Having been born next to a river myself I do enjoy a bit of angling. But even though this forum is based close to some of the best fishing spots in the world I haven't seen mention made of some oceanic experiences on the high sea. Are there no other anglers about?

At my west Texas home, eating fish (catfish) (why catch fish otherwise?) from the Rio Grande would be like signing your own death warrant, a bit like fish from the Thames 50 years ago. I'm also about 300 miles from the "high seas".

In NY, a whole different story but I'm not going to write anything that may incriminate me.

:D  :D  :D

In the UK we throw them back if it is from a lake or river. Especially the big ones. They even give some of the fishes in some lakes individual names. Honestly.

Still love to fish if chance arises.... best fishing memory involved being sixty miles out on 'Charter Boat" in Gulf of Mexico pulling up large Red Snapper two at a time on double hook rig. Fishing some fifty / sixty feet down- it's a long haul to bring 'em up. First time to see the blue ocean... of course this was back in those halcyon days of the early 1960s..... I've always laughed at how someone with a large brain (us) may or may not win struggle to land critter with a pea-sized brain aka, Rainbow Trout.

I fish when I can, but that's not often. I still love it though. I live near the world's largest freshwater commercial fishing port. In Ontario there is fishing out the wazoo. Perch, bass, walleye, whitefish, catfish, carp, steelhead, salmon, trout, muskellunge, pike, sunfish, crappie, etc. etc.

I eat the stuff I catch too.

He took a 'pilchard' on a four ganged hook, light line with a 60lb "leader" (trace), similar to the one below

Image

I buy size 3/0 & 4/0 'Mustard' hooks and use 3 or 4 ganged hooks depending on the size of the Pilchard.

Image

I buy the Pilchards in a frozen 1kg (2.2lbs) pack and place them in layers in an airtight dish. I then spread each layer with rock salt and refrigerate, this hardens them up so they are not so easy to pull off the hooks. I usually do this the night before our beach trip.

We were actually chasing Tailor which only run here during our colder months (May - August). Because of the "burley" (a mixture of tuna cat food, minced meat and bread, mixed in a food processor) from the Pilchards we catch Bream Stingray, sharks and anything. We release these and release the very large Tailor as they are the breeders....

  Managed to buy a cheap second hand food processor (kept in my shed) as I was NOT allowed to use the one in the kitchen, it is restricted for food preparation only.......

We are starting to get some good size Tailor off the beach but it is a little early yet.

An average size Tailor is 35cm (legal length NSW 30cm - 11.8 inches). We have a bag limit of 20 which I regard as far too high. We take 2/3 maximum as that satisfies our needs until the next trip.

Here are three Tailor and two Sea Bream on the left.

Image

 Hope you find this interesting.

Colin

What do the Tailor taste like? Taste as compared to internationally famous fish.... What is the fight like on these and the bream?

The tailor is an active, hard-fighting fish but the trick is finding them first.

I’ll never forget the first tailor I caught off Tacking Point rocks Port Macquarie in 1988. It wasn’t only my first real sport-fish, but also my first fish using ganged hooks and a 3.7m (13ft) beach rod. It was late morning and I had just bought my first rig.

The surprise of being caught off-guard when the line starts to scream is what makes Tailor fishing so exciting. The funny thing was that if you looked at the patch of water where the fish came out of, there was no way of knowing there was a school of tailor lurking below the surface. They hang around in schools usually, so when you hit a patch of them the fun begins.

It’s no secret that at sunrise and sunset, tailor are much more active as they are specialist low-light hunters.

I describe catching a tailor is like hooking onto a steam train as they just take off with the bait and the line screams out. I loosen the drag so they can run, continually adjust it, then just play them with the surf until they tire.

They rarely take bottom baits but chase, so you catch them by casting out and and slowly retrieving. I know a heap of people use lures and soft plastics but I prefer the pilchard.

You can see by the shape of bream they are a wider fish and don't put a fight like tailor but when they turn on their side you think you have a monster on board. They tire easily but are still fun to catch.

Tailor taste:

Some people say they are a dry fish and you shouldn't freeze them as they loose what taste they have.

I disagree, maybe it is the way we cook them.

I bleed them immediately and I find this does make a difference.

To cook them I place the fish, whole, in a large piece of foil then I add coconut milk and a can of peaches. I enclose the packet leaving a breathing hole. Bake at 180C (350F) in the oven for approx. 20 minutes per 500g (1.1lb). This can vary but we love them with a fresh salad.

The larger ones I fillet and grill with various condiments.

Bream taste:

For me Bream is the best eating fish found in our waters.
They also tend to come in one fish one portion sizes which makes life easy in the kitchen!!
One downside for me is that you sometimes have to pick round the bones but this is made up for in the taste. It might take ages to catch a legal size bream but because of the taste it is worth it.

Really don't know what to compare it with.

Cheers

 Colin

Oh, bluefish, OK. I don't think I've ever been turned of by any fish I've had. Maybe Hake, but that's a fish that demands being eaten very fresh. I can take a whole mackerel and just throw it on the grill and eat it just like that. I like sardines out of the can.

Here are some of my favourite eating fish:

Lake Erie Perch and Pickerel (Walleye)
Various Salmon, Coho and King probably the best
Mahi-Mahi
Halibut
Cod
Grilled Tuna

I have caught Mahi Mahi in North Queensland, nickname (dolphin fish) but nobody buys a fish fillet with the "dolphin" name.

The seafood retail shops sell heaps of it here and most is caught in Queensland but not sure if around here.

Have eaten most of the ones you mentioned.

Asking if members are able to post their "ice fishing" experiences photos on this thread.

Image

It is on my "bucket list" but it is not cold enough here.

I have never gone "fly fishing" for trout but it is only a two hour drive away up in the mountains, and plan to go in Spring..

:) :) :) "Grumpy Old Men" sparked the flame for ice fishing :) :) :)

You have to cut holes and move around until you find a spot, but once you find them, it's just one after another after another.

Back to Mahi Mahi, someone at my wife's school wouldn't try it because they thought it was dolphin!
