I was wondering what kind of stamps do you guys collect?

Do you collect FDC?
Do you collect Souvenir Sheets?
Do you collect used stamps?
Do you collect all of them?
Do you collect full sheets?
Do you collect mint individual stamps?
Do you collect maxi cards?

What do you collect? and why do you like them over the others?

And one more question. How do you store what you collect? Stamp albums? Stock Books? envelopes? a combination of several? :)

I just started collecting stamps a few years ago and have grown a liking for souvenir sheets. I like how some of them show complete scene pictures and the stamps itself is just a small part of the details :D

I also like collecting stamp sets (4 stamps in a set) I like to have them individual so they are perfect for storing in stock books.

sageyelm you've got about 10 different threads worth of questions here. You'd have better luck posting a thread about s/s under the "Share with others here your NICE looking stamp and cover images etc." area.

http://www.stampboards.com/viewforum.php?f=17

Scan a few of your favorites and let us know why you like them. and go from there.

Ah heck, I'd give this a response. I collect Bermuda, and Federal duck stamps. Bermuda because in 2009 I sailed there single handed on a 32 foot sailboat. 5 days of hurricane force winds and 7 of seasick. I fell in love with the first solid ground I hit. Thus, Bermuda is my first collection.

Duck stamps....they're just beautiful and the finest memories I have of my stamp collecting mentor were/are in a duck blind and I got his used stamps after every season.

I'm afraid I've fallen into the MNH lust which is costly when you consider how little an old hinge distracts from a stamp. I dont know what it is about us MNH collectors, perhaps its the unattainable attempt at perfection.

Thats why I collect what I collect, of course I have loads of others, Canadians, airmails, leeward islands etc but My two favs are there.

Cheers.

Why do I collect what I collect :?:

I think the list below goes for most collectors of anything really:

1. You are given some stamps or whatever from a loved one or via a Will and get interested in collecting them.
2. You get bored with what you have collected, see something you like that's different (in an auction, at a stamp exhibition, etc.) and start collecting those.
3. If you exhibit stamps, etc. and have reached the level you feel is as far as you can go with it, you look out for another area and pursue collecting that.

As to what I collect that's simple, far too many things but in a nutshell: stamps (mint for some areas, mint/used for others), FDC's, FFC's, postal stationery, postal history, cancellations, etc., etc.

FDC's, Postal Stationary, Commercial mail, large Blocks, Minature Sheets, Cinderellas, duplicates etc. all go into my "things I don't collect" collection.

I only collect certain countries, and then seem to go for almost everything philatelic pertaining to those specific countries.
This includes NZ & PNG because I have lived in both those places,
plus Malta (have Maltese friends) GB, Canada & US (can understand the language).

That way it is easy to ignore auction lots, etc outside the selected scope.

Whenever I somehow obtain stamp items I don't want(incomming mail, gifts etc) I just hold on to it until I can swap or give it away to other collectors.

Do you collect FDC?

Yes, if it suits my theme(s) (Cold War, European Union, ...)
Do you collect Souvenir Sheets?

Yes, if it suits my theme(s) (Cold War, European Union, ...)

Do you collect used stamps?

Yes, if it suits my theme(s) (Cold War, European Union, ...) Normally I try to get them mint (especially if its about what they depict) but if it's more interesting to have them used, I look for a used copy.

Do you collect full sheets?

No.
Do you collect mint individual stamps?

See above
Do you collect maxi cards?

No.

And one more question. How do you store what you collect? Stamp albums? Stock Books? envelopes? a combination of several?

For the time being stock books, a few boxes and envelopes. In the future I'd like to mount some material to exhibit :) But that's not like for the near future. A lack of time :(

I have to have some sort of "field" to collect stamps. For example, I wanted to collect at least 1 stamp from all the corners of the British Empire. I did it... But some of the stamps, if I were to look for the mint ones would set me back a few 1000s pounds. So I got them hinged. Like one of the stamps for the Mafia Island in present day Tanzania. So for me mint or hinged is never the issue. Sometimes hinged could ever be better than a mint stamp. Like India stamps used in Tibet etc. If you can see the place it was used at from the postmark that is.

I collect stamps and banknotes from "dead countries" The country (loosly defined) must have ceased to exist before the end of 1955. This allows for a finite number of items I need to collect (of course I will never have a complete collection, but the hunt is fun anyway).

Why this speciality? I love exploring the history, geography and culture of our world, and enjoy discovering and understanding the ebbs and flows of the various regions.

