Hi....

I may be a relative newbie here.... But I thought let me ask and get to know how each one felt on their first day out here in stampboards..... AFTER BECOMING AN ACTIVE MEMBER

I know many take days before registering and days before making their first post.... I want to know how it felt to be part of the world`s largest stampboards???

Any unique, interesting or odd thing that happened to you on your first day???
First day jitters??? The warm welcome you got???

Anything from your personal life that particular day that makes you remember that day as fresh and memorable even now???

Let me make it clear... By first day I do not mean the day we register and vanish to come back after long... In that case the first day would be the day when you decided....

Yes folks... I shall be a part of family henceforth

For people who forgot when was the day they joined here.... I think that is one thing that is shown below our profile photo in every post that we make....

Okay... Let me make the start... Though that particular day is not a far memory for me because I joined quite recently. I would not forget that day as that day was my B.I.R.T.H.D.A.Y

... Not to forget the four warnings I got from the moderators within my first 6 posts  ..

Great idea for a thread, drvvr 8)

I was pretty much in from the start - signed up when Glen sent his first email about the new venture. Right away I thought it was an exciting opportunity and would fill a HUGE gap on the Internet.

Didn't realise how big it would become so quickly though!!!

Great idea for a thread drvvr ............

My first day was pretty lonely as I was quite literally, the only one here.

I set up this board in 2005, and made a few test posts to see how it worked. Thought 'I must do something about letting others know about this neat idea' - and promptly forgot about things for the next 2 years. 8)

Gavin above was member 10 to join as can be seen below, and yes I think was our first moderator as we got a huge amount of spammers trying to join back then, and he offered to help delete them and their annoying posts.

4 years and 22,000+ posts later, he is still helping keep the boards neat and tidy. :)

http://www.stampboards.com/memberlist.php

We were all totally new to it, and had no filters in place to stop spammers - and seemingly half the early posts were for Viagra, porno sites, cheap cellphones and cameras and Russian Brides etc.

Then as now, an awful lot of work goes on quietly behind the scenes - to keep the boards neat and tidy by the Volunteer Moderators, to whom we all owe thanks for the never ending job they do. :)

Twas either a Friday afternoon or saturday morning. Either way, I had some spare time on my hands and David Benson had mentioned stampboards on the eBay stamp chat board so I thought I'd give it a try.

I'm still here.

Hi All,

Well I am the most recent till now to post my experience. I joined just 4 days back and my account was activated just 3 days back on a Sunday.

The most unique thing about this forum is that there is such rich culture and diverse people from across the globe.

People follow the rules strictly and also guide you, sometimes warn you, even scold you like my college lecturer and then praise you for an excellent post. :D :D

I love the variety of stamps, FDCs and MS uploaded here and I so wish to have them all...but then...that will take time..when I'll grow a lil old...i am all of 18.

I first Joined stampboards through googling Nauru stamps and there were a few articles here, but I certainly didn't collect Australian stamps. Now however after perusing thread after thread, wiki after wiki, I'm hooked on KGV heads and thoroughly enjoying being part of a fantastic community, cheers everyone :D

I don't remember my first day here (hard time remembering yesterday) but the records show:

My first post was on the day I joined. It was on the Never Ending Story - Add A Line - Use Moderation In Language thread and was quickly followed by a self-introduction which seems to have been put in the wrong place. It also took me about four weeks to learn how to post an image so I can still emphasise with other members in that regard.

I was welcomed by a lady with red stilettos and am still in a daze. Whether it was the welcome or the technology I am still not sure but I will come to grips with it some time soon.

I joined way back in 2007, but really did not do anything until I received a e- mail from Glen, about 12 months later "Begging" :? me to post a few words of wisdom,

So I started that day to do something about it..and posted here and there,Getting Glen upset along the way.

Not being a "Computer " Person,I found it a bit of a struggle, but persisted, and after many foot in mouth situations, here we are today.

Still unable to do many of the "Magical" things I see others do but Happy doing what I do, that is talking to so many wonderful people that inhabit this World Of Stampboards.

Yes I remember a time where we had 98 members who had made 100 posts or more. Which back then was a pretty big milestone.

