Nice album - and glad you found some good advice/information here on Stampboards.

Maybe you could show us some larger scans of your favourites and tell us a little about the actors.

Many of us in "the West" have little idea about Indian movies. For instance, I know that Bollywood make more movies than Hollywood, but I know very few of the Bollywood movie idols

Yes, I have both the stamps and they are on other pages of my album. Both were legendary movie stars!! I had a huge poster of madhubala in my room during my college days!!

The first stamp on the page-
Image

legendary actor of my state of Karnataka. He has acted from the Black and white movies era in more than 200 movies of the Kannada language. Was also a great singer and his fan following was legendary with people queuing up a day before to buy tickets to watch his movies!!
He was the actor kidnapped by the notorious sandalwood smuggler and held hostage for ransom before his release. That created quite an uproar here.
That was life imitating art!! :D
He passed away in 2009.
More actors and their stories in the days to come.

Thanks for the scan. Hope to find something to exchange. Though Saif is not collector material, it is the stamp that matters!! was it a MS or a single stamp? That must have been the Commonwealth games before the messy one in India. I have a MS of the CW games in Delhi if you want for a swap.
Comming back to the actors stamps - The other south Indian stars are-
MGR or M G Ramachandran and NTR or N T Rama Rao. Both Actors/Politicians from Tamil Nadu and Andra Pradesh respectively. Hugely popular as actors and politicians they were chief ministers for quite a few years.
There are not many stamps on "Bollywood" actors. There is Rajkapoor, His father Prithviraj Kapoor and Uttam Kumar.
This is MGR-
Image
and this is NTR-
Image
another popular south Indian actor, Shivaji Ganeshan-
Image
Now the bollywood guys- Rajkapoor, Pritviraj Kapoor and Uttam Kumar-
Image
Image
Image
Some more singers in the next post.
Well Gavin H these are some of the Indian actors on stamps.
Most are south indians and have political links. India releases a lot of stamps on politicians and I have to dig around to know who the person is on whom the stamps are released!!

A MS on legendary playback singers-
Image

Kishore Kumar was a versatile singer and amazing actor. A true genius and his songs are still popular today. The rest of the singers are Mukesh, Mohamad Rafi and Hemant Kumar. Immensely popular and great persons, all of them. I grew up listing to their songs on the radio.

Another MS on legendary actresses-

There are more and will post later

Yes indeed.
Beautiful stamps. Do you have all these stamps?

So next in the series of stamps are the directors-
And it has to be Satyajit Ray. A master story teller and a great director, he was also a great artist. As Kenneth Sequera has show there are stamps from other contries as well on him. He also won an oscar. This is the setanant released by India-
Image
and a definitive
Image

Then there is the grand old man of Indian Cinema Dada Saheb Phalke on whose name there is a life time achievement award-
Image

The other great directors- Bimal Roy, Mehboob Khan and Ritwick Ghatak. Mehboob Khan directed Mother India, I think India;s first entry to the oscars. Nargis Dutt features in the background of the stamp in a scene from that movie. Ritwick Ghatak was a great film director of the Art cinema.
Mehboob Khan-
Image
Bimal Roy-
Image
Ritwik Ghatak
Image
And who can forget GuruDutt. A great actor and director, who made great movies. Died at young age of 36 Yrs due to a drug overdose due to alleged personal problems-
Image

Next we have S D Burman. Great music director and who was a prince from the royal family of Tripura. Great songs and great music-

No
That is a really nice post mark. Should have been used on his stamp instead of Rabindranath Tagore.
Any way he was a great singer and there will not be another like him!!
Thanks for the stamp!!

To continue with the stamps on entertainers, here are the singers-

Begum Aktar- the stamp printed with water soluble ink and therefore withdrawn and a bit rare-
Image

Dinanath Mangeskar- Father of Lata Mangeskar and a big music composer in Marathi film industry
Image
Ghantasala- Great singer in south Indian films and also a great music composer
Image
and who can forget the great Kundan Lal Saigal, None of the present age youngsters know of him but a legendary voice-
Image
They were great entertainers and truly worthy of being commemorated on a stamp! and I have all the above stamps!
more in the next post!!

