I have been designing a stamp album for my Ukrainian collection, mostly because I wanted to have descriptions of my stamps underneath them. I have finished pages from 1992-1999 and am currently in the middle of doing 2000. I figure it will take me a good six months to turn around and get everything through 2012 done. Then I can loop back and do the 1918-1919 releases.

I have been posting my pages on a web site I made just to host these files. I have posted both PDFs of my pages, and the original pictures and Scribus (Scribus is the DTP program I am using to create the files) files, so you can make your own changes.

The site is http://www.stamphacks.com

I have posted about this before, but I have completely redesigned the pages, and have gotten much farther along that I had previously, so I figured it deserves it's own post.

I hope someone else can make use of these pages.

What a huge amount of work but the pages look great.
Very generous of you to share.

Thank you for adding the picture. I should have thought of that.

Very nice job! I thought I was the only one on this planet making album pages using Scribus...

I am working with an USSR album for myself, with Swedish translations. Yes. A Sisyfos job, I don't even speak Russian. But 1923-1982 for stamps and 1971-1984 for "postcards with special stamp printed" (what's the English word?) is finished.

But your album is more beautiful. I don't use pictures at all.

My initial idea was to use Scott Catalog numbers for the stamps (I'm in the US). I contacted Amos and asked their permission to use their Scott catalog numbers in an album of Ukrainian postage stamps I was planning to give away for free.

Their licensing department replied telling me, that, even though I was giving the pages away for free, they consider my album a direct competitor to their own stamp album of Ukrainian stamps. Fair enough....

So, I figured, if I was going to give pages away for others to use, I need to have some way for people to identify the stamps. Ukrainian uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Getting stamps to match up to descriptions written in English would be a chore for anyone that can't read the Ukrainian language.

So I added in the pictures. And I thought the pages looked pretty good with the pictures there.

Scribus is working well for me. I wanted to find something that allows me to caption a photo on the top AND bottom, and I tried everything all the way up to Adobe InDesign. Since nothing did it, I decided to why not use Scribus. It's free, exports to PDF out of the box, and had pretty much all that I needed.

Very nice work indeed. By any chance do you print these pages, and if yes do you use any particular paper type?

Thanks

For my personal use, I am printing them out on 100% cotton paper. I don't print and sell pages, though that may be a future option if I ever get the whole album done.

Download for free, or I print them and mail them to you for the cost of paper, toner, and postage. Not even close to there yet...

Thanks for the update.

Actually I was just curious about the paper typically used when printing such album pages.

Regards

Great work you are working through this pretty quickly. Do you have any plans to do any other countries?

I was debating doing Ireland and I am definitely doing 21st Century US. I collect US, Ireland and Ukraine. I need to find a good source of descriptions for Irish stamps.

You know, the hard part is the descriptions. If I could get people to enter stamp information into my utility and email me the XML file, I can crank out a supplement pretty quickly...

I would be interested in helping you with the US stamp descriptions. 8)

2004 is the first year I managed to put the stamps in release order. I am emulating White Ace album pages to some extent, since they swing descriptions left and right as needed.

It also helps that I have written a number of Scribus scripts that let me flip descriptions right, left and middle with a single click.

I completed my 2007 supplement Sunday night.

There is a PDF available in both US Letter and A4, as well as a Zip file containing an editable Scribus file with images.

Ukraine 2008 is done now. Starting with 2007, I started to make A4 versions of the pages. I plan to go through and make A4 versions of everything when I have the time to make it more accessible for non-US collectors.

I actually like the A4 page size and 4 ring binders better, but using A4 size would be a nightmare in the US. I don't even know where I could buy a ream of A4 paper.

Anyway, the 2008 supplement can be found here:

And here is a screen shot of Page 1 for the nozy:

Mods,

This is completely the wrong forum for this thread. I am not giving away any stamps, or asking for any. Please move this someplace more appropriate.

Everything through 2011 is complete now. I can now take a breather until the last of the 2012 stamps gets released by Ukraine. Then it's time to work backwards from 1991-1992 provisionals, and then all the stamps of previous Ukrainian governments.

All page through 2012 are now up. I can now take a breather and issue quarterly updates.
