For those with an interest in the history and stories about Australian lighthouses, in today's Herald-Sun there is an article about audio tours able to be downloaded from ABC radio - www.abc.net.au/local/lighthouses

There were 3 postage stamps featuring lighthouses issued by Croatia on 18 October 2011. Here is the first:

Image

Prišnjak 1886. Active; focal plane 19 m (62 ft); three white flashes every 10 s. 15 m (49 ft) octagonal stone tower with lantern and gallery, attached to the seaward end of a 1-story stone keeper's house. Lighthouse painted white; the house has a red tile roof. The house is available for vacation rental. Light lists as late as 1920 say the light was shown from a window of the keeper's house, so the light tower must have been added later. Located on a small island off the northwest end of the much larger island of Murter. Accessible only by boat. Site open, tower closed.

Mulo 1873. Active; focal plane 23 m (75 ft); white flash every 5 s. 18 m (59 ft) octagonal stone tower with lantern and gallery, attached to a 2-story stone keeper's house. The lighthouse is unpainted stone; lantern painted white. This lighthouse helps guide ships around a substantial bulge in the coastline of the mainland. Located on a tiny island about 5 km (3 mi) southwest of Rogoznica. Accessible only by boat. Site open, tower closed.

Thanks Bill. I would love to go and visit these places. Then again a virtual visit is nearly as good.

No never. You don't get the atmosphere and feeling like you do, actually being there. It's like the MCG on Grand Final day.

This is the final in a set of 3 postage stamps featuring lighthouses issued by Croatia on 18 October 2011.

Image

Hrid Blitvenica, Lucietta Rock 1872. Active; focal plane 38 m (125 ft); two white flashes every 30 s. 21 m (69 ft) octagonal stone tower with lantern and gallery, attached to a 2-story stone keeper's house. The lighthouse is unpainted stone; lantern painted white. The lighthouse is automated, but in 2002 Plovput decided to return staff to the station for security and maintenance. This is one of several very isolated Croatian light stations in the Adriatic Sea; landing on the island is very difficult except in the best weather. Located on a tiny island about 7 km (4.5 mi) southwest of the larger island of Žirje and about 30 km (18 mi) southwest of Šibenik. Accessible only by boat. Site open, tower closed.

Posted this in the "Butterflies" thread, but it also features the Hanois lighthouse that was manned until 1996, first lit on December 8 1862.

Estonia featured the Vergi lighthouse on a postage stamp issued on 2 June 2011.

Image

Vergi 1936 (station established 1917). Active; focal plane 11 m (36 ft); flash every 3 s, white, red, or green depending on direction. 10 m (33 ft) round cylindrical concrete tower with lantern and gallery, painted white; lantern roof is black. The station was established with a small beacon, which was upgraded to a skeletal tower in 1924. The present lighthouse was restored and repainted sometime in recent years. NGA describes the light as being on an island, but apparently the island is now joined to the mainland. Located on the point of Cape Vergi, near the town of Vergi. Site open, tower closed.

Jamaica has released the first set of 4 in a new series of definitive postage stamps. They were issued on 4 July 2011. Here is the first one:

Image

Negril Point 1894. Active; focal plane 31 m (101 ft;) flash every 2 s, alternating red and white. 27 m (89 ft) round reinforced concrete tower with lantern and gallery; solar-powered lens. Tower and gallery painted white; lantern unpainted gray metal. Several 1-story frame keeper's houses are staffed. Built by a French company, this is one of the earliest concrete lighthouses. A well-known attraction of the Negril area. Located at South Negril Point, near the westernmost point of the island. Parking provided. Site open, tower open by appointment.

Here is the second lighthouse featured in the Jamaica set of definitive postage stamps issued on 4 July 2011.

