Brummie - Thanks. The cover honors Louisa Dubois Chartrand who died in 1864 at Ariadne Plantation in Cuba. This cover originated from the plantation, which is today just ruins. I have a photo of the ruins.

I already posted this in the OHMS/Official cover thread, but it equally belongs here. Since I have collections for both subjects, its another case of "decisions, decisions, where to put it, oh if only it were possible to have 2 of them...".

Prime Minister, Patiala Government, 1938, On His Highness' Service Only. With embossed government crest on back flap. From the OHMS thread, tonymacg commented the stamps have a nice strike of the Patiala hooded cancellation to boot.

Hi Muruk,

Is that German mourning cover still available by any chance? If it is I would very much appreciate it.

I have been going to start a "Mourning cover" collection - (I am getting morbid in my old age.) -

This should make me get off my backside and make a start.

I wasn't aware that they even still made those envelopes with the black internal lining. I honestly thought they were a thing of the past.

Thank you, Ken

You only came around to the dark side in old age? My, my, I've been making people think I'm creepy since I was a teenager. But remember, you're only as old as you feel. :)

I remember putting my philatelic knowledge to use for a school project; I decorated the cover of a report with various WW2 era German semi-postals showing you-know-who, and drew a black border around the edges. It caught everyone's interest, I don't know if I created any collectors out of it, but it was an attention-grabber.

Some recent humblistic (right, humble doesn't work in that form) acquisitions. These came from a mini-hoard (9 pieces in total) of "Netherlands mourning covers".

A small-size one

Larger size, interestingly with typed commercial addressee:

And one with the original contents:

And another couple Dutch ones. These are interesting, the borders are grey. Another in the batch I didn't scan has a shiny silver border. Seems more like a wedding invitation envelope. :?:

Hello all,

For some reason I've stopped receiving notifications of this threads postings. It was great to catch up on all the postings I'd missed. Great stuff!!
Recently I purchased this cover and would like to know the meaning of the circled numbers in the border 21-4-63. Is it a date? Also, at the very bottom of the neck are the embossed characters reading 108WW. What is that? Can anyone help with this?

Hi Ginny,

Yes, the numbers in the three circles are the date of printing.

I read this one as 22 4 62 (22nd April 1862) but it's not easy to make out.

The small code on the neck includes "WW" in reference to William Wyon who designed the medal that Victoria's head was copied from.

It might not be, but making a guess here, could that embossed 'emblem' (there's a better, proper word to describe it, can't think of it now) be for a church? The W.C. matches the address, so it could be a 'local' letter; the P. could be for "parish"; the cross in the centre (albeit a square cross, but maybe that's done just to fit it in better?); and the 'ribbon' looks like a priest's stole.

A really nice example of the double 15 cent rate to France (weight between 1/4 and 1/2 ounce) paid by two singles of the 1869 pictorial issue.
Image
While 30 cent covers to France are not hard to find, this is the only recorded mourning cover with two of Scott 118. Transported on the steamship Union of the North German Lloyd lines.

Some MC's that I had in my eBay watch list, going back near a couple months now. Maybe readers here got some of them. Titles copied from the original listings.

German Reich 1945 Storm Trooper MOURNING cover

Listed this up for sale here today -

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=36212

Scarce on ANY cover. On a MOURNING cover possibly unique?

Some covers exist with a real stamp on plain covers with a fake cancel, so one like this that is clearly genuine use is a big plus.

Hitler's days were nearly done as this stamp was issued.

This was the second last German Reich set. The one after this on cover is worth $100,000 and is near unknown - even Michel Specialised do not price that one.

Bold Munich Feb 23, 45 cds.

The SA/SS stamps were issued on April 21, the first day of
the Soviet bombardment and invasion of Berlin. They were
not intended to be sold anywhere else but Berlin.

Current research indicates that 100% of the known covers
are postwar forgeries, mostly produced for the American
market. Even covers with Schlegel certificates are fake.

However, there are still some diehards who hold out hope
that someday a genuine cover will be found.

Ahoj everyone!

Does a mourning cover have to have the black border on the outside of the envelope?

Here is a cover from Bor to RakovnĂk in the Czech Republic, when they were named Haid and Rakonitz during the German occupation of the Sudetenland.

Image

It is the announcement of the funeral arrangements for an 82-year-old lady, but is posted the day after the funeral.

Image

So, does it count as a mourning cover?

Cheers,

Honza

Some countries didn't use the black border honza and I think Czech Republic is one of them.

The announcement has the black border denoting death. Shame the letter was sent 1 day late though :(

German covers

The one postmarked Munich is a post war forgery. Note the year date in the cancel is 41, not 45. Any value is as a curiosity only. It might be tempting to add to my small collection of fake MC's, but not at the price asked.

The Sudetenland funeral notice qualifies as a mourning cover, or more precisely, a printed mourning folded letter sheet.

To Brummie -

A very reasonable question. Ernie Mosher defines a ladies cover as a small oblong envelope measuring about 4 1/2 by 2 3/4 inches. The key words are "small oblong"

This Confederate cover measures 3 5/8 by 2 inches, well below the minimum size. Its the smallest Confederate cover in my collection.

"Ladies cover" is a standard term in auction catalogue descriptions for postal history. Small-sized stationery envelopes are often described thus--its assumed that ladies were the ones sitting at home penning correspondence on nice paper.

Sometimes ladies covers have embossing or embroidery designs to them, and look obviously feminine.

A cover from and to Hoogkarspel (The Netherlands). The stamp is one of the landscape series issued in 1962-1963. I think the regional rate was 4 cent in 1963, but I'm not sure.

Image

It was sent on the 26th of May 1963, after my great-grandfather had passed. The handwriting is of my grandfather.

Here is the back of the envelope

Image

Because of the content the envelope survived, so here it is as well. You can see some of my family members are living in Australia (two great-uncles emigrated to Australia in the fifties) and one great-uncle emigrated to Chili (he is a missionary of the Holy Family and emigrated afterwards to the United States (West-Point, Virginia).

Supposedly for a year, but my opinion is that the various government agencies stopped when their individual supplies of black bordered envelopes because exhausted.

Here is little contribution, one mourning cover from Austria under Germany, 1943, with its content! Picked up recently with some other nice covers and postal items.

Tx Brummie, it has nice texture as you said, people used to chose paper and covers carefully, today you go to bookstore and buy a pack of Made in PRC covers and print your letter at 80 gms standard laser/copier paper, o tempora o mores

I was wondering what the value of this cover might be with the nice Chiswick squared circle postmark. I realize that it is not the best possible impression.

Thank you for any info.

Minimal value I'd guess.

I thought knowledge was power. I am hoping someone could talk a little about the cancel.

I did get it out of the dollar box, so I wasn't expecting to hit the jackpot.

This poor little 1854 cover seems to have had a lot of trouble finding its way.

Originally addressed to and mailed from Wigton (879), it seems to have been re-routed to Corby Castle.

Perhaps Charles Aglionby was related to Henry Aglionby, a member of The House of Commons who died in 1854?

It appears from the multiple backstamps that it might have finally arrived on Christmas. They're hard to read, especially the bluish one on the left. Is that some type of postage due marking?
