Hello.

I would like to ask about the New Zealand "Lake Taupo" 1d 1898.

How many types of this stamp edition?

I get some stamps that the Lake section are coloured by blue instead of black. Is this a variety??

Hello, Mochi,

We've got a few New Zealand experts here - where's RolyRJ when we need him...

I've just edited your thread title so hopefully you'll get a few more replies.

Hi mochi,

as far as I know the Lake Taupo stamp from 1898 is always (yellow)brown and blue.
If you have one with a black inner part it might well be oxidized.

Regards,

Good morning!

The 1898 1d Lake Taupo exists without any watermark but with a range of perforations gauging from 12 to 16, and in 3 basic colours. These are identified in the NZ specialised Campbell Paterson catalogue as being:1) blue and yellow brown; 2) blue and chestnut, and 3) blue and chocolate brown.

In 1899 the Lake Taupo design was used as a 4d stamp and was reprinted several times until 1908. These stamps may be found with or without watermarks, in a range of perforations and in a range of shades.

The shades range from indigo and brown, through greenish blue and bistre brown, to blue and yellow brown.

I trust that this helps?

David.

David has described this stamp exactly for you.

I have studied this stamp (and the whole 1898 Pictorial series) for many years now and the only thing I can add to Davids nice explanation is:

There appears to be three different plates used for the Brown frame of this stamp and four plates were used for the Blue centre.

At first glance it would seem that there would be a huge number of combinations of these plates available but it seems like only six combinations were used.

If the Outside Frame Plates are numbered 1 - 3 and the centre plates are labeled A -D then the following combinations have been identified for this stamps.
1A, 1D, 2B, 2C, 3D, 3A

There are numerous re-entries in the Frame Plate but only one re-entry in the Centre plate that has been clearly identified so far.

You mention that the centre portion of the stamp(s) you have are black? As David has pointed out that is because the centre portion has oxidised. Another clue to oxidisation is having a very close look at the brown outer frame. If the ink appears to be raised and has a golden 'sparkle' to it you can be assured it is oxidised.

You probably have more information than you can handle on this stamp now but ai hope these comments have helped as well.

Just to finish and fill in a little on Daves comments, the design of this penny stamp and the 4d stamp were swapped over in 1900. The reason being, this penny stamp being a bi-colour had to go through the printing press twice. The Penny Stamp was the most common stamp in usage so it became expensive to produce the quantities needed. So in 1900 the two designs were swapped over. Therefore from 1900 on the 1d was now a mono colour stamp featuring the Terraces and the 4d (lesser used) became the bi-colour Lake Taupo.

Cheers
Roly

Hi Mochi

If you would like to see the New Zealand 1898 Lake Taupo up-close-and-personal check out my web site http://www.stamps4u.co.nz

Click on the Lake Taupo stamp and that will take you to a full sheet of Plate 2C which I have just finished plating.

Click on any stamp on the sheet and you will get an enlarged version of that stamp which I have divided into six segments.

Click on any segment and you will see a digital microscope scan of that segment with any flaws and faults noted. :)

Have fun.

Cheers

Roly

For some reason you get the warning using Firefox, but not using IE.

Hmmmm thanks for the heads up Andrew.

I have a bit of code that detects if someone is trying to do a right mouse click so they can copy my images ans it is probably that which is screwing up in a Firefox browser.

The rest of the page is just straight HTML with nothing fancy,

Cheers

Roly

Roly, it isn't on a Right Click that it doesn't work with Firefox . It is with a left click !! Which means that Nobody with Firefox can look.

Thanks Fletches

OK I am going to have to think of another way to protect all my hard work :)

I will rewrite the code and put up a couple of dummy pages shortly and then see how they go.

Cheers

Roly

I have never done that much original work that I need to protect it, but I think there is a way to Watermark your images if they are copied. A bit of Google may help. Or I wouldn't be at all surprised for the solution to be put up here for you.