Hello,
I'm trying to complete my collection of Indian stamps (here: http://www.letstalkaboutbollywood.com/article-indian-cinema-on-stamps-111523640.html) and was wondering if anybody had knowledge of some which I would have omitted...
Thanks for any suggestion!

Hi Yves

Visited your webpage and you seem to have all the Indian stamps on actors already!! as you mention, the Ginieu Bissau stamps don't look real.

You have some stamps which I don't have

the cover on the Travancore sisters is great :) :)

As per this sites rules you need 20 posts and 20 days before you can start swamping stamps.

So look around and post on topics related to your interests and we will be in touch with each other as we have a common thematic taste!! You can also email me.

I also collect actors of other countries and any stamps related to entertainment- stage, music, pop stars, theater etc.

Do you collect only Indian actors or other countries too ?

Hello Girish,
Thanks for the message; did you notice other stamps on my page that seemed not genuine? I myself am not a specialist as to why there would be some "real" or "non real" ones.
Please notice that of course I don't have the stamps themselves; I'm just intrigued about the sociological fact that some Indian cinema people have been chosen to appear on stamp while others haven't. First, as you must have read, the Indian Postage only prints stamps for deceased people. Any stamps with living persons come from other countries. But it also has choices, which for me aren't quite clear, apart from the vague idea that it has chosen the "greatest" people... But why no stamp of such worthies as Johnny Walker or Prem Nath, KN Singh, Lalita Pawar or Nadira? Who decides what is celebrity?
A penny for your thoughts.

Hi Yves

Well, to begin with who decides stamps in India? It is complicated, and I presume bureaucratic.

But generally the rules are that stamps are released on the 10 death anniversary of the person and there should be a proponent, ie somebody or institution that proposes a person.

There have been exceptions where living persons have been honored -
Mother Theresa was honored with a stamp when she got the Nobel peace prize

Sir M Vishweshariah, who was Knighted by the British, a great Engineer and Administrator from my state of Karnataka was honored with a stamp when he turned 100 yrs old

Also Karve, an educationist was honored when he turned 100 yrs old

Other than above, in India the person has to have passed away for a stamp on him.

But most of the stamps are on politicians these days.

As regards actors, Indian Cinema has a lot of regional cinema as well and a lot of South Indian stars have been honored with stamps as you can see in my posts above. It helped that most of them were politically active during their heydays!!

As regards Bollywood or the Hindi cinema, there have been a number of great stars but not all of them had mass appeal and duration in the limelight.

Most of the great stars like Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna etc have passed away recently and I am sure stamps will be released on them sooner than later :)

As regards others that you have mentioned, well I think there have been no proponents or they were not famous enough in the eyes of the bureaucrats in the Ministry of Communications, Govt of India.

I hope I have given a pennys worth of thoughts

And I collect stamps on actors from all countries :) :) As of now I have from USA, England, Australia and on the look out from Greece and Spain. There is a thread started by me viewtopic.php?f=12&t=42400 regarding hollywood stars.

It is a nice theme and a nice way to spend a sunday   ( if the wife permits   )

Someone in India Post must have read this. On 100 years of Indian Cinema, 50 stamps were released today

New Delhi, May 3 : At 60th National Film Awards ceremony here Friday, President Pranab Mukherjee Friday released postal stamps commemorating 50 iconic film personalities who brought changes in the Indian cinema.Minister of Communication and Information Technology Kapil Sibal said that as the country celebrates the 100 years of Indian cinema, it is vital to honour the past.”Commemorating 50 iconic personalities of Indian cinema simultaneously, I am happy to say that these 50 stamps are the first ever issued by the department of post. It’s an honour to be part of the centenary celebration of Indian stamps "said Sibal.

Superb!!

Later I got to see all the MS on the site- stamps of India. But they have embedded their website across the image :| :|

The stamp on Rajesh Khanna is nice. I wonder why India Post release the images but defer release of the stamps themselves!!

Any way, looking forward to the stamps!!
