At the dawn of the Intermodal Age: Here are images of a 1963 postcard depicting United States Lines S.S. American Charger, one of the last of the traditional (and already technologically obsolete) freighters to be launched, just as containerization was changing not only oceanic shipping, but also revolutionizing world trade. Franked with a semi-postal stamp, North Holland polder mill, issued by the Netherlands on April 24, 1963, Scott No. B374.

I was up at Bright recently and came across this unused Postcard in a 'collectables' shop and had to have it.

I have recently watched the movie Beneath Hill 60, which is about the Australian Tunnellers in World War 1. (Well worth a watch)

Image

This was about the only other card worth having.

I think I remember reading that octagonal postmarks were used on postbusses.

What is silly about this card is that it has flags which never fly at the same time. Hong Kong's was not used until 1997 and Romania's gone in 1989.

In between brutal snowstorms up here in the northeast USA, I came across this oh so tantalizing 1977 picture postcard franked with a Mobius strip stamp issued by Brazil in 1974, Scott No. 1260.

These may be common down under, but I thought members may be interested.

No chance of getting similar images on Google maps, not even of the Oval at Rushcutters Bay, too much development.
Image
Image

But this one was easier, King's Cross.
Image

Now you might have thought that if anything was worth keepting it might be the grand looking Kings Cross Theatre at centre left, but no, the plain looking building opposite under the CAPSTAN advert is still there, but the Theatre building now seems to be about 30 storeys high! Maybe they kept the interior, I can't find any reference on the www. I'd put this at early 1950s, would that be right?
ImageImage

Incidentally is this the same 'Cross' where the girls refused Garry Shearston's cheques in 'Sydney Town'? (Which was ok, "as I said as he shut my book, the truth is I only came to look.")

Ian, this link may interest you as it has a before and after of your Kings Cross postcard and a little write up (not too far from the top), in fact, the whole blog is before and afters. You are correct in that it is 50's.

http://sydneytecture.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated

The aerial of Sydney is great and I used to live a bit further along from the printing and used to walk down to luna park (the big white area to the right of the bridge) on a Saturday for a bit of fun. Thanks for the memories

Brummie,

Great site. Can't help thinking that the place looked a lot better, especially in the dark, with all those advertising lights flashing all over the place like London's Picadilly Circus. Same as the 1st picture on the page - that billboard can't look as good as the old lights used to?

I noticed on gmaps that the red-brick King's Cross Hotel building was still there - amazing really when everything else was descrated. That Carlton Crest really is an appallingly phallic lump of concrete :!:

I'm guessing the Rushcutters Oval is not the same as the Sydney Cricket Ground?

Makes you wonder doesn't it?

I think Sydney liked to think of itself as a modern city without regard to its history but I think it is very slowly rethinking its past. What I do notice is when a building is listed and developers want to develop the site, the listed building mysteriously burns down  It has happened to many old buildings.

That site was very good and I appreciate the work that has gone into showing the before and after photos, a labour of love methinks :?:

In amongst a pile of GB cards from 1902-10 were these two

The first from India depicting Shipping on the Hughly river in Calcutta with a Calcutta 10/5/06 cancel as well as a Sea Post Office cancel 12/5/06.

A private mailing card from the USA depicting the Table Rock in Winter with a Niagara Falls 13/9/03

I've not read anything about these, but I often wondered why so much of the mail India - UK also had the Sea Post transit stamp when it could just have been sacked up for UK and left intact until it arrived; likewise mail for Aden. I suppose it gave the PO on board something to do.

Is that Bavarian postcard hand painted? It is nice!

I am enthralled by the couple on this postcard. I can't decide if they are husband/wife or father/daughter. Either way, they don't look like they have led an easy life, and you can assume that to be true considering it was mailed in 1939. But they look so happy, and contented. Oh, to be like that when I am that age!

And the back, with a nice pictorial cancel:

Gifted to me by a very sweet lady I feel fortunate to have met while painting her house!

Hi Brummie
The only thing I can think of is that they must have been promoting the Expo ahead of time with the logo stamp. Also this young person who these were sent to seemed to have a share stamps on postcards,. one of which I know worked for the postal servivce from reading them .They all seem to have some kind of registration ID of the person who sent them to him .I have recently posted others from him they are an interesting read.
Regards.
Brickie.

It is hard to imagine today but once it was two islands joined by a natural causeway and it was said to look like glasses, hence the name.

It is still Naval property with an exclusion zone so it receives very little publicity.

Fairly interesting old Edwardian card(1903) which appears to be from a servant in Buckingham Palace. Narrative on reverse refers to a trip to Windsor for Ascot(Horse Racing).

