Well, I was told that 'even covers from that other small Pacific island' were hard to come by in Australia, probably because of the relatively small population - although there are plenty of tourists, and lots of new private postal operators producing their own stamps.

So here are a few pre-decimal covers from New Zealand.

Firstly an aerogramme with 3 x Scout Jubilee stamps on, posted with the Jamboree postmark. The contents are most interesting, but I'll put them in a different thread (here). Interestingly there is NO mention of the Jamboree or the stamps!

Image

Second, the 1/6d 1953 definitive, solo use from Murchison 4 November 1955 to UK

Image

And lastly from the final pre-decimal definitives, the 2/- Rock Drawing from Hastings 4 November 1966, solo use to UK.

Image

Both the last two have NAC airmail labels.

Rob, everything is for sale (almost). I've spent 40 years (no, make that nearer 50!) buying stuff and putting it in stockbooks and boxes, and I keep telling myself that I ought to get rid of some of it. Nothing I put on these messages is part of my core collection so, yes, it's all for sale, and my prices are not likely to be out of reach. If I ask too much, I expect to be told! Email me and we'll talk. And let me know just what you're interested in overall - that goes for anybody!

Here are a couple of my NZ covers:

KEVII 1915 cover with ½d. green pair (and the recipient lives in a lighthouse :!: )

Image

KGVI 1938 FDC with both the ½d. green and ½d. green with Official o/print (reasonably rare on cover)

Looking through my boxes of assorted worldwide accumulation I had I was surprised at how much had accumulated from New Zealand. (There's even more from Australia.)

Starting in 1947, here's one from Lambton Quay, 2 x 9d KG6 for the 1/6d air rate to England (part of Wellington, for those that don't know).

Image

In 1948, a 2d postal stationery envelope to the USA, apparently sealed, so not printed papers, but surface rate. Postmarked Onehunga (which is part of Auckland) 22 MY 48 with a backstamp of Jacksonville JUL 7 1948, so surface rate!

Image

And one in 1953 with 3d & 1/3d paying the 1/6d rate airmail to London. It's an Air Force postmark, but the top is barely legible. Those who know these things could work it out. Sadly my MorleyBright watermark detector has been out of use for so long I can't tell which way the watermark is on these.

I didn't realise that it was possible to buy the 1954 Official stamps for collector-serviced FDCs, which is what I assume this is. The return address is F.C.Winder, S.H.E.D., Kote Maori, H.B., N.Z.
Image

Although this is marked First Day of Issue the 1960 Health Stamps are paying what I think is the right rate of 8d to England. (This is one aerogramme I'm not going to transcribe in another thread - I can't read it!)
Image

This is also the 8d airmail rate to England in 1963 - from the end of the world, Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island.

1913 Oamaru to Empire (principal city in) Canal Zone. Nice cover, and I thought probably scarce until I googled the addressee and found that:

"Frank E. Greene was one of the first members of the Canal Zone Study Group" (some of his philatelic estate was offered through the SG in 1968). Another online reference mentions:
"An article in The Stamp Trade (1917) titled "Panama and Canal Zone Notes" by Frank E. Greene begins: "Everyone of the new Zone stamps contains an error.... "
He is writing about the official photographs which were submitted to Panama who in turn sent them to the American Bank Note Company
".

1939 (18 December) Postcard from East Tamaki to England - no indication of the war, just glad to be back as it was a very rough trip! The picture postcard is from Capilano Canyon, Vancouver, Canada!

Nice card - the writer was something of an adventurer/man of mystery. He talks about about flying in a single engine Cessna and landing on a glacier on Cook or Tasman. Then he remarks that he's flying to Australia the next day, before going further to Indonesia and Borneo, so long as Sukarno's dodgy politics allow!

No fractional tax mark - so what does that represent? The amount paid was 3/-, surely the due isn't 240 pence?

Three pretty standard items I picked up the other day.

The first is philatelic I think, there were a whole heap with the same pre-printed name and address. The others look to be genuine commercially used.

Robin Startup is still a notable name in NZ Philately. He signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists two years ago.

Yes, that certainly seems the case. Shortly after I posted those images I did a web search for books on NZ postal rates, and it seemed that about half listed R. M. Startup as an author or editor.

Image

That isn't a rate I've seen before. It's a nice example of a postally used arms type fiscal, there can't be many around on cover.

Nice usage of the 8d.

At that date the rate for a 1st class inland letter was 4d and 1/- paid registration upto £10. Giving a total of 1s 4d.

Hi
Picked up this cover from Te Aro to London. First Air Mail NZ-Australia-England.

Could anyone with the new postage rate catalogue let me know what was the rate from NZ to UK in 1935. The cover below has 2/- and 1d airmail placed with an underpaid of 2/- and 1d doubled to 4/2.

How could the sender get it so wrong? Have to say I wouldn't be a happy recipient :x

Mick
