India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a lone athlete (Norman Pritchard) winning two medals in athletics. India is scheduled to take part in the 2012 Summer Olympics to be held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The Indian government plans to spend over Rs. 2500 million in preparing for the games, including around Rs. 200 million on foreign coaches for various events. Ajit Pal Singh has been named the chef de mission of the Indian contingent by the IOA.

Rs. 2500 million ~ 43.76 millions US$ ~ 43.54 million AU$
Rs. 200 million ~ 3.50 millions US$ ~ 3.48 million AU$
TODAY EXCHANGE RATES. Rs. means Indian Rupees ...
however, large amounts for a great country and people
certainly few of us didn't know how much money can buy with "Rs. 2500 million" !

Well, our Govt is spending a lot on Olympics..
it has a special programme for "Gold Quest" in Olympics.
Well, now I just hope we win at least 2 gold medals.

Hi all!
Vijender Singh became the first boxer from India to win an Olympics medal when he won the bronze medal at Beijing Olympics in 2008. A top-ranked boxer in the middle-weight category, he also won a bronze at the World Amateur Boxing Championships the very next year.

From an unknown village boy, Vijender has now become one of the top sporting icons of the country. Despite having attracted huge media and public attention, Vijender’s focus has not really shifted. His on-court performance has increased over the years. His qualification for London Games proves that the boxer is in good shape and can win us an Olympics medal this time too.

He has recently said that he is happy with my preparations so far and that he is preparing really hard for the London Games. The seven member Indian boxing contingent is very good. We have many hopes from them. Shiva Thapa, who is just 18, is an excellent boxer. He can win a medal. Apart from him, we have Vikas Krishan and Sumit Sangwan, anybody can win medal for us this time.

India could have easily won a medal in Doubles Tennis event and also Mixed doubles. But due to the Ego clash Between Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes I now doubt if we could win a medal in Tennis.

Talking giant Olympic rings. What will they think of next.

Our last giant Olympic Rings (Sydney 2000) are sitting in the manufacturers yard in Goulburn rusting away. I can drive past and see them anytime.

I can't recall if these were the one on the bridge or the top of the AMP building.

There was talk of putting them up as some sort of sculpture (not in the classic olympic style) but apparently 'that's not on with those rings'.

And no one else wanted some premade dismountable rings.

I have not checked but my memory says that they were on the Centrepoint Tower.

I could suggest that the rights to display those rings would still be held by IOC and that public display and/or alternate use may not be allowed after the games are finished??

Found them, they were the ones hanging on the Harbour Bridge.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/s ... 5925615971

When you see the picture and you know the size of the bridge, these rings are HUGE!

They should have thought about the nation!
But they have that ego problem as most of us Indians know!

INDIA HOPES FOR AN OLYMPIC MEDAL FROM ARCHER DEEPIKA KUMARI!
Deepika Kumari is the best Indian archer at present for India. She is one of the brightest hopes for an Olympic medal. After a good outing during the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games, Indians would like to see a repeat performance. Sadly, her success is not being documented in the mainstream media as she deserves all the plaudits.

India also hopes a medal from M. C. Mary Kom.
Mother-of-two Mary Kom, otherwise known here as 'Magnificent Mary,' is under all kinds of pressure while aiming, as she is, at winning one of the first Olympic medals ever awarded in women's boxing.
The 29-year-old Mary Kom is praised on TV documentaries, on local news media and internet blogs for encapsulating the essence of women from her region.

A gentle, motherly figure out of the ring, with a lavish ponytail and a penchant for colourful fabrics, she's tenacious once she puts on the gloves. Mary Kom won four of her world titles in the 46-kilogram category and one at 48 kilograms. But she will have to contend with the top names in the 51-kilogram category in London, including two-time world champion Cancan Ren of China and Nicola Adams of Britain.

Whoever sees Sushil Kumar these days has only one request — get a gold medal at the London Olympics. Sushil (66kg) qualified for the London Olympics at his third attempt, giving his camp some nervous moments. But they always believed in him. Last year Sushil was not at his best at the World Championships, also a qualifying event. He had a month-long training stint at Colorado Springs in the US in January and even won gold at the Dave Schultz Memorial International Wrestling Tournament, but failed to qualify at the Asian qualification meet in Astana in February. He was pegged back by a shoulder niggle.

