but I do have one in my collection. The Grandstand at Flemington seems to have been something of a landmark at that time as I have a number of different cards featuring it. The most unusual is the one below:

Image

According to the Port Melbourne Historical Society this card dates around 1920. Used by sales reps at "calling cards". I drove past the old Swallows & Ariel Factory on my way to Flemington yesterday, but of course today it has been converted to apartments. And the Grandstand at Flemington, well it is long gone.

Brad :)

PS One day I will start a thread on my Melbourne Cup & horse racing postcards but I still have a little research to complete before I can.

The writer of the Rossco's card above, showing the lawn & grandstand at Flemington, said he was going to the Cup on November 6. This is the finish of the 1905 Melbourne Cup with Blue Spec winning. Believe it or not these cards were printed & on sale within hours of the race & sold at "Coles" stores.

Image

I see that card was addressed to India. Horse racing in India was big at the time. The major race there was the Vice-Roy's Cup & it was not unusual for Australian Horses to be sold to India at that time. That reminds me of the story of Purser but we will leave that to another day & another thread.

Brad :)

Hello Ross

Below is the website of the Australian Cartophilic Society, I am sure if you join up someone there will be able to assist you. They also have an excellent quarterly journal

Another different version of the lawn & grandstand at Flemington

Image

Footscray duplex cancel (Footscray is a short distance from Flemington) & Le Treport France postmark applied upon redirection

As the card writer correctly said "Lord Cardigan" won the 1903 Melbourne Cup. He beat Wakeful who featured in the 2002 Year of the Horse stamps & used on this souvenir cover by Havilah Enterprises.

That was not the Coles supermarkets that we know these days but the Coles Book Arcade in Melbourne.
More here:
http://museumvictoria.com.au/collections/themes/1900/cole-s-book-arcade-collection

An excerpt:
Cole's Book Arcade was one of the great iconic stores of Melbourne in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It opened in 1873 in Bourke Street near Russell Street, and in 1883 moved to the site for which it became known, in what is now the Bourke Street Mall. It was a shop like no other, crammed with new and second-hand books and other wares, but with the atmosphere of a circus. Cole enticed customers of all ages with a menagerie and fernery, a band, a clockwork symphonion and other mechanical delights. Readers could sit in comfortable chairs, encouraged by a sign: 'Read for as Long as You Like - Nobody Asked to Buy'.
