Wikipaedia has this to report on a certain Colonel Heathcote:

"Colonel Alfred Spencer Heathcote VC (29 March 1832 - 21 February 1912) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Heathcote was 25 years old, and a lieutenant in the 60th Rifles (later The King's Royal Rifle Corps), British Army during the Indian Mutiny when the following deed took place at the Siege of Delhi for which he was awarded the VC:

60th Rifles, Lieutenant Alfred Spencer Heathcote

For highly gallant and daring conduct at Delhi throughout the Siege, from June to September, 1857, during which he was wounded. He volunteered for services of extreme danger, especially during the six days of severe fighting in the streets after the Assault. Elected by the Oflicers of his Regiment.

He later achieved the rank of colonel and emigrated to Australia. He is buried at St James Anglican Churchyard, Bowral, New South Wales, Australia (Grave to left of entrance. Headstone). There is also a memorial for him at St. James' Anglican Church, Sydney, New South Wales.

His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Victoria Barracks in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia."

He must be the same Colonel Heathcote, the addressee on the two covers

Here's another candidate who was CB rather than VC:

Heathcote - Colonel Mark Henry, CB - 14th Bengal Lancers - died 22nd October 1883.
Born in London, 4th February 1836. Served Perak 1875 (medal and bar), Afghanistan 1878 (medal and bar, CB). Married Louisa Ommaney at Simla, 17th February 1877.
Grave at Lahore - "Sacred to the memory of Mark Henry Heathcote. Colonel. C.B. Commandant XIVth Bengal Lancers died at Lahore 22nd Octbr 1883 aged 47."

Hi Nigel,
Thank you for the info.
I note Mark Henry Heathcote died in 1883 and he was attached to 14 Bengal Lancers and there was no mention that he had migrated to Australia. The covers were both dated 1884.

The covers were redirected to 19th Regiment and Alfred Spencer migrated to and was buried in Australia. I got the covers in Melbourne where I was a college student back in the 50s.

It's an interesting puzzle. I think the following is possible:

1. The letters were sent to MH Heathcote (with his CB distinction). The three you've shown are dated from Sep. 1883 to Feb. 1884.

2. MH Heathcote died on 22 Oct. 1883.

3. MH Heathcote had been a lieutenant in the 19th Native Infantry in 1861 when he was gazetted to the new Bengal Staff Corps.

4. When undelivered the letters were forwarded to the 19th Native Infantry and sent by them under cover to his brother AS Heathcote VC in Australia.

5. AS Heathcote was already living in NSW in the early 1870s and had a daughter born there in 1874.

6. The memorial to AS Heathcote in St. James Anglican Church in Sydney gives his rank as captain: "Sacred to the memory of Captain Alfred Spencer Heathcote VC late of the 60th Royal Rifles Born 29th March 1832 Died 21st February 1912"

A cover with no street number and name addressed to a Mr. Herskowitz in Okla City.
I found the attached note which, to a novice like me, means next to nothing except that the author stated the stamp (#546) was a very good item and to take care of it.

Can any expert please throw some light and comment on the matter presented?

Thanks and regards,
Ekaraya

Just a quick comment hoping that one of the experts will give you a response.

Do you think that the letter refers to the stamp on the cover?

I wonder if there may have been another stamp within the envelope. There are two reasons for this thought: firstly that is how I read the letter; and second, would a coil stamp be perforated on all four sides?

They were in Australia until Decimal Currency.

I read it that the letter is referring to the cover. He says he went through Thousands of letters in the Herskowitz estate and only found 2, and as the envelope is addressed to said Mr Herskowitz, I'm assuming this is one of them on this cover.

I googled 32 West 18th Street NYC and discovered that the address is now a condo building:

"A Lot of Europe Inside

As if living in Chelsea wasn't chic enough, this condo offers a selection of European airs to impress even the most discerning continental.

Just off Fifth Avenue, in a historic building at 32 West 18th Street over top of the Sassoon salon, the three-bedroom, listed by Corcoran, has a Valcucine-designed kitchen, an Italian marble bath and access to all kinds of boutiques—pronounced, of course, with a French accent. For that added dose of authenticity, the thermomasseur tub is the perfect place to work off all the aches and pains from the overseas flight you never took.

And if after a while you start to feel like your own ultra-cool $4.5 million apartment is judging you, go up to your cabana-style roof deck and remind yourself this is still America, where baseball caps and shorts still reign."—Laura Kusisto

ekaraya,

You should post that cover in the "You ask the questions" forum, and I am sure you will get some good info on the stamp. If it is a "coil waste" stamp, which is what the number refers to, and a certain 'Type', it could be US$600 on cover. If it is perf 10½ x 11 and a different 'Type', it could be US$60,000 on cover. Worst case scenario is still a valuable item, if the info in the letter is correct.