Ron was on 90 posts or something, and Didge was also in the 90s (now 2500+) so I asked them both if they could make a few posts, so that the next newsletter could say we had 100 members who'd made more than 100 posts. :)

NOW we have 139 members who have made over 1000 posts, indeed Mr Boggler will soon be our 25th member to have made over 10,000 posts -

http://www.stampboards.com/memberlist.php?sk=d&sd=d&start=100

I will stress that these post count numbers per member are sacrosanct.

There is no way for admin to adjust manually any member count. All Admin can do is remove a member and all their posts if desire (we never have done that actually) but other than that - when you see Mr Boggler, or anyone else, at 9,260, there are 9,260 posts he has made, and every one can be seen here -

http://www.stampboards.com/search.php?author_id=175&sr=posts

Even the one with him getting to post number 100 back in 2007 is easily found :) -

The first couple of times I tried to join Stampboards, the attempts would not "take." I was still using dial-up service and had not converted to high-speed.

You have no idea how long it used to take to load a series of messages with stamp graphics, and our members LOVE graphics! :D

Our host has always had a fine global philatelic reputation, so I thought that this new online venture would be interesting and successful.

Since my philatelic interests are worldwide with the added emphasis on Australian stamps, my second largest specialized collection, I knew this electronic forum would be of great interest.

Stampboards more than meets my expectations. :D

Sounds familiar. When I joined, I typed in a very personal story about my Grandmother and how I took over her collection of old records, antique tools and stamps.

All of my work that day was for nothing as the post would not go through. I have not introduced myself - tried and failed so I will remain a man of mystery... 8)

I got this when I joined another web forum a few years before Stampboards, so that experience stood me in good stead.

Seems a familiar story though.

It seemed like quite a while back. I had purchased items from Glen on his website and had corresponded with him before Stampboards was formed.

Then if I think I remember rightly (not very good at remembering things nowadays) it was at the very first few days of Stampboards that I joined and later invited to be a moderator (was thrilled at that as I had never participated in any blog or online forum before, let alone moderate one).

The rest, as they say, is history.

Yes years ago this was a real issue, but it seems now even plug in modems have great speed so we do not regret our strong passion for LOTS of photos.

That has always set this board apart from all others.

And now it is not a tech issue for 99% of members, it has stood us in great stead. 8)

Let me step back just a few days from that 1st day, (I had been sold on joining many days before but the joining part seemed to take an eternity...sorry Glen, I know you and your Mods are busy).

I was specifically trying to figure out if a Vatican City rarity, being offered on eBay by a New York dealer, which happened to have certificates from an "Austrailian Authority" was at all plausible.

Google led me here. For years Google had been leading me here from dozens of different searches.

At the time I happened to be stranded for a week in a hotel room with no stamp projects and little to read or watch on TV.

Now I am, and have been for years, a member of the VSC... but I've never posted over there... not sure why... it's just a good place to find Scott numbers before they get published in Linn's, or to search for them digitally rather than paging through lots of print back issues.

But as I waited for my joining app to go through, (and waited.... and waited...  ). I got absolutely hooked on all the graphics while TRYING to read the ENTIRE board.... fruitless pursuit by the way.

So when I joined, I immediately broke a rule knowingly making sure I could competently post a few images before I introduced myself. Images I happened to have on my lap top because I had used them in articles written for my local stamp club newsletter.

And I've been hooked and posting ever since. I'm always intending to scan more and post more images... for that is what is wonderful about this board... but when I actually am in the presence of my collection... and have the time... I tend to work on the collection and fall behind keeping up with the board.

Ah well... there's always tomorrow.

Hello Jacob here.Image

My dad joined on stampboards in 2007 but he was not really active on the board until I think 2009 . He used to just read the threads and sit on the side line.

I used to help him soak kiloware and then I seen him reading the threads here on his computer.
so i ask him if I could join and he said no because he thought we could only have the one account per house hold.

BUT i kept on going on about it  and he finally ask a question about it on the board and that is how i became a member.
And i have been a busy bee since with all my collection interest. Image

Jacob.

I joined on October 30 2010. And know days keep dad informed on what's going on.

If I recall correctly I joined here by mere coincidence searching net for some information about coins.

