Hi Glen,

many thanks for the kind words about the catalog.
It is continually being revised with input from users worldwide who have information as to volcanoes or images that aren't shown in Scott.
Plus the images are updated as I acquire the stamps.
I hope to be able to get to Australia in the next few years and Alice Springs is on my list of places to go.

My latest acquisition.

It falls within the realm of "was it really issued?".

I bought it because it evokes fond memories of my times in Oregon.

Iomoon, yes, isn't it amazing how such distant countries come up with these postal issues.
How did you find it?

I found it on eBay.

My basic search is volc* worldwide.

But seeing as the vast majority of the world's population don't know a volcano that didn't erupt yesterday, I also search on "mountain -rocky -estonia -bulgaria". That's where I picked it up.

Volc* also picks up the Volcani Institute in Israel, but I can live with one or two posts a search.

The following label was issued by Pitcairn Island in 2010 as part of a strip of four stamps illustrating the submarine survey of the islands.

Image

The next shows a view of a lava tube

the last shows submersible approaching Adams volcano.

As far as I know, nothing dramatic happened.
The eruption from 1913 to 1944 was pretty tame.

Maybe it has something to do with flu epidemic?

Nice one Zenon! :D

The label commemorates the raid on Naples on that date by the German Zeppelin L59.

What a fascinating story Nigel.

I was unaware that Germany and Italy were even combatants at that time.

I see 16 civilians were killed and 40 injured.

I noticed the Zeppelin on the stamp but I thought that WW1 was over by that time.
Thanks for the info.

Volcano House post office was established in 1898 and handled mail for the tourist hotel on the Island of Hawaii in the Hawaiian National Park situated on the rim of Kilauea volcano.

I always like volcano stamps and it is not often that you find them in pairs.

Though recently a lot of countries have been issuing Japan Co-operation stamps.

I was going to put this in the thread "Ducks, ducks, ducks."

But I thought it better to put into the volcano thread.

So, for Barry, here is duck on volcano stamp (Taranaki, Mt. Egmont).

Was this a regularly issued stamp or a local or cinderella?

It is not listed in Scott.

Here are my two from the Nicaragua set shown earlier. I got the first one in 1958 as a free gift for buying the whole book of approvals. I didn't want them all but I really wanted that stamp. It was said to be worth sixpence which was the same amount as my weekly pocket money at the time.

I heard the story that this stamp changed history. Someone, possibly a competitor nation, posted letters bearing this stamp to all the members of the committee planning the Nicaragua Canal project. This was to link the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and would bring wealth and jobs to Nicaragua. The committee saw the hidden message and did more research and found that there were activ volcanoes in Nicaragua and the whole project was moved to Panama.

John,

the story and country issuing the stamp is correct, however, the stamp you illustrate is not the one that influenced the decision. The influential stamp was issued in 1900 and is one with the following illustration:

Image

The volcano illustrated is Momotombo which erupted in 1902 and again in 1905 but never since. Work on the Panama canal was begun in 1904.

Well I'll be! Seriously though, I only read it somewhere as a story so having the real story is great. Unfortunately, I don't have the stamp you illustrate. It is a beauty. My wants list just grew. This is the great thing about a group like this. There is always something to learn and someone to teach you. Thankyou.

Hello iomoon,

Thanks for posting this stamp. I climbed on Mt Damavand some years ago as part of a memorable holiday in Iran.

Iomoon,
I'm getting to rather like your volcano stamps. I lived by Tavurvur for 15 month in the mid 90's, but never though I would want to see another volcano.

Another one of my favorite stamps.

The Italian revolution in Naples in 1848 while Vesuvius is erupting in the distant background.

Again, not a new issue, but I only recently discovered it in souvenir sheet form.

These are big so I'll post them separately.

Hi iomoon

Not a stamp but when the Melbourne Museum put on the Pompei exhibit I bought a snow-ball...but instead of a snow scene it showed the explosion of Mt Vesuvius. Just had to get it.

Here's four stamps and souvenir sheet released by Tristan da Cunha on 10 October 2011. The stamps mark the 50th anniversary of the eruption and evacuation. Nice connection between the volcano's eruption and associated postal history on the souvenir sheet.

In 1983 Niuafoou Island issued its first set of definitive stamps - each stamp showed a view from the air of the island - looking down into the volcano crater.

At the left in the picture below is a black and white bromide proof of the stamps, and at the left is one of the issued stamps overprinted specimen

Image

And below is a scarce block of 4 with error missing value for each stamp

In 1993 the school children of Niuafoou were asked to design a stamp showing life on Niuafoou - most of the children submitted sketches of the volcano.

The two winning entries became stamps

Shown below is an imperf plate proof pair of the two stamps and the pair overprinted specimen

The volcano on Niuafoou erupted in 1946 and the 50th Anniversary was commemorated in 1996 with the issue of a colourful S/S showing the eruption.

Below is a large chromalin proof of the S/S

After the 1946 eruption (and final evacuation in 1947), the island was uninhabited until around 1958 when the islanders started trickling back home.

By then there was a lake in the crater, and plant and animal life were once again abundant.

In 1993 George Bennett was asked by Walsall Security Printers to design a set of stamps showing the wildlife which had come back to live around the crater lake.

Below is his rather scrappy preliminary artwork.

And how the strip turned out - below is an imperf plate proof strip for the set issued in 1993 showing wildlife of the crater lake

Latest addition.

Volcanoes no longer active and mostly now atolls, the Cook Islands.
