Don't forget Mr Sturt.

I love his 'desert pea' - but they won't grow at my place (I have tried). They are such a cool looking plant. I saw some randomly growing like weeds at a service station in Alice Springs - aargh.

I have to do some work now, but I'll be back.

Someone needs to upload the 1888 James Cook from NSW - are there any earlier explorer stamps than this?

If no-one does it in the next few hours, I'll do it when I get back.

Since I don't have a spare few thousand dollars to buy one and scan it, I will say Canada SG 14 - 10d Blue Jacques Carter issued in 1851, who popped over to Canada and claimed it for France in 1541 (?) incidentally inventing French Canadians, much to the chagrin of the British.

I will say that this is the earliest until somebody comes along and proves me wrong.

Vasco Núñez de Balboa (c. 1475-1519) was a Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador. He is best known for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition to have seen or reached the Pacific from the New World. Here is an image of a definitive stamp featuring a portrait of Balboa, engraved and printed by the Hamilton Bank Note Company, New York, and issued by Panama in November, 1906, Scott No. 186, SG No. 291.

Heinrich Barth (1821-1865) was a German explorer and scholar, and one of the greatest of the European explorers of Africa. Barth's careful preparation, his ability to speak and write Arabic, his facility in learning various African languages, and his conscientious character meant that he carefully documented the details of the cultures he visited. Barth was among the first to comprehend the uses of oral history of peoples, and he collected many of them. Here is an image of an airmail stamp featuring a portrait of Heinrich Barth, a map, and a boating scene from Lake Chad, designed by Pierre Béquet, engraved by Pierre Forget, and issued by Chad on February 17, 1969, Scott No. C50. Note: An outstanding biography of Barth has been recently published by W. W. Norton & Company, entitled A Labyrinth of Kingdoms: 10,000 Miles through Islamic Africa, by Steve Kemper.