I found that board not only has posts related to Numismatics but is specialised for Philately.

I had joined after reading almost 30 pages of the posts "Banging the drum for the Uglies" and it's now routine like reading daily newspaper .

I wouldn't hesitate to say it is sort of addiction now and don't want to miss logging on to Stampboards.

Can't remember the date I joined, can't remember how I found it. (It's a real bugger old age).
But I still enjoy it every time I log in.

What a great thread!

If I remember correctly, it took me about a month to make my first post. It was an introduction, as instructed, and I will admit to having read ALL of the rules before I made that post. Maybe even more than once!

I don't really remember the day, but I clearly remember how nervous I was when I hit the "Submit" button. I felt as if I was starting a new school, where everyone already knew each other, and would be watching my every move.

Those feelings were disspelled almost immediately by the warmth and charm of the various members I came in contact with. Thank you to all!

Everyone here has been helpful, friendly, informative, and unfailingly supportive. I feel it is impossible to give back as much as I get out of this experience, but I will contribute whatever I can, whenever I can, in an effort to do so.

An extra-special thank you to all of the moderators, and Glen, for making my favorite place on the web available on a daily basis. :D

All-in-all, a pleasant memory, so another special thank you to drvvr for asking!

Kristine

Memory would be a fine thing

I do know I'd been lurking around the boards for several months, and picked up a lot of information, and then having to google the answer to the registration question  (no barred numerals back then  ); but - IIRC - the first question I asked was on behalf of a family member.

I definitely remember not knowing how to upload an image - didn't even know what photobucket was  (not to mention how to attach a smiley  ) - and spending heaps of time eavesdropping on topics which discussed computer related stuff.

Since this was the first chatboard I'd ever joined up to, I was nervous; but soon found out the moderators do a brilliant job to keep this board clean.

Been boring the socks off everyone ever since

I haver actually been on and off BB's since around 1999, so Stampboards as a BB was not particularly a new experience,

But I actually had to use the search function to look back at my first few posts, because I do not recall much about it. Just the excitement of finding another stamp board which seemed to have far more content and regular contributions to the several that I had already been a member of.

I do specifically recall Glen asking me to become a Moderator/Admin, and I said yes, subject to me being able to maintain my vitriolic nasty mode when posting as a member, and not as a Mod. He said yes, and I have much pride in being allowed to be part of the management team on this Board for over four years, although when I first visited the Mod Private Forum nuthouse, and read the threads there, my reaction was...hell, get me out of here...

Having had experience as a Mod on other (non stamp) BB's prior to here, I told Glen that the half-life for a Mod was around 12 - 18 months, and that was about how long I would be around (as a Mod). I was wrong. Very, very wrong.

And it's all in fun, really. That's mainly what I am here for, and that's what being a stamp collector is all about.

Oh, I almost forgot. Go Catters. Premiers in Heaven, for 2011

Norm

I can't remember how I found stampboards, but am very glad I did.

It's amazing how much I learn each time I stop by.

MANY thanks to all!

I was one of the early adopters, joining as member 45 on April 4 2007. If I recall correctly, I joined after Glen sent one of his customer emails promoting the Board.

I was confused right from the start. I'm not a computer " person" and so it took a few attempts to settle in and get a direction and I have not looked back.

I really enjoy being able to share my limited knowledge about stamps with others.

Each day brings new chances . I'm still learning and that is what life is about.

I stumbled upon Stampboards by accident, googling for something as I often do.

Now, I'm a computer professional and spend 8-9 hours a day in a front of computer (working as internet ads trafficker) and have been member of countless boards on numerous subjects including philately and numismatics.

I think that I have full right to rate this board as top notch one.

This board is extremely well maintained, very active and has one of the best set of user rules I've ever seen. Most important of all, there is great bunch of admins to enforce these rules.

Overall my experiences with Stampboards are great, it is probably best philately board in the world, way better than any other I have visited.

I've just looked at my member details and found that I joined on 30 March 2008.

I have no recollection of joining, but this isn't surprising as the time given is late evening when I would have consumed my share of a bottle of wine.

I have contributed little to the board, primarily because I don't collect Aussie stamps, only FDC, but I have learned a tremendous amount about stamps and other philatelic subjects.