Right now the closest thing to a specialty area I have is my astronomy collection.
Other wise I am all over the board, including FDC's(only ones that have actually been mailed),and post cards as well as postal history.

Before putting my toe back into collecting I thought long and hard about what to collect, I decided on areas that not many have any interest in. At the time thematics was thought of as not proper collecting so I began an extensive collection of butterflies and insects but that became too extensive so that has now gone except for items I use for talks. The other collection is Haiti no mass of new issues catalogues are very poor in the main but I love the history.
The one I love best is the childrens collection, this is toy town stamps and items specifically for children that were given away in childrens newspapers etc. I also collect war time propaganda.

I am currently just working on my collection of US revenues (Ducks) and my WW used collection. I have been a US collector, a cover collector and a topical collector in the past. I finally got fed up chasing after US new issues and such and got tired of the FDC and pictoral covers so I just am working on the WW stuff right now. I ended up hoarding a bunch of WW stuff on paper that I haven't even gotten to yet so I am gradually just soaking them and them putting them in albums. Got rid of many of the junk FD and pictoral covers I had as my drawers were overflowing with them . Can't bring myself to part with them all right now, same with the postcards, there are some that I collected on trips with the family and they have sentimental value. Only disposed of the stuff that really didn't mean much to me. I have to watch myself as I am prone to hoarding. Haven't bought a new stamp in months and am using up alot of my mint stuff that I no longer need just to mail letters. I find I change areas from time to time as I get bored. This year makes 30 years collecting for me....

Hi,

I collect MNH stamps/MS/SS from countries which I have some link to; either through relations or through visits. I collect Australia as some close cousins migrated there; Canada as my son migrated to it, UK/CI/Germany/Singapore/Malaysia/France/Bahrain as I visited those countries; India as I am a native of it, UAE as I live here now, Sierra Leone and Tonga for their free-forms (or odd-shaped stamps), etc., etc., etc.

My collection is housed in Lighthouse hingeless albums available for most of the countries that I collect, while others are stored in Davo, Schaubek or Palo hingeless albums.

Collecting an entire country in one go is easy. My husband bemoaned the fact he could never complete a whole country because the stamps were to expensive or not available so I hunted around.
How about Lajtabansac, Western Hungary. The state only existed from the 4th October to the 5th November 1921.The territory was in dispute between Austria and Hungary after the break up of the empire. So just one set of stamps.
The Ionian Islands a group of islands off the west coast of Greece. Placed under the protection of Great Britain in 1815 ceded to Greece in 1862. One set of stamps.

Er ... Western Hungary produced 9 sets.

Kionga is an easy country to complete. Only 4 stamps,
total (Scott) catalog value around $100.

Strange, only answered this question today to an eBay dealer who inquired why I collected Australia.

Like others I had a relation who migrated 35 years ago and raised a family in Sydney. Collecting the stamps from letters sent home to Ireland got me started.

I've never been to visit but my stamps keep me informed of what's happening there.

Do you collect FDC?: Not really, I think I might have under a dozen in my collection and thats only because they were gifts from someone or given to me for a special reason.

Do you collect Souvenir Sheets?: Yes, or more specifiacally Miniature Sheets.

Do you collect used stamps?: Yes. Preference is commercially used stamps over any other sort.

Do you collect all of them?: I try my best - I enjoy the challenge of securing commercially used copies of more modern stamps.

Do you collect full sheets?: Yes if there is something that takes my fancy, especially in the way that Glen Stephens sends out his parcels utilising whole cancelled sheets / sheetlets.

Do you collect mint individual stamps?: Yes, but this isn't as higher priority to me as Fine Used, especially modern fine used.

Do you collect maxi cards?" No. I lie, I have one in my whole collection. Was a gift from somewhere. As a rule. NO.

What do you collect? and why do you like them over the others?: I collect the following; Australian Used & Mint with an emphasis on commercially used decimals, simplified pre-decimal, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Island & of course the Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT). I also collect Sudan (commonwealth period). I collect Australia as that is where I am from and I enjoy the challenge of securing the commercially used copies of modern stamps and even more so the chase of securing commercially used copies of AAT, Cocos (Keeling) Island & Christmas Island Stamps! Sudan - well thats a new interest since I bought a nice almost complete collection on SG pages from Glen.

And one more question. How do you store what you collect? Stamp albums? Stock Books? envelopes? a combination of several?: Mixture. Some items are on hinged pages & in glassine envelopes but mainly the unsorted & duplicates remain in stockbooks and the sorted are laid out nicely on Hagners.

Hope that answers the questions and maybe helps you out in trying to sort your own collection!
