Kenneth, This is a great idea, thanks for posting these. Could you add the name of the designer and the quantity printed?

By chance, if you or anyone could post a scan of the souvenir sheet issued with the stamps for the 2 Feb 2010 Oman Third Census issue (Scott 502-503, Michel 658-659), I would be most grateful. Michel 2013 lists the souvenir sheet as Block 47 but neither Michel nor Scott have pictured the souvenir sheet. I should have it of course, but my Oman collection is mainly in Europe and I am in Uganda.

Some time ago, I got my new Michel catalogues covering the Gulf area - the 2nd 2013 edition of "Gulf States" and Michel Uebersee (40th ed) Naher Osten 2013. The two editions were published simultaneously, one in English and one in German. However, I find striking differences between the two. Prices - though both catalogues give prices in euros - are often different, and also information varies sometimes. Any clues?

On the positive side: some prices have been adjusted to a more realistic level, such as the prices for Oman Mi 190-192 (SG 212-214). And they are the same in both editions, alhamdulillah. One wonders, though, why Michel still don't manage colour illustrations for this issue, or just give illustrations for the overprints. Varieties are still graciously overlooked ...

The price for Mi 102 type II cancelled (100.-- Euro, also the same in both eds.; 101a in SG) is ridiculously high - this stamp is very frequently offered and trades between 4 and 10 Euros for a nicely cancelled specimen.

The information given in the two editions both on stamps and in general has not been very carefully screened. For example, the introduction says that "the Sultanate of Muscat was renamed Sultanate of Muscat and Oman on 20 April 1966 and Sultanate of Oman on 16 January 1971". Absolute rubbish: the sultanate's official name was always "Muscat & Oman" since the 19th century (just have a look at any official text such as the sultanate's treaties, government publications, laws, etc), and the name change to Sultanate of Oman was announced on 8 August 1970 (I assume it took effect on that day, though some think the new name was only effective 9 August 1970). That the overprinted definitves were only issued on 16 January 1971 is a completely different chapter.

The maps in the German edition also need revision, just look at the Yemen boundaries or the boundary between Yemen and Oman. And Gwadar / Guadur was not "leased" to Oman, it was part of Muscat's dominions since 1783, unlike Bandar Abbas and other places which were actually leased and not fully owned by Muscat. Gwadar was given up by the Sultanate on 8 September 1958 and Pakistan established control ov er the district and port (not in 1956 as stated in Michel).