For me, one of the more positive aspects is the complete absence of popups and adverts. I think being a member is a real joy.

I look forward to more years of pleasure and stimulation.

I think the moderators knew of our memory... That is why this detail is entered right below our profile photo on every post we make...

Pretty similar feeling... Also got punished for breaking school rules   .... But the transition was very quick... From a newbie among strangers to getting the feel of BEING A MEMBER OF THIS FAMILY :)

Norm

Hi Norm...

Glad that you were wrong :) ... I still remember the first day when I was caught by You for posting using text speak and getting a stern warning!!!!

I was upset and also thought What if???? But being a member of 10-15 boards already catering to different categories, I did understand how and why STAMPBOARDS stood out... THE RULES... the rules are set and are to be followed... Though any rule or law is a bitter pill to digest, it helps in smooth functioning, making life easier for everyone...

I still have this doubt... How is the cost for running the site maintained?? Every forum I joined the first mail from the moderators ask me if I could make a Donation to the site so that I get exclusive preveilages.... Not here. That is yet another thing which made me feel special... The first mail from Moderators WELCOMED me and asked me to make an introduction.. So as it is often said... It was love at first sight

Today had yet another surprise awaiting me... Have you people ever felt the joy when a newbie to school is asked by the teacher to come in front of the class and is applauded for something he did?????? I DID

The Moderator email which drops by in my inbox occasionally , today had this thread as the first link asking if members remember their first day!!!!

Thanks folks.. It feels great :o

Well, I think I joined back in the dark ages. In the early days, it was full of enthusiasm and fun. Being online for milestones- 100,000 posts, 200,000, half a million and of course the competitions that went with them, meeting a kid from S.Aust (I think our first child member), the illusory character that had us all in stitches with his antics and where he was. Then Mr. Bozic arrived and things went pear-shaped- many warnings and threats of immediate dismissal. I was getting into trouble in all directions.

I also met because of this Board- MrB, Philly and Old Harry and later Fercon Jerry (although not a member of this board.), Arls, Roly (from NZ), and of course Uncle Andrew (Crosscrescent) and Kenny(Kennywkt) from Malaysia whom I visited and stayed with in Malaysia.

Then there are the members of the GOMC- including Muruk, Macgooley (who definitely isn't boring- either here or in real life.), Browny from WA. and even PeterS ( I don't think Hawthorn are a real chance seeing how well Geelong and the Wobbles are going.). Then there's SGT Traralgon, the red shoes lady MZ, Glen, GJ50 and many others.

Now, I'm just happy to potter along, put in the zany comments on the GOMC thread, keep in touch with the scouts and lighthouses threads put in a few comments on Barred Numerals and try to keep my nose clean and it seems to be working.

I was chuffed I lasted until 15,000 posts and remember well the race I had with Gavin-H to get to, I think 10,000 posts. Both Kenny and Uncle Andrew were already at about 30,000 by that time.

Ah. those were the days. Inventing threads to increase both your own tally and the board count, well SBs doesn't need that now, it is an established board that has added to the WORLD stamp community.

I owe a big thank-you to SB members and organization for increasing my Knowledge and changing my collecting habits........ Thank you.

I was searching for a bit of information on some Sardinian/Italian stamps and Google landed me here. The wealth of information I found on this site just blew my mind. I immediately wanted to join.

I am very new to BBs having only participated in one close to a decade ago. I had lots to learn including posting pictures--and I'm supposed to be a graphics professional. Once on board, I found the various topics so interesting I have had to ration my time or else I would be on daily and for hours.

I thought my knowledge of stamps would be so limited that I could never make a meaningful post. I was wrong. Stampboards is a great tool for collectors.

I do not really remember much more than that I may have been the member living furthest to the north at the time I joined, which was not that long after the site opened if April 1st, 2007can be looked upon as kind of 1st Day of Activity (FDA  ).

Where i found Stampboards? May have been at philatelic.net, but I can't tell for sure.

Unfortunately there has been a lot of things happening making my stamp activity lag behind and my activity here very sporadic. I always hope this will change may be next week, or next month and surely next year.

Best wishes to all members.

