The stamp is this one:

The above stamp was part of the 1961 local set issued by Bahrain. The cancel appears to be from Das Island, Abu Dhabi. I can make out the "ND". Pity about the year...

Has anyone seen another one like this - perhaps used on cover?

A bit of background: Abu Dhabi used the so-called "values only" issues of the British Postal Agencies in Eastern Arabia from the time its post office opened on 30 March 1963 to 29 March 1964. On 30 March 1964 Abu Dhabi issued its own stamps.

Best wishes,
AndrewG

Andrew, I haven't seen one, but it probably matches Neil Donaldson's 'The Postal Agencies in Eastern Arabia and the Gulf' page 236-8.

He notes ' This arrangement continued until, on March 30th 1963, British Agency Post Offices were opened in Abu Dhabi ... Das Island ... its Post Office was situated in the Postal Superintendent's Office in Bahrain.'

So, Das Island PO in the Bahrain PO, so a simple mix up at sometime?

Hi Jack,

Thanks for your comment and Donaldson reference.

Perhaps a mix-up, perhaps the stamp was used on a letter from a worker on Das Island to a local resident?

In any case, I was surprised to see it. I found it on Delcampe.

Best wishes,

I couldn't see any ref to the stamp usage but this link details the datestamp.

http://www.abu-dhabi-stamps.com/postali ... s=0&page=1

And there is a lot of info on the various Gulf States but some of the pages seem to have stopped working, which is a great shame as the area is an interesting one, with much still to be recorded.

Hello Sark,

Thanks for your suggestion. The information is helpful. I hope that the site is back soon.

Some other resources for this area include:

T.E. Jones:

A Postal History of the Arabian Gulf Post Offices, Volume 1: Bahrain, Second Edition 2007

A Postal History of the Arabian Gulf Post Offices, Volume 2: Kuwait, Revised Edition April 2009

The Postal History of Kuwait, Volume 2: The Postal Markings, Revised Edition April 2009

A Postal History of the Arabian Gulf Post Offices, Volume 3: Oman, Reprinted March 2009

A Postal History of the Arabian Gulf Post Offices, Volume 4: Aerogrammes, Part 1 1942 to 1966, Third Edition February 2009

The above should be available directly from T.E. Jones.

The paper-bound books are invaluable for their information and pictures of the stamps and postal history.

Neil Donaldson also published an addition to his The Postal Agencies in Eastern Arabia and the Gulf in 1994 I believe. The Postal Agencies in Eastern Arabia and the Gulf itself was reprinted in 2008. The 1994 volume includes additions and corrections, as well as some more pictures of stamps, markings and postal history.

The site www.philabooks.com may have some of these books.

Please feel to add more resources!

Best wishes,
AndrewG
