Some London residents are having their post delivered by two different companies as TNT Post, part of the Dutch TNT group, gets a foothold in the domestic mail delivery market, in opposition to Royal Mail.

Over the past fortnight, TNT postmen wearing bright orange high-visibility jackets have been delivering mail to W4, and to a total of 250,000 homes in west London on a trial basis. Royal Mail deliveries are continuing as normal.

It's convenient that they choose their second trial location, after Liverpool, to be one of the most densely population areas in the country. And without the hassle of parcels/oversized items.

This is bad for Royal Mail. The people working for TNT are almost certainly worse off than those at Royal Mail too. Of course, the customers won't even notice. The public seem to hate Royal Mail anyway.

Possibly because of the increasingly poor service.

As a user of Royal Mail's postal service for quite a bit of inward and outward mail I have no reason to complain.

Can you elaborate on this? What was better about your service in the past in comparison to now?

One of the most common complaints is probably "the postman left a card but I was in, he didn't knock" which almost every time is simply rubbish. There's more work involved in leaving a card than there is in attempting a delivery.

Since Mrs T it's not supposed to be a service but a profit making enterprise, so the bottom line is cut costs, mainly labour.

At least when they do leave a card I have a chance of actually getting the item by going to the delivery office -- OK, it's a 20 minute walk, but I can get there. If it's a private firm it's probably gone to some holding depot that I (as a non-driver) can't get to, because it's in the middle of nowhere and/or it doesn't open at weekends.

If I expect something to be sent by courier, I have it directed to my work address so somebody on the front desk can sign for it.