I still have some of the old Russian Bride threads hidden away, and you can have them for the right price...

We also went through a furniture spam stage. Would you like a Queen size bed air lifted from Russia?

I joined September 25th 2010, almost 11 months ago at the time of this post. Wow, almost a year. It's fun so it doesn't seem that long. 8)

I found this site through Google. If I recall correctly, I was doing some research on Canada re-entries.

I remember clicking on this link and reading for quite a while. I was impressed with the scans of stamps on some of the threads. I also appreciated the free exchange of knowledge on the threads asking questions.

I signed up immediately and starting posting the next day, so let's refer to the next few days as my "first day".

Scanning topical stuff and posting it here was a new facet of collecting which I found very exciting. I had never shared my collecting before with more than two people at a time, now it's hundreds.

Later came even more facets of the site, such as trades and purchases, etc........

I was a kind of mid-wife at the SB birth and first post was on 1st April 2007.

Ironically it was a blonde joke - (ironic because I was brunette then but blonde now).

Not a particularly auspicious beginning but what can you do? 8)

Here it is again for posterity:

A blonde goes to the post office to buy stamps for her Christmas cards. She says to the clerk, "May I have 50 Christmas stamps?"

The clerk says, "What denomination?"

The blonde says, "God help us, Has it come to this? Give me 6 Catholic, 12 Presbyterian, 10 Lutheran and 22 Baptists."

I certainly remember mine.

I was trying to find information on a piece of an inherited collection and the first few people to respond were Glen (Who very nicely made the encased postage piece asked about my Avatar) and Doug, and Eric.

Since then it's been an absolute pleasure dealing with all the great minds here, and I am still amazed by the knowledge that is shown here on a daily basis.

What a great read!

One of the things I like about Stampboards is logging on and finding a new thread, then realising you've 'lost' an hour reading some great stories/facts/discussions.

I joined in May 2008 after searching for information about plate numbers for the GB Penny Black. I read for a while before taking the plunge and joining.

Like most newbies I felt a little overwhelmed by the knowledge other members have, and thought, "What can I possibly contribute?"

I had never joined a stamp club before - never mind an internet board, so when I got positive feedback on posts of my stamp album pages it was a real boost to my enjoyment of the hobby.

Since May 2008 when I joined here, I have had education, inspiration, laughs, contributions to charity, a bag of Hawaiian coffee from Glen, Secret Santa gifts from around the globe, enjoyable reading, and above all FREELY GIVEN KNOWLEDGE from some of the best philatelic minds on the planet!

I have, I am, and I will enjoy my time here on Stampboards, so thanks for allowing me to tell my story drvvr, thumbs up!

Even today I have that doubt.... There is a section called "You ask the questions... Someone will have answers"

It just takes less than an hour for me to get my first answer over there... Sometimes in minutes...

Roos, KGV, WW issues, pre-decimal, perf..... all these are Greek and latin to me... I still know nothing about them but just to read about them makes me wonder, how true it is what Glen says.... "KNOWLEDGE IS POWER"

Well April 25, 2011 was when I decided to join. So I am quite new to this.

My first impression was how much knowledge, and information there was to found here and I could hopefully increase my knowledge to a hobby I do love. So I decided to join. Have not regretted my decision.

But I do find this intimidating at times because there is so many experts here, I feel like a fish out of water, but I keep reading and hopefully learning from the great site.

Glad to be a member

Hi, drvvr .

First day!, yes , i have written a short comment on that and also one short comment on (after activity started). After submitting it, it seems to have got lost in space.

In short i will say this i can relate with all of above members comments.
Scotsman said, I have, I am, I will.

This Stamp chat board is fantastic.

Sort of five star school for stamp collecting, computer training, and correct English.

Thank you GLEN.

I don't actually remember the day, but I will never forget the date, April Fools Day 2007.

I am not a bulk poster but I find the site absolutely essential for finding out information on all the bits and pieces that I don't know. I have a bit of a problem though, the more I find out the less I seem to know.

I have looked at a couple of other stamp oriented sites but STAMPBOARDS is by far the most useful. Keep up the good work.

Now if there were only 48 hours in a day I might have time to do all that I want to.
