Dieter, I can help with a few.

2 1/2d left hand stamp is Farina, Type 1 (by date), rated X in my 1983 publication. The middle stamp can't help right away but the right hand stamp is Auburn which is common (whatever type).

The 2d orange (Feb 20 87) is Hergott Springs, Type 1 (by date), rated XX.

The 2d purple (Apr 24 01) ie Hermansville, rated S whatever type.

P.A. would be Port Adelaide I think. :?:

The others I can't pick so far, I'll chip in if anything else comes to me.

I can't pick the types by eye, you'd need the diameters for me to tell.

Cheers,
Mark.

The penny green (Ja 29 188?) is Lobethal, which is rated S but the early date I have is 1890. Yours is 188? so Greg or one of the others may be able to enlighten.

Mark.

Adding a few details to Mark's excellent answers:

Yes, Farina type 1. The two types were both in use 1900 to 1903, so the date isn't as much help as the book might suggest. And it is a pretty common postmark.

The second one is a lovely strike of the very hard to find Haddon.

Third one is, as Mark says, the common Auburn type 2. But the time code is 2, which is hard to find -- these are usually time code 1.

Next is Hergott Springs, just as Mark described.

Mark is right about the date of your Lobethal cancel being early. Earliest known cancel was in 1885, but your January 29 85 cancel now becomes the earliest recorded date. (I just added it to the database -- congrats!)

After that is Mintaro Central type 1, time code 1. Very common, alas.

The 2d purple is Normansville Type 2. Scarce, but not as good as if it had really been Hermansville.

The next one, PA Railway, is an interesting find. PA stands for Port Augusta. It is a type 26, which wasn't previously recorded used before 1899. (Yours is 1897.) and that postmark is only known with gangs 4 and 6. Yours is gang 3. Tony Presgrave, do you still read this thread?

Neville, anything to add? Do you know of an even earlier Lobethal?

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Greg, I must have been dreaming when I typed in Hermansville.

Incidentally, I do have a family connection to SA. My father was born in Wudinna (in 1929). His parents (and six kids) moved overland in the equivalent of a ute in the early '30's and ended up in Pittsworth (just up the road from Toowoomba). Something about an economic downturn as I recall.

Cheers,
Mark.

Thanks Guys.........you 've got me excited now with these early dates and so forth.............I think I had better post some more examples for your comments.......what book/s are you using for reference?..........can't wait for the new book to surface (surely a mammoth task)

Hi Dieter, I got a hold of a copy of Rodney Overton's "A Catalogue of Squared Circle Postmarks of South Australia" from a recent Craig Chappell auction. It was published 1983 and I don't know if there is a later edition.

Given a brief read of this thread it seems the updating task is mammoth and new information is constantly coming to light.

I don't have much SA material but will certainly accumulate more in the Early Federal era as I expand my collection so any reference work is good to have.

Cheers,
Mark.

Hi Dieter Reddog here. Looks like you've got a few interesting ones there. I'll give you what I can and maybe Greg could enlarge.

Border Town, Type 1 (by date), Rated S

Cavenagh. This is interesting, my publication makes no mention of it (there is a Cavenagh West Rated XXX). The Post Office List site tells us that a P.O. existed there between 1/10/1881 and 31/1/1910 so maybe it's a good get or maybe it didn't have a squared circle obliterator at all (yours appears to be straight CDS), I'm sure Greg or someone else here will know.

Hindmarsh (a couple). If it's Type 1 (1887-1891, diameter 23.5mm) then I have it as Rated S. Type 2 (1892-1899, diameter 25mm) it's also Rated S.

Laura. 1887 Type 1 (by date) Rated S.

Mt Barker. Type 1 Rated C

North Adelaide. Pre 1900 is Rated either X or S.

Semaphore. Type 3 (1892-1894, 23.5mm) Rated S. Type 4 (1894-1905 25mm) Rated C.

Chain of Ponds. 1898-1910 Rated S.

There's a start at least.

Cheers,
Mark.

Hi Dieter, I meant to get to this lot yesterday but ended up watching the cricket.

Anyway from the top I can give the following information.
1. ??nsbury-not sure.
2.Terowa, Au 22 87-Type 1 (X) or Type 2 (S), the date falls right between those quoted.
3.Kadina Railway, Ma 15 89- (1883-1903) Rated XX-nice.
4.Hallett, Ju 20 81,-I don't have a squared circle showing up until 1887.
5.Cli(nton Centre), Ja 2? 87, (1884-1894) Rated X-another goodie.
6.?kabie-not sure.
7.Aberdeen, Ma 15 81, maybe not a squared circle, common anyway I think.
8.Spalding, Ju 24 84, again maybe not a squared circle, I don't show it until 1890. May still be a scarce pmk.
9.O.B.??, Not sure, I have an O.B. Flat (1909).
10.Kingston My 14 81, Again I don't show a Squared circle until 1887.
11.Tothills Belt, Ju 1? ?6, All I have is a Tothills Creek. This may not be a squared circle but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be scarce.

So a couple of nice ones and a few questions for the experts I think.

Cheers,
Mark.

