Since my scanner has now been officially cremated, these digital photos of postcards will have to do. Please add any of yours to the thread:

Nice .. I'll add one soon as it is scanned this arvo.

What happened to the old scanner?

I have a perfectly fine and modern Canon LIDE20 with all software here I just upgraded to, as I needed to do 1500 DPI for magazines .. $40 and it is yours!

They are good units. EVERY scan you have seen on my website in recent times - like the one below - came from that unit, which can be pretty neat quality!

And for around $100 new are amazing value - and seem to be SUPERB for stamps which is all I care about!.

Lake Wendouree is now dry sadly. :D

Interestingly most of the largest stamp dealers in Australia were born in Ballarat

Myself, Richard and Andy Juzwin, Gary Watson, MD of Prestige, and Stewart Wight owner of Status and I.S.Wright.

This is a piece of typical Nazi philatelic propaganda from 1939. It was issued for Hitler's 50th Birthday and denotes the spread of Nazi ambition in Central Europe.

The illustrations are deliberately chosen as examples of what were seen as "Greater German" cities:

Berlin, Munich and Nuremberg: The "cradles" of Naziism within Germany proper.

Vienna and Braunau in Austria, part of Germany following the Anschluss of 1938.

Saarbrucken which was disputed with France in the 1930s until the annexation of the Rheinland.

Eger in the Sudetenland, annexed by Germany from Czechoslovakia in 1938

and Memel - once in East Prussia, later (and again now) known as Klaipeda in Lithuania.

Some enquiry and reply about wagon wheels back in 1892.

and the back had this:

Was just wondering that if the guy replied on the postcard itself, how would the receiver know his answer? Indian smoke signals? :?

This looks and feels old. If the date is anything to go by, this probably belongs to the Archives thread.

I assume the writing is French. Can anyone translate what the card says on the back? Thanks.

Stamper,

Nice card! 8)

In one of the threads, I wax lyrical (well almost) on the size of this exhibition. The Building itself was HUGE for the time.

For anyone interested, the details are at:

Lakatoi 4,

You sure have a good one there. Over 100 years old (can qualify for the centurian thread too) and looking so good. Nicely cancelled too.

One of my friends gave me this (and others) when he sold his house. This and the 100 other items had all been affected by damp and heat.

The second one is English from September 1907 with Edward VII half penny, taxed in Australia at 1d. It took 1 month and 4 days between the two postmarks. Who said the mail was slow.....

I thought I'd include this for our English friends. Luxury living Pommie style.

Two boring, boring postcards from the same correspondence:

Image

But when I looked closely, I noticed the odd 1909/1910 at the bottom of one card. Which helped me decipher the two postmarks. January 1, 1910 (hence the 1909/1910), postmarked from Mil Lel. That's almost 10 years later than the last known postmark from that town.

Here's a postcard that is from July 1898 soliciting for subscription to the first English language Post and Telegraph directory for South Africa. Appears to be right on the changeover from Africaans to English.

Can any South African expert can shed more light?

This is the only postcard that I have. I got it off a friend and even though there is no stamp on it, you can see evidence of one having been stuck to it. I kept it because of the events of 9/11

Here is Australia's first stamp design - literally!

Before the Kangaroos were issued, we had this 1911 KGV full face postcard image. The first postage design ever to bear the word AUSTRALIA.

This one is a pretty scarce item normally of course, and is part of the gorgeous Pictorial set depicting various members of the Royal Family. Not often seen especially postally used.

Someone has used it later on, with the 2d and 3d from Tasmania - date slug appears to be 14 MY 31 to me. Why 5d extra, who ever knows! Even Reg'd was only 3d IIRC. 8)

Anyway a kinky early survivor, and $A40 post free worldwide if it appeals to any members.

Your script French written postcard is not saying much of anything. It is difficult to discern script U's, R's and N's but it looks to be about naming a journal Letters of Corroda - is there such a place in Quebec?

In the meantime, here is a nice postcard depicting the 1895 eruption of Vesuvius sent to me by my friend Knud-Erik.

Image

And the back, with a Resina squared-circle, a script Vesuvio, and a Hamburg arrival.

Iomoon,

Thanks for the interpretation.

Have to agree that your postcard of Mount Vesuvius is dramatic with three different views. Bet you have other postcards of volcanoes.

Andrew,

Just spotted your German card earlier in this thread.

The postmark on that was for the first day of an Agricultural Exhibition ("Landwirtschaft" = Agriculture) in Hamburg in 1947.

Germany was still under Allied Military control at that time, and there were a large number of events publicising the rebuilding of industry (including farming) across the country during that period.

It's amusing that the message simply says "Greetings from Karl" yet it has attracted an American Military Censor mark

Hi, Bill,

The card is to commemorate the consecration of the war memorial in Leipzig.

The inscription on the postmark is the same.

Messages on cards of this age are always difficult because of the handwriting, but it seems to be the usual "greetings from the festival" type thing - I don't think there's anything more profound than that...

It's a nice attractive card, and a great example of German-Gothic early 20th Century artwork.

Bill,

If you ever need a quick translation, this is pretty good:

http://babelfish.altavista.com/

For translations from German to English, you might need to break some of the German "Compound" words down into smaller elements...

I am surprised there is a PO there at tip of NZ!

I think you get to it along a 90 mile beach or something.

Started it once in a rental CAR was not wise so turned back! 8)

Hi,

I've inherited a large collection of photo postcards, any thoughts of where i can get these valued?

I've picked out these two at random.

The first postcard is one of my Father's and is marked Sheppard & Co.

Jim .. I think you said your father was the photographer on the first one?

LOVE the way they dressed back then!

this would be what - about early 20th Century?

Sheppard and Co was his company.

Most of my photo cards are around 1910 - 20,

I need to sort through them all and catalogue them into date and place.
