Fantastic Cover There Hills
Having Both the smiling boys on one cover is major drool material.

I also save The old Health/ Air combos
But only have the "Boys" as singles.

Both Smiling Boys on the one cover and even on separate covers - nice indeed 8)

Here's a 1932 FFC from Wellington to Nelson with a "No response" notation:

Nice block of six there Glen !!

Your rarities page is a pleasure to scroll through !! :)

I have the 7d NZ Airmail O/P stamp on many of my flight covers .. except on one particular cover where the stamp has escaped the post office postmark .... don't know if that would add a lot more value to it though ?

Nice one Wayne ..think I prefer yours to mine..very clean and fresh ...I remember years ago ..could have been in the early nineties ..I was in NZ aand visited a stamp dealer in the North Island ..we were talking about the NZ flight covers with the overprinted 7d blue air mail stamp ..and he told me at one stage certain collectors were buying the flight covers and soaking the stamps off ..as there was a BIG market it seems at the time to sell the stamp fine used ....what a waste of good flight covers I thought at the time !! :(

Mailcovers my *GUESS* is that way over 50% of the FFC with 7d TT have had the stamps soaked.

The covers are often ratty and foxed and ugly, as they were often given to kids as a souvenir.

As the stamp is worth about $40 fine used, and a ratty cover about half or less, simple maths. :)

An April 1934 "boomerang" cover to NZ (note the somewhat interesting recipient). It's from the issue limited to 500. Pity about the couple of rust spots, the folds & it's a bit tatty, but I like it anyway.

Neat cover Lakatoi. Heaps have rust spots but I just
ignore that and appreciate the cover for the overall interest.

Between 1977 and 1979 Air New Zealand had sightseeing flights aboard a DC10 aircraft to the Antarctic. They came to an abrupt halt in November 1979 when that flight slammed into Mt Erebus with the loss of all 257 passengers and crew. The cause was Whiteout conditions. This cover went a year earlier and made it safely back.

Stamper,

That's a nice Apollo cover that I haven't seen before.

Is that a common one in NZ?

Hi gavin-h
Yes it is a fairly common cover.
I would have got it off 'Terry Hooper Covers' over here in NZ
I see he still has them selling at US$ 7.20 on his web site under the heading (covers)
So not anything rare but New Zealands way of marking the day of splash down in 1969.

My God .. he SHOULD join up .. he is offering $US35 each for these - many of which I've left in junk boxes as worthless turkeys. What an amazing offer!

The stamps are common but the Cachet could be a rare one.
Maybe you have found a wee pot of gold in that junk box.

Stamper .. trust me I have a very good memory for cachets. 8)

That one I would have assumed was a few cents untidily addressed like that, on a common issue FDC. I have handled that pretty recenty.

Things like this sell for ~$1,000 on ebay that many overseas dealers would also regard as being worth pennies. All comes down to local knowledge. :D

Am I alone in thinking that NZ stamps & covers are very expensive in their homeland. Just take a look at the online catalogue from every well known NZ dealer.

Even with the exchange rate, they are really off the planet compared to the prices the same type/quality NZ sell for here.

Why do I feel some angst is coming my way awfully soon.....

Yes admin I can just see your brain ticking over with that
" I know I've got that one somewhere" memory recall.

It all comes down to supply and demand.
We demand it and you supply it.

I take it that $1000 cover is a hard one to come by.
I bet not many people have that one.
Some covers we will just never see such as the 1906
NZ ChCh Exhib Claret on cover rolyj spoke of.

Lakatoi for years the larger NZ dealers have managed to get a lot more than the same things sell for outside NZ.

No idea why folks cheerfully paid the price, but they always DID!

With the Kiwi only 10% less than $A right now, I am selling a lot of stuff acorss the ditch. More than ever.

The way I ship them, most recipients dodge the dreaded NZ GST upon arrivals well.

Back to the topic ....... :D

Sold this one a couple months back .. unbelievable to have o/p OS KGV heads on a NZ flight cover .. that otherwise would be worth only 10% of this price!

Image

Image

Amazing use of KGV Head "OS" Officials on First Flight Cover: The April 24 1934 "Faith In Australia" first flight to New Zealand. Eustis Cat #369 - value $40 for ANY cover. This one bears the remarkable franking of FIVE x 1d OS and 1 x 2d KGV heads, all tied by Marrickville NSW cds on April 5. Three different Auckland backstamps of April 12 and 13, also Sydney transit April 5, and superb strike of the violet First Flight handstamp.

Mint KGV head stamps overprinted "OS" were NOT sold to the public at any time, for any reason. (Not to be confused with the 6d Brown "OS" Kingsford Smith which WAS sold to the public. I have some magnificent FFC to UK from 1931, franked with that stamp normal AND alongside overprinted OS - price $100 each.) These KGV heads "OS" were strictly for official use, and use for private purposes was strictly prohibited and unlawful - as you might expect. To see six of them on a FFC is quite a sight.

As an additional bonus, the central 1d stamp at top is dramatically off centred - see my current "Stamp News" article on how this occurred under John Ash's direction -
www.glenstephens.com/sndecember06 - and view the even more striking mint 1d pair I very rapidly sold for $A350 of the 1d green "OS".

A lovely and doubtless unique KGV specialist collector item - $A150

Mailcovers ... that looks familiar. :)

Yes it is a beauty. Signed by sherpa Tenzing Norgay as well, and Ted Roberts and Nelson Eustis.

My guess is at least $A200 on today's market.

Glen

Yes Glen the names on it alone are very interesting

Sir Edmund Hillary
Tenzing
Captain SS Gill (Helicopter Pilot )
Captain N Buckley ( Patron of the Aust.Air Mail Society )
EW Roberts ( President)
Nelson Eustis ( Secretary )
Vola Eustis ( Passenger )

...I remember you had one advertised some years back in your listings ..although I didn't get this particular one from you ....The envelope too is very interesting ..and looks like it is made from some sort of rice paper ?...I remember Nelson telling me about it in a letter. As far as I can remember ..the cost of the Cover was around $10 way back in 1978-79

Really nice & historic cover there mailcovers 8)

Though from the Land of the Long White Cloud these are only partially first flight covers. Some idiot back in time cut these from the original covers

When I picked those covers up from him, I pointed him in the direction of the Board. Just had an email from him to say he'll have a good look at the weekend.

Just joined up - I'm interested in the Hillary cover from mailcovers if you can part with it. :)