Thank you once again for all your help Mark......it is really appreciated.......having the literature for info certainly enhances the whole picture.......I am gradually aquiring books, and eagerly await the new South Australia one.....some of the old ones are hard to find.....just purchased the Stamps of Victoria by Kellow(fantastic) if you need any info.

I think no 1 is Stansbury
no 6 is Bookabie
no 9 is Robe ? thought it unusual as it is a purple cancel
and the 3rd last one with just the c e showing possibly Bruce

more help from the experts would be great

:D :) yay.....finally a new star :D :)

Hi Dieter, that book by Kellow is excellent, I only just bought a copy myself. Those towns you've deciphered might be pretty good. Here's what I've got.

Stansbury, Rated S.
Bookabie, No 22 91, The date puts it as potentially Type 1 described as "previously reported but not seen". Even Type 2 (1893-1913) is Rated X.
Robe, by the date it'd be Type 1, Rated X.
Bruce, Type 1 is 1885-1905 Rated XX.

So if you're right about the towns there's a couple of beauties there.

Back to the cricket. We didn't lose a wicket in the morning session, hooray.

Cheers,
Mark.

Thank you very much for taking the time to look over the cancels Neville....without reference material I haven't a clue......Greg mentioned earlier that the Lobethal and P.A Railway cancels were possibly ERD's........are you able to confirm whether that is correct or not ?

I will have another dig and see what else I can find .

Thanks again

Hi!

I`ve had a look at my 1d reds and i found these ones with squared circle postmarks! Can anyone help me with identifying and rating? I know that few are only fragments, but perhaps someone has an idea!? I could also show bigger scans of single stamps!

Thanks a lot

Hi DW!

Thanks a lot!

I just saw that Greg already identified the one which is not good readable. It is Coromandel Valley. is it rated on KGV 1d?
Is Langhorns Creek rated on KGV 1 1/2d?

Greetings

would these 2 types of cancels of Port Broughton have been in use at the same time :?: or would there have been a cease date for the framed cancel (Dec 16 92)and a start date for the squared circle (May 22 94) :?:

Hi

Port Broughton
F1 23mm 1878 to 3-3-1893
SC1 25mm 20-5-1893 to 6-2-1905
SC2 28mm 4-9-1905 to 1933???
C4 28mm 1929??? to 1954

SC2 late date is suspect

Hello everyone on South Australian Squared circle post marks.
I am a hoarder and became interested in your discussion on SA stamps.
Would have a couple of hundred SA stamps on off paper square circle as well as round, would hate to do the wrong thing with them.
If anyone is interested in them I will put up a scan of all.
There are a few reds and purples but a lot of orange and green.
Did see about 8 with bigger perfs could be more.
I don't have any interest in post marks.
Willing to trade if interested in any you see. just email me.
Cheers
Frank

Yes Greg, I'm still around although not reading the board as much as I probably should.

The P.A. Railway mark is an early date by the look of it, with the 9 inverted. I am quite prepared to accept that early dates will turn up, but surprisingly very few have done so since the book was written.

Just a small point from later in your post. It is Normanville and I've never heard of Hermansville.

Tony --- yes. brain cramp. I meant Hermansberg. Good to see you here again.

DM: Nuriootpa Type 1, common. Bute, the only type, also common. And presumably Myponga Jetty, though conceivably Myponga South, which closed a few months before that date. Neither one would exactly be common. Neville can tell you more.

Hi!

Could this one possibly be the "Hermannsberg" postmark? I looked it up on premierpostal reference but there was nothing like that! Is this one a bit scarcer? Unfortunately soe stupid idiot cut into the stamp so that it is worthless!

Image

And, although it is no squared circle, I`d like to know if this one on a bluish 1p stamp is scarcer? It is something with "Rivoli Bay ....", I`d say "North", but it`s not easy to see. Looking at the reference it seems as the Rivoli Bay postmarks were only used a short time till they were closed or renamed to Beachport.

I`ve had a look through all the South Australia stamps lying around somewhere and put together the ones with squared circle postmarks. If anyone could help me with identifying or rating, I could send some closer scans, either here in the thread or per email.

Yes, Josto -- Hermannsburg Type 1 and very far from worthless. That's the one that has the R backwards, and the postmaster tried to use the hammer in such a way that you couldn't see the embarrassing mistake. He succeeded with that strike.

The Rivoli Bay could be North or South, but I agree that looks like North. That's a really scarce one, in use for only one year. (South is also rare, in use for about 4 years.)

I'll look through the other scans when I have time. I'm just back from vacation and catching up on things.

Josto, what's the date on the Gawler Railway (row 2, stamp 1)? That looks like a new earliest known date for code 3. (Don't get excited -- I'm the only person on the planet who cares.)

I'm not spotting anything especially interesting among the rest of them, though a lot of them are hard to make out at that resolution.

Hi Greg!

As I`m not sure, here is a close scan!

Image

The only one I remember to be quite scarce, I think I had shown this one before, is this Betaloo one, which uinfortunately has faded colour!

By the way, I`ve just sent you the pictures per email!

Greetings
