How can one tell if the Buenos Aries 1858 issue is real or counterfeit ?
Scott 2011 Buenos Aires #1 and #2

Mod note:

Fixed it for you. You need to set your Photobucket account to show scans no more than 800 X 600

The image is too big to use on the post so you need to resize it.

Probably (99%) they're counterfeit. :(

Make that 100%. The margins are too large, and the paper is wrong.

Does anyone have a real copy to show for comparison ?
I understand that the real copies have a very high price tag.

Thanks all, for the comments. My counterfeits look more nice
than the real thing. Are the fakes worth anything?

Hi Folks,

Based on the discussion here it seems virtually certain that this is a fake, but can folks confirm that?

Those stamps have been widely forged. Unless they have a certificate, always assume they're forgeries. I think genuine copies have smaller margins than these.

I was going through an old album compiled during the 1940's and 50's and came across this little specimen in the Brazil section... Scott says there are known forgeries of this imperf series, which is what I suspect I have here, as my 1990 Scott lists this at $4250 mint / $1700 used. Anyone able to tell from these scans?

It is not genuine.

Among other things, the margins are far to big for it to be a genuine stamp.

Mod Note:

I have taken the opportunity to merge several threads posted over a number of years about the Buenos Aires series. So, (hopefully) the discussion is now all in one place. If I come across any more older threads specifically about these stamps, I will add them to this thread.

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina. A complete different country from Brazil!

I just check the whole thread: *all* the 'Barquitos' posted here until now were fake! :( Now, I also like to said that you seem to mostly quote the Scott as source of info for this series... and thats a bad start: the Scott its a very generalistic catalog, good for certain things... but outrageously BAD for classical philately!

The 'Barquitos' in particular are truly dangerous, due the abundant forgeries out there... some, quite crude, but others... just be careful! (expertice from real owners of real 'Barquitos' its a must) For online information, start here:

http://foro.filateliaargentina.com.ar/viewforum.php?f=48
http://barquitos1858paley.blogspot.com.es/

My two cents!

PS: All the Austrian are original (but on the other side, they don't worth much), as well the Germanias (and if my memory doesn't fail, those se-tenant duo came from a stamps booklet)

Stumbled upon a couple of Buenos-Aires stamps last night, I honestly don't have a clue about them or what I need to look out for fake-wise.

The printing does look rather crude in places

Any information is most appreciated ;-)

If you "stumble on them" or "find them in a kiddie's collection", they're fakes.

Why?

Because they always are!

I've said it numerous times on Stampboards: this is one of those areas where you should assume what you have is a fake - unless you have COMPELLING evidence to the contrary.

I did state that they look rather crude in places, therefore, I am assuming they are fake

But what is wrong with asking the knowledgeable members here for some level of confirmation one way or the other?

Nothing wrong at all! And sorry if my reply came across as curt (not intended!).

It's simply one of those areas that comes up time and again. Hopefully someone will be able to give you a more "technical" and less "seat of the pants" reason. In the meantime, if you do a search for Buenos Aires I'm sure you'll find a number of other threads on it.

But I bet you the mortgage that I'm right.

Cheers Gavin, found a thread here relating to these......... FAKES!

Apparently the originals are on thin paper and of a much lighter shade.