Image

Morant Point 1841 (Alexander Gordon, designer; George Grove, contractor). Active; focal plane 35 m (115 ft); three white flashes every 20 s. 29 m (95 ft) round cast iron tower with lantern and gallery, painted with red and white horizontal bands. To protect against surf during hurricanes, a semicircular masonry wall has been built around the seaward side of the base of the lighthouse. This historic tower is the oldest lighthouse on the island and the first cast iron lighthouse built in the Western Hemisphere. A historical exhibit was planned for installation at the keeper's house. Located at Morant Point, the easternmost point of Jamaica. Accessible in dry weather by a new (though unpaved) road to the point. Site open; the tower is open by arrangement with the keeper.

We are driving around te NZ South Island this week and walked out to this Lighthouse today. On the remote West Coast.

Cape Foulwind lighthouse - the Cape named by Captain Cook on his first 1770 voyage. For obvious reasons.

Home to a NZ Fur Seal Colony, and near to the Pancake Rocks.

I thought readers of this thread might enjoy this story from Vietnam News.
http://vietnamnews.vnagency.com.vn/Sunday/Features/222073/shedding-light-on-stamp-collecting-passion.html

Shedding light on stamp collecting passion

Collector Nguyen Huy Khanh's passion is for stamps of lighthouses. Vuong Tam and Thu Huong report.
Philatelists usually get feverish with excitement when it comes to stamps depicting flowers, animals, or cultural monuments but HCM City's Nguyen Huy Khanh's particular passion is for lighthouses.

Such is his love for lighthouses, he now has a collection of 600 stamps, which he has amassed over the last 12 years, making him the possessor of the biggest lighthouse stamp collection in Viet Nam and possibly the world.

Khanh, who used to work as a technician for the Southern Viet Nam Maritime Safety Corporation, claims to have set foot on nearly 80 lighthouses in Viet Nam and dozens of others abroad.

"I collect lighthouse stamps because I just love the sea and the light that illuminates the way for ships in the dark," Khanh says.

Among his most prized possessions is a set of stamps depicting the Lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt, which for many centuries was the tallest man-made structure on Earth and has been named one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. To mariners of old, the lighthouse was a source of hope and reassurance, while to architects, it was an amazing feat of engineering. It is estimated to have stood between 120 and 140 metres high and could be seen from a distance of 50km.

Even though the lighthouse, which was completed in the third century BC, was destroyed during a severe earthquake in the 14th century, artists helped recreate the lighthouse's exact image from historical records.

Khanh now has four collections featuring this architectural marvel, the oldest of which was published in the 1980s in Egypt.

"These are among the most precious stamps I have acquired from domestic and foreign stamp collectors," Khanh says.

His other highly prized collection is of the Macquarie Lighthouse in Sydney. Built in 1818, the lighthouse is among the oldest in the world that are still working. Even the stamps themselves are very old.

Khanh also enthuses about his collection of 15 lighthouses published during the existence of the Soviet Union and East Berlin. "They are precious because these political systems no longer exist; therefore, their value has increased over time," he says.

However, despite the extent of his collection, there are only a few stamps of lighthouses in Viet Nam.

"There are nearly one hundred lighthouses in Viet Nam, but the post office has only published four stamps of the lighthouses in Long Chau, Cu Lao Xanh, Vung Tau and Can Gio. What a pity," Khanh says sadly.

This is perhaps why the stamps depicting lighthouses in Viet Nam are Khanh's favourites. "They have become so familiar to me, unlike the exotic ones."

In addition to stamps featuring images of lighthouses, Khanh also possesses many featuring My Son Holy Land, the old capital of Hue, Phong Nha-Ke Bang Cave and other world wonders.

Khanh's passion doesn't end with simply collecting stamps, he also insists on mailing letters and postcards to himself from exotic locations.

"I want my lighthouse stamps to have postmarks from places I have been to. That makes them more valuable in the eyes of other collectors," Khanh says.

Khanh also takes photos of the lighthouses he visits, and even collects old photographs and postcards. Afterwards, each photo is printed on hand-made envelopes, with information about the lighthouse printed on the back.

Furthermore, once he sticks a lighthouse stamp on an envelop, he asks the lighthouse keeper to sign the outside.

