Here's an oddity from my collection. I sent a copy to my brother and simply asked him what he thought of it, he replied that someone had spilt emulsion paint over the card. It's actually a hand-painted or drawn astronomy home made postcard from Germany dated 1898.

Plus, it's very accurate; the North Star is in the right position
with the Big Dipper (Grossen Baren = Great Bear), etc.

Way over US $100 to the right collector. Looks like white ink
on leather?

1892 postcard from Cortina, which was then in the Tirol, but is now in Italy, to Portobello in England. I take it that's the Portobello near Wolverhampton in the West Midlands.

Anyway, I'd like to ask if anyone can decipher the last address line and also what the F.B. stands for.

The last address line is actually N.B. which stands for North Britain i.e. Scotland. You'll find Scotland addressed like that on a lot of Victorian covers and cards

See what you think of these cards, can anyone tell me more about them. Theyre individual cards that when put together make up a picture of Napoleon, the reverse of the cards don't tell me anything about who issued them. The complete picture is made up of 12 cards, unfortunately I have only 9 and would love the other 3, my chances methinks are very slim !

It might be on card stock, but it looks like leather, by color
and texture. If leather, when you hold one end, the other
end should sag completely; card stock is more rigid, even
if old.

This is one of those items of indeterminate value that has
a fanatic buyer somewhere. The two-step process: put the
card on eBay or Delcampe with a very high reserve.

The chances are good it will attract some bids, but will not
sell. On the second listing, without Reserve, make your
"Start" bid about 20% under the highest bid received the
first time, and hope that it does sell.

This is the so-called "free appraisal" feature of eBay.

I think it is an absolutely terrific card. Even an astronomer
might bid, just to display the card on his office wall.

An interesting 1899 postal card to Fort Bombay, East India:

Image

The rear of the card has information on a meeting to be held to discuss various medical procedures. In 1899 you'd have to wonder what sort of wonderful advice was being given out to members of the medical profession :?

Perhaps "If the patient has a sore toe, amputate the whole leg" or "If the patient has a headache, amputate the ......."

Despite it's obvious condition problems, I was happy to find this today when sorting through some recent purchases. The message is pretty interesting & worth the dime I paid. (No shipping, either.)
Postmarked in 1907.

Dear Harry
I received your postal this morning. No Harry I never recdeived your letter at all. I sure have been looking for one though. I'll write you a letter just as soon as I get time. Papa has the smallpox and I am boarding away from home now. I have sent you several postal cards. Have you received them?

Here's an interesting one found among some USA Postcards. I passed by it a few times before I checked the back and discovered it to be an interesting card. The card hasn't been posted directly, but I assume was posted inside an envelope. The front shows Roman Catholic Cathedral, Westminster, or as we know it more as Westminster Cathedral. Again the card is undated but we can roughly date it from the letter on the reverse. "This view is of the Catholic Cathedral it is a magnificent place but it will not be finished for many years yet." The writer then goes on to say "You will no doubt know by now that Mrs Pankhurst is let out I call it a shame If she were some poor woman she would not be treated as well. fancy to tempt her to eat they put chicken & Lovely food beside her - a prisoner !"
Mrs Pankhurst being Emmeline Pankhurst a famous Suffragette was imprisoned in 1908, and the concecration ceremony of Westminster Cathedral didn't take place until 1910, so the card must be 1908.(sorry for the novel !)

Moral of the tale look at the back of a card, even if it looks ordinary you never know what living history you might find !

I've been looking for quite a while for a postcard with Abdullah of Jordan on. The original one, that is, from the 1920s. Not the current one. Does anybody know if these exist?

This one barely qualifies as military as there is a warship in the harbour i think. But used in San Francisco with the 1 cent expo commerative stamp. And the wonderful fold out view make this in my mind special. There are individual views on the other side of the event and individual views on this side as well. Alltogether the views fold out to about a length of 11 cards. This one was also special because i spent about 3 hrs one afternoon at a show going through a well known Canadian dealers dollar covers box and spent another hour making sure i only paid a dollar for this one as well.

Just think, only nine years after the devastating 1906 earthquake, San Francisco staged the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, celebrating the opening of the Panama Canal in August, 1914.

This is an interesting site and it tells you what's left of the exposition too:-

Here's a card that just now went unsold on eBay. I was
greatly impressed by the "3rd class" accommodations.
The photos are c. 1926.

Doug, she was refitted in October 1926 to carry 425-cabin 365-tourist and 650-3rd class passengers, so maybe these are the after shots?

