Hi all,

Following a suggestion in another thread, I have here uploaded some NZ postmarks from my 1d Universal collection.

I have heaps more to follow over the coming weeks and months.

I hope you all chip in with your NZ postmark questions as well, and upload some fine photos for us all to peruse.

Otherwise, maybe you can chip in with some observations and comments on relative rarity, or other pearls of wisdom!

References to various postmark guidebooks etc etc are welcome.

Here are some to get the thread rolling!

Bests

Hi Andy

Nice selection. Wooders rates them as follows:-

Bennetts...... 2

Hawarden....... 2

Hororata..... 3

Kirwee...... 3

Little Akaloa...... 4

Mount Somers....... 5

Okain's Bay....... 4

Southbrook....... 3

So nothing exceptionally scarce I'm afraid. Most of these offices were open for many years.

You need to be looking at Wooders ratings of 8, 9 or 10 for valuable marks.

Even then the more complete the mark the better.

Hiya,
Thanks for that. Rather more everyday so far! Plenty of scope for improvement! Not sure if the next offering adds much, but nonetheless the concept of travelling post offices intrigues me. What are they? How did they operate? When did they cease to exist? Below is a selection of cancellations from Travelling Post Offices for Christchurch and Dunedin. The stamp on the extreme right is a nice and somewhat hard to find re-entry for the Dot Plate (Plate 1, Row 4, No.10). It features heavy burin work on the left and right ends of the 'One Penny' value tablet, at the top of the left and right rosettes, in the 'E' of New Zealand, and above the 'ZE' of Zealand.

Now Travelling POs is a whole collecting area on its own!

What you have in your last post are examples of the Christchurch-Dunedin "Outwards" Travelling TPO mark. "Outwards" was southbound and "Inwards" northbound. A couple of examples of mine below on postcards.

With regard to the Universal stamp itself and the flaws and retouches that is also a very popular topic and you will find a couple of threads on 'Stampboards' dealing with nothing else.

Hiya,

That is interesting. I will look out some more tomorrow. I am onto sorting royle's from dot's tomorrow.

I have about 3000 to work through. Tell me, is that an album page you posted, or a competition page? I think the other universal pages are dead.

Hiya again,
Actually, mine appear to be TPO marks 'Dunedin-Christchurch', rather than 'Christchurch-Dunedin'. By my reckoning that would make them northbound, not southbound. In otherwords, should they not be 'Inwards', rather than 'Outwards' ? Or am I missing something here?

You are correct. That will teach me to try and respond in a hurry.

Dunedin Christchurch would be "outwards" for northbound and "inwards" for southbound.

The cards I posted were part of one of my pages of TPOs - not written up specifically for competition but good enough for display purposes.

I see you have posted on one of the main 1d Universal threads but not had a response in 6 months which is unusual on this site for popular threads.

Try contacting RolyRJ directly via the members forum - he has been the guru of universals on here.
