Here is Margo braving the longest Suspension Bridge in the Southern Hemisphere yesterday ..... a tad annoyed I was rocking it wildly - just out of the old gold mining town of Reefton. With a wild rapids river below.

Luding Bridge spans the Dadu River in Luding County, GarzĂȘ Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, China, located about 80 kilometers west of the city of Ya'an. The chain suspension bridge was built in 1701 during the Qing Dynasty and is considered a historical landmark. In 1935, during the Long March, soldiers of the Fourth Regiment of the Chinese Workers and Peasants' Army secured the bridge as a river crossing vital to the Red Army. Here is an image of an engraved stamp depicting the Red Army soldiers storming Luding Bridge, issued by China (People's Republic) on December 30, 1955 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of this event, Scott No. 271.

The AlcĂĄntara Bridge (also known as Puente Trajan at AlcĂĄntara) is a Roman stone arch bridge built over the Tagus River at AlcĂĄntara, Spain between 104 and 106 CE by an order of the Roman Emperor Trajan in 98. It bears the Latin inscription Pontem perpetui mansurum in saecula (I have built a bridge which will last forever) on the archway over the central pier. Designed by Roman architect Caius Julius Lacer, the bridge is 636 ft (194 m) long and it consists of six arches resting on pillars. Here is an image of an engraved stamp depicting the AlcĂĄntara Bridge issued by Spain on June 25, 1974, Scott No. 1812, plus a photo of the bridge.

I know this bridge. Easter 1973. I refused the 100 CFA to cross. Spent Easter with the chief...goat and cheap red wine. Crossed free the next day. Pont de lianes. Close to sacred fish and monkeys. Those were the days...the deep twilight of people and herds in this area. Flee, my friend, into your solitude and to where the raw rough breeze blows...

If you yearn for completeness, this one will give you a headache. There are 11 variants of it, with and without the SERVICE (Official use) overprint, surcharged on the SERVICE stamp, and all in different perforations :D

There is also an AlcĂĄntara Bridge in Toledo. Also build by the Romans over the Tagus River.
A set of stamps was issued in 1931 with two of them showing this bridge.

The Pont Neuf is, despite its name, the oldest standing bridge across the river Seine in Paris, France. It is a stone arch bridge, completed in 1607. The bastions give the Pont Neuf a fortified appearance. Here is an image of a stamp depicting the Pont Neuf and the Île de la CitĂ©, designed and engraved by Albert Decaris, and issued by France on May 27, 1978 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of the bridge, Scott No. 1599, Y&T No. 1997, plus a contemporary photo of the bridge from a similar angle. Note: This stamp was awarded the 1978 Grand Prix de l'Art PhilatĂ©lique.

I added this stamp to my collection because the shape of the bridge knocked me out. You wouldn't want to go over it at speed.

Below a newly issued stamp of Germany:

This bridge connects the island of Fehmarn with the continent.
Not an attractive stamp, I think. But Germany seems to have lost part of its good taste.

I've posted this once on another thread but you can't get enough of a good thing :D

Japan SG1333 from 1973 commemorating the opening of Kan-Mon Suspension Bridge. It is the 34th largest suspension bridge in the world with a central span of 712 metres.
