Thought I would like to share this not so perfect cover. Unfortunately it has a tear on the left bottom side, but I like it for layout of the cover overall and its dedication to Kingsford Smith.

:) :) Enjoy Brickie143.

Nice cover 8)

While the tear is a real shame, it doesn't detract from the look of it for me.

What an interesting co-incidence.

In 30 years of dealing I have never had this cover before .. but I just bought the same design .. but better still, mine is a FIRST DAY COVER, being cancelled 2 days earlier than yours!

It will be many times scarcer than Eustis 180/181a/181 - itself a fairly scarce cover.

My Hunch seeing both are PERTH cancels, and the unusual design, is these were MITCHELL produced FDC .... I'll see if The Pom can advise on that.

Brickie143,

I don't have one of these privately printed flight covers but I have seen one somewhere, a long time ago :?:

A couple of points:

1. Though cancelled on 21/3/31, the flight to London via Karachi didn't happen until 1 month later (23/4/31).
2. The cover is well underpaid for that journey by air.
3. The cover lacks the normal "First Official Air Mail Flight" handstamp that was applied to most of the mail on that flight.
4. It hasn't been backstamped or cancelled on delivery to London which should have happened as it was registered.

Looks like that cover went via surface mail rather than by air.

Ahah, another one from Glen (that makes 3 I've seen).

Clearly these are very rare and First Day usage is nice 8)

Lovely covers. I've never seen this design before.

It's definitely by S Mitchell, the red handstamp FIRST DAY COVER being the distinctive feature.

He produced another FDC for this issue, a much more simple design than this one - I'll stick a scan up later.

Cheers
Chris

This illustration is taken from the Australian Cover Society publication "Australian First Day Covers" Page 72.

Hi Glen,
Isn't it funny how these things happen? Your first day cover is very clean and crisp compared to mine - "Wow"!
Thanks for sharing, it was nice to see another one.
I hope mine is worth enough so that I can retire because this week has been hell out there laying bricks .  .
I think I will have to get a flight covers catalog as I am starting to get up a bit of a collection.
Regards Brickie 143.

The Pom,
Thanks for showing the other version of your cover. It makes me wonder, why they did not stick with the Kingsford Smith photo and plane on all of them? :)
Regards