"One time, after designing an envelope with a print of Cu Lao Xanh Lighthouse [a 100-year-old lighthouse on Cu Lao Xanh Island off the coast of Quy Nhon Province] and sticking the lighthouse stamp on it, which was published in 1992, I went to the island to send it to myself," he says.

"I wanted to ask for the mark of the post office, unfortunately, the only officer working there had already gone home to take care of her new-born baby. Therefore, I had to starve myself waiting at the post office until she came back. Seeing such a person sending letters to himself and a very strange-looking envelope with a beautiful image of a lighthouse on it, she was very amazed."

The last envelope Khanh mailed to himself was on January 30. On the envelope was an image of Bai Canh Lighthouse. It was stamped with the mark of the post office on Con Dao Island in the south of Viet Nam.

It takes a lot of time and effort to collect stamps in this way, but I love doing it, Khanh says.

"I have had a strong attachment to lighthouses for many years. Now that I have retired, these stamps are such a vivid diary of my career and life."

Khanh says he recently raised the idea of publishing more lighthouse stamps in Viet Nam with the Ha Noi Stamp Company. Luckily, the company's director was enthusiastic about the idea and plans to publish a new lighthouse stamp collection in early 2013.

As for the future, Khanh next plans to visit Busan Harbour. And then of course there is his wife, "the light of his life" (no pun intended), and his children who have so far expressed no desire to follow in their father's footsteps. — VNS

Here is the third lighthouse featured in the Jamaica set of definitive postage stamps issued on 4 July 2011.

Image

Lover's Leap Date unknown. Active; focal plane 530 m (1739 ft); white flash every 10 s. 30.5 m (100 ft) round cylindrical steel (?) tower with lantern and octagonal gallery. Tower painted with red and white horizontal bands; lantern white, gallery red. This is the highest lighthouse in the Western Hemisphere. JNHT says this is also the newest Jamaican lighthouses, evidently built after Jamaica became independent (1962). The area has been developed as a tourist attraction, with a restaurant and observation deck near the lighthouse. Located 32 km (20 mi) south of Mandeville at the top of a spectacular vertical cliff. Now for something just a little bit different.

Sweden issued this minisheet on 21 March 2012:

Maintenance and surveillance for a safer life at sea

Coastline surveillance by air and maintenance of the lighthouses along the fairways and at open sea are the motifs of the stamps in the Life at the Coast minisheet. This is the second issue of The North by the Sea, the current theme in the popular Top of the World Stamps series.

Here is the usual edited description of the lighthouse structure taken from http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/lighthouse/swe2.htm.

Pater Noster (Hamneskär) 1868 (Nils Gustaf von Heidenstam). Reactivated (inactive 1977-2007); focal plane unknown; one long white flash every 15 s. 32 m (105 ft) pyramidal cast iron skeletal tower with lantern, gallery, and central cylinder. Lighthouse painted red. 1-1/2 story wood keeper's house and other light station buildings, also painted red. The original 1st order Fresnel lens is on display at the Bohusläns Museum in Uddevalla. Hamneskär is a skerry in the Skagerrak about 7 km (4.5 mi) west of Marstrand. Deactivated in favor of the new Hätteberget Fyr in 1977, the historic lighthouse was in poor condition by the 1990s. A preservation group, Pater Nosters Vänner, was formed, and the Bohusläns Museum agreed to manage the restoration effiort. Funds for restoration were secured and the lighthouse was dismantled and transported to Uddevalla. In Uddevalla it was discovered that the tower was in much worse shape than had been thought, and the funds available were insufficient for the repairs needed. Several years were needed to organize a larger effort. In 2004, a restoration agreement was signed between local and state agencies, the museum, and the firm of Pharmadule Emtunga. In 2006-07 the lighthouse was restored and reassembled in Uddevalla, then placed on a barge for its return to Hamneskär. Accessible only by boat. Site open, tower closed.

The next two photos show the light on its way back to its rightful location and a detail of the structure.

Sri Lanka featured lighthouses on a set of 4 postage stamps issued on 15 September 2010. They came out at the National Stamp Fair Colombo 2010. Here is the first of them.

