Chain#108 has continued its stately progress and arrived in a currently cold and windswept Scotland.

Unfortunately it appears to have been opened in transit and not resealed, indicating that it was not a customs inspection. The glassine envelope too had obviously been sliced open. Having said all that, I don't think anything had been stolen. (I will be pursuing this matter later with Royal Mail, but I am not holding my breath.)

The outer envelope also looks like it may have got caught in a handling machine somewhere in the US, as it has been chewed up a bit and the postmark is at a strange angle.

Anyway, the intention is to get it on its way back over the Atlantic on Saturday.

Chain #121 arrived in Belgium yesterday.

Beautiful Titanic stamps on the cover, sadly NOT cancelled by the canadian post.

100+ stamps, including 17 definitives, 13 still on paper and 3 in a very poor condition.

Nothing in it for me, so I'm passing it on to drvvr in India today.

Hey Danny, thanks for the update... unfortunately, being a rather newish collector, I'm not always sure what may or may not be a definitive in any world country, hence the number of defs in that lot... sorry about that... just feel free to pass 'em back, folks...

Actually, there's a follow-up question... does Scott's indicate which stamps, if any, are definitives for any given country? I looked at the Canada listings and couldn't really tell what were and what weren't (aside from knowing myself...)

That's interesting that the Titanic stamps weren't cancelled! Canada post is getting sloppy. Funny story too: so me and the clerk figure out that it'll need the one Titanic stamp to go overseas... after we're done, she says "oh hang on let me make sure it fits through the "thickness" guide for the envelope.... NOPE... so next thing I know I'm sticking more stamps on it because it's "oversized"... clowns! Next time, I'll use a larger glassine and spread out the stamps better!

Can't speak for Canada Post but I know here in Australia if you want to be sure stamps get cancelled get the clerk in the post office to do it when you are posting it.

Well Danny (and everyone!), I'm certainly willing to learn... so how DO I tell what is or is not any country's definitive? :?:

If you use Michel stamp catalogues, then this would be easy. Just look for the keyword "Freimarke" on the name/description of the set in Michel.

However, Michel is the only worldwide stamp catalogue to provide this classification tidbit for all countries. And I know that most english-speaking collectors (at least outside mainland Europe) don't use it.

For non-Michel users there's a website called definitives.org which tries to list definitives worldwide. It's far from being complete, but it's pretty good reference to get started. Another somewhat similar website is Defworld.eu5.org (as a word of warning, this site has occasional pop-up adverts)

I probably got in too late for the current chain but please add my name to the next one, I participated in a chain a while back and really enjoyed it. Got some nice stamps for my collection and was able to dispose of some of my duplicate stuff. :D With just getting back to work in a new job and finances what they are, I have to keep the collection going with as little cost as possible. I love trading stamps....

I'm willing to start up a new chain letter - just put together a worldwide mix of 100 diff, mostly older (pre 70's or so), no obvious definitives just commem's. I'm just back into collecting seriously again so I hope I've picked material you guys will want. I can also send it out nicely handcanceled from our village post office (I bet no-one has heard of Crystal Beach, Canada?! :)