It might be a good thing to investigate, as it is probably of more than nominal value!

Good luck!
Kristine

I found the following interesting:

"The term "coil waste" is applied to some U.S. regular stamps beginning in 1919 that consisted of odd-sized sheets of stamps from the end of coil-production press runs.

Already having been coil perforated in one direction, these were perforated in the other direction and sold as regular non-coil stamps.

The stamps so produced were:
1919 - 1¢ green Washington Head, perf 11 x 10, size 19½-20 mm wide by 22-22¼ mm high (Scott 538).
1919 - 2¢ carmine rose Washington Head (two types), perf 11 x 10, size 19½-20 mm wide by 22-22¼ mm high (Scott 539 and 540).
1921 - 3¢ violet Washington Head, perf 11 x 10, size 19½-20 mm wide by 22-22¼ mm high (Scott 541).
1921 - 1¢ green Washington Head, perf 11, size 19½-20 mm wide by 22 mm high (Scott 545).
1921 - 2¢ carmine rose Washington Head, perf 11, size 19½-20 mm wide by 22 mm high (Scott 546).
1923 - 1¢ green Franklin Head, perf 11 x 10, size 19¾ mm wide by 22¼ mm high (Scott 578).
1923 - 2¢ carmine Washington Head, perf 11 x 10, size 19¾ mm wide by 22¼ mm high (Scott 579).
1923 - 1¢ green Franklin Head, perf 11, size 19¾ mm wide by 22¼ mm high (Scott 594).
1923 - 2¢ carmine Franklin Head, perf 11, size 19¾ mm wide by 22¼ mm high (Scott 595).
[see Editor's Note]

This method of using odd leftovers from coil production, which produced some very rare varieties, was so unpopular that, according to Konwiser (American Stamp Collector's Dictionary), the philatelic community under the leadership of Arthur E. Owen was successful in having the practice stopped. After 1924 all coil waste was destroyed." - http://www.stampnotes.com/Notes_from_th ... ote502.htm

Comments: The stamp on the cover is Washington Head 2cents. Could that be Scott #546 mentioned above?

I got this cover recently. I like it because of the 'Amb. Calais' cancellation. I don't really know much about covers as I mostly collect stamps, but I believe this cancellation must have been applied on the ship over to France, as 'Amb Calais' would mean 'Ambulant Calais', ie the itinerant Post Office of Calais.

The BT cancellation on the back, with the crown, which would have been applied before the letter left England, intrigues me. If anyone knows more about that, I would love to read about it.

Cover posted at the City of London office where the stamp was cancelled with the numeral 21 in diamond with 13 bars. The earliest record I have for this type is 1857. Transfered to the Foreign office where they struck their evening double outer ring date stamp on the reverse for the 20th November 1858.

This double ring stamp was in use from 1847 and in the early period of use was probably used on items of mail that required some kind of special treatment - such as the checking of rates etc ... Various codes at the top are known.

The mark top left is a forwarding agents stamp and may have been the agent taking the items from the Port of London to Calais - but this would need further checking ...

Letter arrived in Calais on the 21 November as per the standard arrival mark on the front. From here it traveled to Paris (same date and was put on the Paris - Bordeaux TPO. The letter arrived in Bordeaux the following day (22 November) where it was stamped on arrival.

The numeral, PD and agents mark are all listed in my database at http://philatelicweb.com/pmks/

Regards .. ALLAN

Ok this cover might have a story to tell or it might not it might be reasonable valuable or it might not lol you be the judge. Some background

In 1933 General Balbo commanded the Italian Air Armada from Italy to Chicago via Newfoundland. Canada, and the United States, en route to the Chicago Century of Progress Exhibition. The fleet, consisting of twenty-four hydro-planes, landed in Cartwright Harbour, Labrador on July 12, 1933, and departed the next day after refueling. On the return trip via New York, Newfoundland and the Azores, they landed off Shoal Harbour and Clarenville, Trinity Bay, made preparations for the next leg, and departed August 8. Balbo had agreed to take mail from Newfoundland to Rome. Eight thousand and forty stamps of 1933 Air Mail Issue (75 cent denomination) were surcharged and overprinted with 1933/GEN. BALBO/FLIGHT./$4.50. He took 1,153 pieces of mail, 1,083 postmarked St. John's and seventy postmarked Shoal Harbour.