Image

Little Basses Reef 1878. Active; focal plane 34 m (112 ft); two very quick white flashes every 10 s. 37 m (121 ft) round granite tower with lantern and double gallery, painted white with a black horizontal band. PTI helped refurbish both lighthouses in 1998-99. In December 2004 the two lighthouses withstood the force of the tsunami with only modest damage; the English lighthouse agency Trinity House agreed to repair them and the light was back in service in late 2005. The lighthouse was designed by James Douglass and built by William Douglass. Note: "basses" is a corruption of the Portuguese word baixio, meaning a shoal. Located about 10 km (6 mi) offshore from Yala and 16 km (10 mi) south of Kumana. Accessible only by boat.

Great Basses Reef 1873. Active; focal plane 34 m (112 ft); white flash every 15 s. 37 m (121 ft) round granite tower with lantern and double gallery, painted white. This lighthouse was designed by Alexander Gordon and Sir James Douglass. Like Little Basses Reef Light, it withstood the force of the tsunami with only modest damage; the English lighthouse agency Trinity House agreed to repair it and the light was back in service by 2007. The two Basses lighthouses are among the most famous offshore lighthouses of Asia. Located about 13 km (8 mi) offshore and 16 km (10 mi) east of Kirinda. Accessible only by boat.

Sri Lanka featured lighthouses on a set of 4 postage stamps issued on 15 September 2010. They came out at the National Stamp Fair Colombo 2010. Here is the last one.

Galle (Pointe de Galle) 1939 (station established 1848). Active; focal plane 28 m (92 ft); two white flashes every 15 s. 26.5 m (87 ft) round cast iron tower with lantern and gallery, painted white; the base of the lantern is painted red. This is Sri Lanka's oldest light station. The British Library has a photo of the original lighthouse, which was destroyed by fire in 1936. The light station is within the walls of the ancient Galle Fort, a UNESCO world heritage site and well known tourist attraction, making this the country's most often visited lighthouse. Located at the end of a peninsula sheltering the harbor of Galle, at the southwestern corner of Sri Lanka. Site open, tower closed.

Now you have inspired me. Those two are located on shoals and the shipping lane in south-east Sri Lanka passes between the coast and these shoals.

The map show only 5 structures in the south but the light at Hambantota no longer operates.

This one was taken because of the Osprey perched on the rail near the top.

I found this site while looking for information on Charters Towers. It is well worth a visit for those interested in Australian lighthouses.

I was delighted to see this image posted by figmente on the A dip in the blue ocean - sea life images thread. The postage stamp was issued by Uruguay in 1954 as part of a set of 17 definitives. The same image was on a second denomination.

Image

Isla de Lobos (2) 1906 (station established 1858). Active; focal plane 66 m (217 ft); white flash every 5 s; the tower also carries a continuous red light at a focal plane of 53 m (174 ft). 59 m (194 ft) round tapered concrete tower with lantern and gallery, mounted on a round stone base. Lighthouse painted white; base unpainted; lantern and watch room painted with red and white vertical stripes. The light station is staffed. Uruguay's tallest lighthouse, this is also one of the tallest concrete lighthouses in the world. The 1858 lighthouse was short-lived: sealers protested that it scared away the animals, so the light was moved to Punta del Este in 1860. The 1906 tower was designed by Victor Benavídez and built by José María Claret. Located on a small (36 ha, 90 acre) island about 13 km (8 mi) southeast of Punta del Este. Accessible only by boat. Site and tower closed (the island is a wildlife sanctuary protecting a huge colony of seals).

In February 2012 I posted a postage stamp from Estonia showing the Vergi lighthouse. I now find that Estonia has issued a number of these stamps so here is the one for Hara issued on 24 September 2009.

Image

Hara 1909. Inactive since the late 1980s, but still listed as a daybeacon (surrounding trees must limit its usefulness). Skeletal tower with lantern and gallery; lantern painted white with a red roof. Endangered. The tower was increased in height in 1954. Located on an island off the southeastern base of the Juminda peninsula. Accessible only by boat. Site status unknown.
