QUESTION 1

Philatelically speaking the name of the country is GREAT BRITAIN not UNITED KINGDOM. In later questions you refer to it as Great Britain & GB.

QUESTION 35

I objected at the time, the 1st. Monarch was on the 1960 issue of Queensland Stamp Centenary which depicted Queen Victoria.

David,

Question 1. Technically at the time, the correct name of the country was "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland". (note NOT "Northern Ireland" as partition did not take place for another 80+ years).

Question 35. The answer is indeed Queen Victoria, but NOT for the reason you gave. The stamps of Western Australia & South Australia both include the word "Australia" in their inscription. As the Western issues featured the swan design, the answer to the SPECIFIC question "Who was the first monarch to be featured on a stamp inscribed 'Australia' "would therefore be "Queen Victoria as featured on South Australia..."

Very pedantic, I know, but no more so than several of the preceding replies...

palsy,

I don't understand what you are arguing about.

I have never heard anyone say that the penny black was the first form of pre-paid postage - only that it was the first postage stamp.

Pre-paid postage in Britain predates the penny black by 4 months anyway with the issue of the Parliament prepaid envelopes in January 1840.

gavin-h,

I disagree.

The stamps you mention are not inscribed 'Australia' (Margot's quotes not mine), they are inscribed 'South Australia' and 'Western Australia'.

The actual question was:

Australia became a Commonwealth in 1901. Who was the first monarch to be featured on a stamp inscribed ‘Australia’ ?

The intent of the question is clear from the prefixed sentence!

David,
I understand what you are saying, but the question is the 'first monarch to on appear on an Aust stamp', it is not 'the earliest monarch to appear...'.

I agree.

I was the nominated adjudicator. This red herring objection about 1960 stamps was raised during the Quiz and I over-ruled it immediately.

End of discussion. :D

The first postage stamp ever issued inscribed "AUSTRALIA" and depicting a monarch was the one shown below. It depicts King George V and was issued in 1913. Not Queen Victoria, or HenryVIII, or Richard The Lionheart. No ifs, no buts, no maybes.

Hey if crystal clear questions like this one below are NOT precise enough to some here, members might find no-one will volunteer to take several hours to prepare the next lot.

Just a thought folks.

Answer: KING GEORGE V
Although Australia became a unified, independent country (within the British Empire) in 1901, no stamps were issued until 1913. In the interim, stamps issued by the individual states were used.

These Qs were not trivia, they were serious. How about a name change to Study Stamp Night?

Suggestion: Might be worth a precise definition of "stamp" before the next one. Some people make them from rubber, some people make them with a foot.

Scott,

I quite agree :!:

I was simply making the point that if one is "selective" with one's understanding or use of words, one can argue about anything...

Deep down, I think we all know KGV is the answer that was required.

Glen,

just because you bought them when they were issued doesn't mean you are right but as you are taller than me then I will concede (but I still think I'm right)

Is it time guys to lock this thread?

We all had a great night, Pertinax won it fair and square, Glen & MargoZ did a great job.

Let's call it a night or the thread may be renamed
ad infinitum.

Yes I agree with Lakatoi - This was without doubt the most successful event this forum has ever staged and due credit should be given to MargoZ for the hard work committed to making it the success it was...

These forums are meant to be fun and the huge response to this proves that indeed they are...

I found all the questions to be very well phrased and unambiguous and can offer no excuses for my inability to answer them other than to say I AM DENSE

These Quizzes I think we would all like to see as a permanent fixture on Stampboards and as such all encouragement should be given to the organisers...

So Hats off to MargoZ and Glen and let's wrap this one up...
