Could you imagine how the conversation would have gone.

May 1, 1840

Today I received notice from post office that they will issued a 1 penny black stamp on May 6.

Is this new ? Do you think it will last ?

They say in the publicity it is only one stamp. colour black. But then they say it will have different letters in each corner.

Typical post office, say it one value but all different stamps. They never learn !
All they want is to rip off the stamp collector. I will have buy a whole sheet to get each different letter combination on a FDC.

Nothing has changed in 150 years has it................

Collector 4 - Now I hear the b*stards have issued it in at least ELEVEN different plate numbers I'll have to collect the lot I suppose.

And the Mulready's .. and not just an envelope but a lettersheet as well. AND the same for the 2d value in both stamps and stationary. What a rip-off for the collector.

That does it .. these new issues have got totally out of hand.

Another collector in the year of our Lord 1840 wrote; I picked up enough of these 'Black Queen
Victoria 1d labels' to fill my pillow today, I do not see any other use for them..........

RowlyHill1 - "fellow servants, lets change the ink to black and make it impossible to remove."

UnderlingZ - "but boss, the stamp IS black."

RowlyHill1 - "then we change the stamp to Red! And make 300 different plates of them. That'll confound the blighters and give them a page 2 for their album."

QueenyVic - "My husband and I wish to discover if your have become Communist making ones somber appearance Red? An why does the back of my head always feel wet?"

MarketBunny - "Oh I'll pay 2 pence for every mint black one you have."

DrWho - "Hey you lot, stop stuffing up history."

...but a very short one - she was only 4' 11'' at best, and had shrunk to 4' 7" by 1901.
