Some of my mint stamps come from the edge or corner of a sheet and hence have an extra bit hanging off the edge (don't know what that edge bit is called). I've always just left them alone, but sometimes feel they would look nicer without the attached edge. Are there general guidelines on what makes sense regarding keeping or removing the edge piece? Does it matter if the edge piece has markings (numerals, coloured dots, other print)? I'm sure this has been asked before, but I haven't found the right keywords to search -Thanks.

It's called selvedge.
