Ok this one is confusing, maybe simple in others eyes. Is it a BN or some other type of cancel maybe used by private company?

Thanks for looking

Micky, what you have there is a very messy double strike of Sale's (bn 72) fifth duplex. If you enlarge the image a bit more on your scanner you'll be able to make out the 'S' of Sale over the top of the '7'.

The skeleton datestamps on this range of duplexes differed from earlier ones in that they used dd.mm.yy under the hour.

First thing that comes to mind.

1. Albert Park. Vic.

2. East Bentliegh. Vic.

1. What would the letters S.C.S. (or whatever that last letter is) after Park be for ?
2. Is it Bentleigh's East as opposed to how you have it written, as there is an s followed by a full stop after the h ?

They are postal district designators ... the pre-cursors of our postcodes.

SC6 = South-Central-6, or something like that.

They have been discussed on Stampboards before, but I can't find the link right now.

The S.C.6. is the postal district, somewhat like out present postcodes.

Check out type 70 and 110: https://www.premierpostal.com/cgi-bin/w ... ds.w?po=36

From memory Bentleigh East and East Bentleigh are interchangeable and thee S.E. at the end is the postal district again.

Many thanks guys for your help, I'll need to bear in mind the codes at the end of more modern postmarks. I've never seen that page before Traralgon, very informative.

I have another query, what does this one look like ? I've darkened it to make it easier.

That info is free on the A's. Subsrcibe and you get that info on all the alphabet.

These postal district codes were used only in metropolitan Melbourne and Brisbane, up to the late 1960's when the present four-digit codes were introduced Australia-wide. The district codes were based on the same principle as for London - the letter(s) roughly indicated the compass direction from the city centre; and the number very roughly indicated the distance from the centre

Hmm I guess with this one I'm more like asking for confirmation rather than asking what is it. It's a KYOGLE postmark, but I just notice the smaller letters in front of it, would I be right in assuming it's GREVILLIA ?

Possibly 'New Park' via Kyogle? Kyogle replaced the original office in 1903

PPA auction 84 had this entry: 1496 Δ A A2 Rukenvale: ‘[RU]KENVALE VIA KYOGLE/14AP51/N.S.W.‘ on
KGVI 3d red. PO 6/9/1928; closed 30/11/1971.

So I guess that's what it's likely to be Rukenvale Via Kyogle.

This postmark appears to be from BLAXLAND EAST, I'm assuming it's NSW ? No reference to Blaxland East in PPA site. Anyone know when opened ?

Is this likely to be Postmarked Fremantle Railway Station ? It appears to be the only WA postmark ending in Station on PPA site.

Clemo it might be Bungalla, the town was gazetted in 1910. Google helped a little on this one :D .

There appears to have been a town called BUNGULLA according to wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bungulla,_Western_Australia presumably it had a post office at some point. But then again it is wiki so perhaps someone from W.A. could tell us more.

SNAP :D
Just checked again and there's certainly streets shown on google street maps, so it's still there, must Just have been missed or not known to PPA

Apparently on the main route between Perth and Kalgoorlie - perchance something to do with the water supply :?:

I went through my maps (which only date back to the 1950s) and although Tammin [a few kilometres west] shows up, there's no sign of Bungulla. It must have been a short-lived settlement :?: :?: :?: There's precious little left there now :?

It had definitely slipped off the radar by the time the postcodes were introduced in Australia in 1967

Yes mcgooley, I just checked Google Earth and see nothing at all but farms.
Here are the co-ordinates Latitude 31° 57’ Longitude 117° 35’, used to be a railway station, now it looks part of a cattle station  , might have a rariety here clemo. Nice 8)

David (PPA) clearly states that W.A. is incomplete. I have a very short list that was compiled by the W.A. Study Group back in 1984 - "co-ordinated by Brian Pope" - so it is possible that someone out there has more information on Bungulla.

If anyone has access to a U.P.U. list of Australian Post Offices from this era, then we should be able to put it to bed. I believe there was one put out in about 1912-1914 :?:

My thanks to Donald, Micky, and mcgooley for the input on this place - Bungulla seems to be its name!

One to keep in the hope that some more info rears its head.

Hi Clemo

Bungulla Post Office closed sometime in 1944. Postmark is rated 2, known to exist in low numbers more frequently as part impressions.

You'll need to give me a push on this one, other than the Railway Station postmark and the Town Hall Postmark's last day of use being the same 22/10/1907, I don't follow why your avatar may help ?

The ratings come from the Western Australian Postal Markings Compendium copyright R & J Goulder. It is available from Chalon Stamps in Falcon, WA.