But he practised with purpose and finally made it through at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Taiyuan, China, in April. In the final, he defeated Georgian Otar Tushishvilli, also a Beijing Olympics bronze medallist, to win the gold.

The IOC is famous for how tenaciously they guard the Rings and related Olympic trademarked symbols. There was the brou-ha-ha a couple Games ago, where they demanded the right to grant approval to all countries' designs for stamps which were going to have the rings emblem. So some countries just issued stamps with sports themes, but no rings or direction mention of the Olympics.

I think Allanswood summed it up
Allanswood wrote:

So keeping the rings as-is was nyet, but so to about doing anything else with them. So they age not-so-gracefully in a scrapyard. :? No wonder its so expensive to host the Games, when there's silly money-pits like that.

THE INDIAN PEOPLE ALSO HAVE MANY HOPES FROM P.T. USHA, NICKNAMED "PAYYOLI EXPRESS"!
The sprinting queen Usha hailed ace shuttler Saina Nehwal for her recent victories in the Thailand and Indonesia open. Ahead of the 2012 London Olympics, India is riding high on the success of ace tennis duo Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi who clinched the mixed doubles title at the French Open recently, followed by champion shuttler Saina Nehwal's twin victory at the Thailand and Malaysian Open few days back. Also, the country's is desperately seeking a gold in boxing from five-time world champion Mary Kom who is already being seen as India's best-shot Olympics.

Sania Mirza, India's tennis star was awarded a wild card entry into thewomen's doubles event of the London 2012 Olympics. It has finally ended the suspense over her participation in the event and also made her eligible to compete in the mixed doubles competition in which our India is hopeful of winning a medal.
It may be recalled that mixed doubles is included in the Olympics for the first time since 1924.

Whenever the Olympic are held, I do always remember the late Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav! He was widely known as "Pocket Dynamo" and he was independent India's FIRST individual Olympic medalist. Late Jadhav won the freestyle wrestling bronze medal at the 1952 Helsinki Games.

He suffered a lot of financial problem to go to Helsinki but he somehow managed. When he returned with the medal to his homeland, he did not get much publicity (as medalists and even participants today do).

There were no televisions at that time in India. There small felicitation for him at Mumbai's Shivaji Mandir auditorium in Dadar. Interestingly there was also a cavalcade of 101 bullock carts from Karad to his village.

Image

For nearly half a century, his would remain the only individual medal for India at the Olympics until Leander Paes won a bronze in 1996. Jadhav passed away on August 14, 1984.

Ultimately, India as a nation realized her forgotten hero and made a remarkable stadium in Delhi for wrestling and honored it by naming it as K D Jadhav stadium. This stadium is at par with the best in the world

With just a month left for the London Games, Olympic-bound Indian paddlers Soumyajit Ghosh and Ankita Das will leave for Zhengding, China on Sunday for a 16-day long training camp.

The two paddlers will be joined by Anthony Amalraj and Kumaresan Shamini as sparring partners along with Polish coach Leszek Kucharski. They have been practicing hard at the SAI centre Patiala, but Zhengding is one of the world`s best training centres. A training stint there ahead of the Olympics will definitely help the performance of the players in London

There were medals of NO colour for near 50 years?

Hard to believe for a country so populous?

It is not about money all the time - look at distance runners from Kenya and Ethiopia for instance - they seemingly always medal!

Well, to be frank; I think the government never did focus totally on earning Olympic medals.
But in recent years, we are seeing some hope.
The "Gold Quest" programme by Ministry of Sports & Youth Affairs, Govt. of India has gained some seriousness.
And now, people are also damn serious about such things.
And I agree, we need determination (which Indian sportspersons certainly have!) and support as well!

India's first issue of Olympic stamps was to commemorate the 1968 Olympics which were held in Mexico city (Mexico).
Two stamps were released.
The one below is of Twenty Paise (100 Paise makes One Indian Rupee) denomination.

While the one below is of Rupee One denomination.

The Olympic gymnastic trials for the US will be taking place this

I appreciate the way it's designed, using landmarks and identities of the London city! :D

Good way to raise money!

Dear Kevin!
I called it famous as many philatelic sites, blogs, sites have exhibited this stamp at their prime space.
Also, I love the way it's designed! :)