The card is postmarked June 21, 1926, so this is "before".
I'd say she was ripe for a do-over.

Here's an interesting card, of French origin. It has a stamp on the front but I don't know why, as it doesn't have an address on the reverse as you can see. I don't read French, so I haven't a clue what's been written or where the Trumpeters actually are. The card is dated 1906.

Stamps and postmarks on postcards were a choice souvenir 100+ years ago. Collectors would get organized in swap clubs / circuits, and many would insist on receiving postcards with stamps on the front. It was, in sorts, a merging of the two greatest collecting hobbies of the day.

Collectors could also receive postcards by mail order from exotic places. I have seen German language ads announcing 10 Egypt postcards sent to a desired address for a given fee, for instance.

Germany and France were not only colonial powers, but also postcard pioneers. On US cards, for instance, you will often notice Printed in Germany.

Germany had superior techniques of lithography as well
as embossing, which the U.S. industry could not duplicate
at the cost. Slightly earlier cards are also found marked
"Printed in Saxony."

This all came to a stop in 1914, of course.

In France, as of 1902, the sender could place the stamp
on the front or back of the card, as desired. I have several
hundred French cards 1900-1910, divided about equally.

Here's an interesting little card, no note of printer, it has a large crease which is unfortunate. Yahoo babelfish translates it as "you will triumph because you summers the force with the service over the right l' England, France, Russia take l' formally; commitment to maintain l' independence and l' ingrite of Belgium".
As a Scotsman myself it tickles me that the suggestion is the "Kiltie" is an Englishman.

To clean up the French a little, "You will triumph because
YOU are the force in the service of (human) rights..."

"England, France, and Russia take seriously the duty of
maintaining the independence and integrity of Belgium."

"Reproduction (of this card) forbidden."

Here are a couple of funny cards from 1908, both addressed to a Mr West.

Image
Image

Written on the back is My how you have grown since you have had this picture taken
On the upper left is the title for this card CURLY COONS

Image
Image

It appears Mr West was a Blk (black) Face Comedian

Obviously both would today be considered totally politically incorrect if not downright racist.

This German one has no illustration on the front.

Close up of the engraved portions. Not sure if the town illustrated is Nuremberg/Nürnberg ?

My latest purchase of a Local card was sent to Bendigo, here is the front and I've turned the reverse of the card upside down so you can read the message.

Got these next 2 items on ebay a few years ago, they won't be everyone's cup of tea but I like them :) They're Postcard Copper Plates on wood from Kirkcaldy, though I haven't managed to track down the actual postcards yet !
Image
Titled "Burn in the Raith, Kirkcaldy". Hopefully you can make out the picture on it.

Image
The second one shows a Lake in Kirkcaldy

They're interesting but impossible to display

Found this (advertising?) postcard at a local second hand dealer:

Image

It was printed by Danone Waters in the USA in 2000.

... and no, I didn't buy it for its philatelic interest ... but because the subject looks exactly like the human resources officer at my workplace, especially the hairdo ... well, as much of her as is normally visible. I showed it to some colleagues to get their opinion ... the immediate reaction was always "Where did you get such a picture of our HRO?". She was totally flattered when I presented her with a copy.

Hi Muruk, Nice card! I remember that ad campaign for that water company! I was just wondering if your workplace is hiring? Maybe I can get myself an appointment for an interview!

Seriously though, Be Careful what you show co-workers! I have read some stories of some major trouble being caused by "inappropriate" content being shown around the workplace. I guess some people have a problem with..." Hey I was looking through this magazine, and I noticed that this hot girl looked a lot like you..." O.K. in my books, but maybe not for some?

Has everyone noticed what the Water Company's name is?

EVIAN >>>>>spelled backwards>>>>> NAIVE, coincidence? At $2.50CDN for 500ml, I think not!

Thanks for sharing that one Muruk, 8)

Have a Good One,

Skilo54

You are quite right, and I did consider that aspect, but as this was a public domain item without any censorship classification there was no problem. Much like an ad in Woman's Day or similar magazine.

This is a local card I just bought off ebay. to some people it's probably ruined with the writing on it but I think it adds to the card. Oh and if the vendor had shown the reverse I think they'd probably have sold it for more than the £5 I bought it for.

Just noticed this thread, and just enough time before the beer needs replenishing to get this loaded.

Luckily the sender dated the Postcard, the date stamp is barely legible and the only thing I can make out is London.