Here is a brief history of the Company taken from a New York University website:

Vienna. Publisher: Postkartenverlag Brüder Kohn, Wien, est. 1898. This postcard company was established in 1898 by Salomon Kohn. The company's "main product was high-quality art postcards, mostly based on paintings by contemporary artists. Although the business had flourished during the first two decades of the century, because of the death of [Salomon's] brother Adolf, an Austrian soldier, during World War I, the dismantling of the Austrian monarchy, and the postwar economic depression, it gradually fell upon hard times during the 1920s and 1930s, and [Salomon] struggled from crisis to crisis to maintain his business and support his family...After the Nazi Anschluss (annexation) of Austria in 1938, the family business was confiscated [and Salomon] was forced to continue to manage it without compensation...[Salomon and his wife] were deported to the concentration camps at Theresienstadt and then Auschwitz, where they perished.

Thanks for the info, it is indeed a very sad ending which I was unaware of.

I had already gleaned some info previous from somewhere (posted below) , but I have still been unable to get any clue as to whether this Series 735-1 card was part of a set or not. I have seen another one of this card advertised for 24Euro, but nothing further.

There is a Brüder Kohn book available in Europe,
Aus dem Postkartenverlag Brüder Kohn : Wiener Persönlichkeiten...
From the postcard publisher brothers Kohn: Wiener personalities ...
by Wilhelm Deutschmann
Not sure what the book covers, but I cant get access to it
Image

Around 1900, mail was delivered within Austria three times a day. Notes flew back and forth like e-mail. Salomon Kohn was one of the first publishers who recognized the potential of this new market. In 1898 he founded with his brothers Adolf and Alfred the Postkartenverlag Brüder Kohn. He published portraits of artists, musicians, actors, the imperial family, as well as "artistic postcards" (Kunstpostkarten), designed by contemporary artists. The business grew to be the largest publishing house of postcards in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The Kohn brothers exported postcards as far as the United States, and in addition to their own production in Austria took on commissions from the Wiener Werkstätte.

Hi! In the event of recent news I thought this postcard quite interesting.
The post mark is Madison Square Station September 16 / 1911/.
At the time the tallest building in the world having 600,000 square ft,of floor space ,it is 486 ft, in hight and used daily by 20,000 people. The cost of the entire building $6,350,000 .Explained on the back of postcard.
Then of coarse taller buildings were built and taller again and the rest is history .
I think what struck me most when reading this card was the date Sep ,1911
and the relation to the tallest building in the world .If only we knew.
A little spooky dont you think ?
Regards

I lived in Durban , South Africa for the best part of 30 years and as a result collect old postcards of the city

Unused only I'm afraid so forgive me for not having any philatelic content

I have just received (I paid far too much for it ) but I am unaccountably chuffed to bits with it

Image

I am able to date it very accurately to exactly 1937 but this section of Smith Street remained the same until the early 60's when I moved there

For anyone who's been to Durban - enjoy

The lit-up sign at upper left "Brighter Homes" is sort of puzzling -- an advertisement for the electric company, or what?

Or maybe the name of a movie on a marquee?

It's a neon sign on the side of a building further down towards the beach after the end of the moviehouse/theatre strip

Don't know what "Brighter Homes " signifies though - electricity supplies at that time were State owned

One year later this is the same view as the postcard:-

Brummie, that very nice photo is taken many years later. It is hard to tell but my guess is sometime in the 1990s. The caption simply acknowledges the date of opening.

Without wanting to highjack the thread, my first response to the photo on the 1957 postcard was to recall a trip over the bridge on one of those double decker buses in 1958.

I was doing National Service at the time and we had paraded through the streets of Sydney. There was a military tattoo that night at the Sydney Cricket Ground and, to fill in time, I took the ferry ride to Manly (Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care).

That is a trip I will never forget. From the top of the ferry it was possible to look up at the approaching waves and shortly after we arrived at Manly all services were cancelled due to the dangerous conditions.

I had to get back to Sydney so, foolishly, I went up the front of the top deck on the bus and proceeded to get thoroughly seasick.

Little did I know that I would, just a few years later, be working for Mosman Council and be responsible for rating all those properties shown in the image.

A nice postcard of a delightful area, and made all the better by the stamps used.

Thanks Kevin, I didn't even look just saw the date and presumed  Looking at the cars, it couldn't be 1958.

Ahh Manly - I fell in love with it at first sight -spent a fantastic week there - the only place in the world I aspire to live in.

Doubt I'll get there though :(

Not exactly perfect with the big scratch at the right side but to me it's a great Card. It's a garage from here in Kirkcaldy, postmarked 1920 to Paris, though I believe it to be a wee bit earlier than that. The building itself has been a Hotel, and lately a Nursing Home, now lying empty.

Lovely card! I don't mind a bit of damage when it's that good and that old.
At that time many photos were printed on postcard stock, so this may never have been published as a commercial card for sale.

OTOH the back would tell you: it may have been produced for the garage as give-aways (though I don't think the Edwardian businessmen gave much away!)