So this cover is addressed to St Johns, Newfoundland from Cartwright Labrador with a written Per Italian Air Mail on the front. So far this makes no sense why is this potential right? The Chicago machine cancell on the back for July 19th 1933. So a bomerang cover on both outward and inward to Newfoundland on this historic flight . How rare is that.

Any way a nice story with just enough to make it possible

amfhf1,

I have a question . . . for my education  . What is the "L & S Post." overprint that is printed on the stamp vertically? I couldn't find it in my Scott catalogue, and you didn't mention it in your story.

SG 229, issued 9 February 1933, Kris - overprint for ordinary postal use, in case you're looking among the airmails :D

"Land and Sea"
Unitrade Catalogue, ...Newfoundland 211, with a value on cover of double fine used, but if the quantities quoted are correct, then rarity factor of air mail first flight, and intermediate journey, plus interest of Italian collectors would bring far higher. This may be almost unique, :?:  but the Canadians need to to add the details :? :? :?: :?:

Now, I am not sure on this one,BUT it appears that the envelope may have been twice used.

postage stamp ( Canada issue of 1932 King George V "Medallion" ) and cancelled by postal authorities 28 September, 1933, St Johns, Newfoundland?? to St Johns with no need to travel by ship, then later reused with the S. S. Nascopie cachet if it is dated 1939 ( a bit hard to read for my eyes). I am just confusing myself with this trying to work it out. :? :? :?

Ok, makes more sense and a nice item,
Seamail, either delivered to the ship or posted on board ( but not delivered in bagged mail ) where some person authorised to do so place the ship mark, then delivered to postal authorities at St Johns, who cancelled the stamp and completed delivery.
Is there any indication of orgin on the reverse?
The S. S. Nascopie was largely used to deliver coal to St Johns, and other Hudson Bay operations of the shipping company, but I was unaware that Canada had a history of such "Sea Mail" being cancelled on board. Presumably the shipping company were paid a fee to collect and deliver mail on their travels, but it took a few days sailing to reach St Johns.
The ship itself was wrecked in 1947.
Nice item.

St Lucia to Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada. I like the tin foil picture added to this adds a level to this cover. Also the back has a number of interesting strikes. Boston Mass MAY 24th to Toronto Terminal A May 25th . To (Tor) Toronto (Lon) London (Wind) Windsor RPO May 25th (SIM) Simcoe (ST T) ST Thomas and (LO) RPO May 26th Tillsonburg May 26th

Boomerang covers are some what common in some areas. This one I had never seen before and is in an area of the world its a little less common in I think at least.
Nice Northern Trans Atlantic FFC F.A.M. 18 New York to Liverpool and back. Jun 24th 1939 cancell and then back again from Liverpool with a 19 July 1939 cancell. I wish I had a look at MR G.C. McNamara collection in its heyday he seemed to put some time and effort into as well as money.

The cover joelk previously posted with the "Amb. Cal." cds reminded me of this favorite cover in my collection.

It was addressed to a gentleman in care of Drexel Harjes & Co. in Paris. The firm was a major lender to the French government following the Franco-Prussian War and supervised the transfer of $50 million dollars from the U.S. to France to acquire interests in building the Panama Canal.

I assume the blue dated oval at the upper left front of the cover (where the return address now normally goes) was a receiving mark applied by the company?

The stamp was postmarked at Tunbridge Wells (England) on August 23rd, 1876, and the cover received a Mount Ephraim backstamp on the same date. I know Mount Ephraim is located in Tunbridge Wells, so I'm not sure why there was a need for the backstamp. Was the "820" cancel applied at a different post office?

The cover received the "Angl. Amb. Cal. B" marking similar to joelk's on the next day (August 24) when it reached Calais and was finally backstamped "Paris Poste Restante" before, presumably, arriving safely at its destination.

Hi,
Thought this might be an interesting block, government use, on cover, Port Moresby to Melbourne, via Rabaul. Don't know why they didn't fly directly south.

A cover with an eye-catching hand-painted illustration - The knight defeated. Sent from Labuan in 1912 using Straits Settlement stamp to Tirau, New Zealand.

Some flights were Queensland, Port Moresby, Rabaul or Lae, then back to Queensland
without a second stop over at Port Moresby.

Thanks Philanthropist,

I guess if they stated "Via Rabaul" then that would mean it would go out on an earlier flight. Doesn't seem to have been uprated to go the extra distance, but having said that I don't know what the letter rates were at the time for mail from PNG to Australia.

Regards, Summo.
