Solo uses of this cover have made almost A$200 at auction, see here:

http://www.rap.com.au/vPages.asp?vPagesID=MAY%2008

(Although note that the image is wrong - look for the text talking about 'Figure 4')

I would like to swap this for a solo use of one of these:

1974 35c Christmas
1975 45c Christmas

Scott, for the 1975 Xmas, I assume you mean within the correct period of use. I recall getting at least two letters from dealers in the 1990's when 45 cents was the standard letter rate which would be classed as "solo use" but I would not think meet your requirements

Norm.

Yes, in period of use - say before April of the following year or so.

My apologies, I should have included this.

I licked 20 of these 1979 onto letters tonight to mail bills payments and letters etc.

However solo used in correct PERIOD would be tough.

Used in the correct period but is a pair better or worse than a solo?

Bit of a tough call. Guess it depends on the collector.

If the pair is paying the correct rate, then a 'rate collector' would be happy with it (someone was posting a letter, didn't have any of the int'l stamps on hand, so they used 2 domestic--in Canada the int'l rate was for a long time x2 the domestic, so that was easy).

On the other hand a 'used on cover' collector would want a solo usage to demonstrate usage of that stamp for its intended rate.

I would take either. :D

But usage collectors would prefer solo usage.

Hi How desirable is a $1.20 hang gliding commercial solo usage (1990) on envelope cover to England??

I cannot see any that have been sold to compare..

Thanks RussellA

Hi Russell

I think these must be fairly common as I picked up a dozen yesterday, and I never find anything even remotely scarce.

The ones I got are all dated 1992 - 1993 and 9 of them are solo usage.

They are all addressed to Bristol from Perth and Fremantle.

It seems with a quick look through the ASC that the $1.20 Hang Glider was first issued on 27 Aug 1990. The next definitive issue wasn't until 12 Aug 1993 ($1.20 Pink Cockatoo).

There were a few commemorative $1.20 stamps issued in between but the post office more than likely held plenty of stock of the definitive issues.
