I am glad you liked them - pity the clerk didn't cancel them, she had trouble adding up the values of those stamps so I am not suprised the simple action of cancelling the stamps was a struggle too!

I really love some of our latest high value designs and love sending stamps like that on cover overseas.

Funny fact - you got that parcel quicker than I can send a parcel from PErth to the East Coast of Australia!

Enjoy,

Rob

Norm .. I made the comment that whilst a lot of CTO full gum with undated cancels exist of these (I have several 100 here) I do not think I have ever seen one genuine postally used on parcel piece! 8)

Point of advice when mailing letters: write "Please Do Not Bend -- Photos Inside" not "Philatelic Material", the latter screams "valuable" (at least to those who know what the word 'philatelic' means.

I also often add my company's name (together with my personal PO Box) as a return address, in the hope that it makes the "interesting" cover (colourful envelope, franking of commems) look more "ordinary".

If I put a customs label on, then it goes as 'Philatelic Material' - it won't get stolen, but it might get caught for import duty though.

Hrrumph! A lot of picking to do there! Yes they have cds, but some are bent and they are on either a jiffy bag or bubble-envelope which means every one will have a degree of creasing. Spectacular, colourful, but I can't help thinking a few higher value, country or Machin definitives, stuck to a piece of paper, cancelled, and then enclosed in a plastic pouch for mailing would have brought some more collectable stamps to you.

Hey Norvic, be nice. I would be absolutely delighted to recieve something like that... creased or not :P Mind you, I'd probably be on my Postmasters hate list  . He's been rather reluctant to hand over some items I've been recieving in the last few weeks

It can be a problem when he's a collector...and knows I am too!

He has one advantage! He always asks the other customers for the stamps if they don't want them  and usually gets them too!!!

I was nice :o I said they were spectacular and colourful with cds :D Then I said most would be creased. There's a nice full block of 10 Coastlines there. If the creases iron out alright there will be lot of good additions to any collection.

Received this the other day. Pity the box was so heavy as it damaged some of the stamps by being kicked around on the bottom of the truck or whatever!
But still some nice stamps that may be rescued. Need to put these people on to Glen...re-packaging to recieve nice undamaged stamps!

Anyway, I'm delighted with them all and was so suprised that a company actually uses stamps any more!

He has one advantage! He always asks the other customers for the stamps if they don't want them  and usually gets them too!!!

The block of 10 Coastlines was mostly OK, I think a couple were ragged and torn...the Tudor monarchs strip was put on the edge of the envelope and those were mangled to death.

It was a bubble padded envelope filled with literature, so not bumped around, plus some of the stamps weren't stuck down fully--some loose corners came up and were creased. I put the whole lot in for soaking, and tossed the damaged when they came out of the water. Most of my incoming stamps go in a 'kiloware' box and when I motivate myself, I do some soaking, giving a few away to youngsters or putting in a stockbook to eventually offer as a "starter collection".

Anne, I remember you said on a thread you live in a small town...a small-town postmaster probably isn't too harried, and will have math skills, unlike the half-wit teenagers one often gets at a franchised counter in a supermarket, so they shouldn't complain if they have to take a mo' to add up all the stamps on your envelope.

If the postmaster is a collector, ah, that might be a dilemna...you might start seeing eBay purchases never arrive. :o I worked at a PO p/t in uni, and would always ask customers for the stamps when they were picking up parcels. The girl I worked with started doing the same; she never caught the collecting bug, she was just attracted to the thought of being able to sell them on.

Hi aethelwulf, was she on-selling to you? Bit cheeky!

Our little town has a pop. of about 400 people...not very big at all!

I think it a very common thing nowadays for the younger ones not to be able to add up!
It annoys me so much when they can't even add up $3.10 x 2 without a calculator! I have to walk away!

I don't use a calculator...just a bit of paper and a pen...unless it's only a few items, then I add it up in my head! And I can generally add up quicker than they can with the calculator!!!

I have to try very hard not to chuckle when I get something in the mail with lots of nice stamps on it! The postmaster just looks forlornly at the item gives a big sigh and then slowly hands it over!

It always makes my day!

Some of the staff at the PO local to my office have trouble adding up the most common values, like multiples of the current rate ($0.60c) etc.

Its very sad.

It is sad Robert1, trouble is kids are usually given a calculator so early in school...and after just using that for a while...they forget how to do any maths! :(

I always add up the postage (like hutch's) and write it where the USPS label will go. Now whether the clerk believes you, that's another story. But it's there if you peel the label back.

I am accumulating discount postage MUCH faster than I can use it, very sad, McDonald's won't take 32c stamps, no matter how much gum they have.

After 5 years here in HK, with visits to the post office a couple times a week, it seems 100/100 times the clerk will use a calculator for absolutely bloody every item. If postage is $18.30, and I've licked on a $5 stamp already, do you think they'll do the calculation in their head how much needs to be added? Bureaucracy.

Stamp sets always come in the same values--$1.40, 2.40, 3.00, 5.00. Yet whenever I put a M/S on an envelope, out comes the calculator, and they punch in the values 1 by 1. Well, if they want to dither around and build up a queue of customers behind me, so be it.

Maths and students these days:
Quote:
THE HISTORY OF MATH

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. In the 1950s: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

2. In the 1960s: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. In the 1970s: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. In the 1980s: A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. In the 1990s: A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok.)

6. In the 2000s: If you have special needs or just feel you need assistance because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, childhood memories, criminal background, then don't answer and the correct answer will be provided for you. There are no wrong answers.

I am a product of the school system where the calculator was a "must have" (last 20 yeasrs or so) but specifically made sure I could count in my head and at worst use the good old pen and paper. It amazes me how many retail staff can not add these days, especially postal staff. Generally in Australia, every rate is a multiple of the base letter rate, its not har to count off multiples of 60c.

None the less, back to the topic at hand, I apologise for the not so good picture quality, but some recent franking from Glen - this was all on one HEAVY package across the country to Perth!

Image

Thanks Glen, some lovely items and more Christmas Island!

Perhaps one for the 'stupid questions' thread as it doesn't seem to bother people who receive them, but doesn't anyone find it a bit of a cheat how Glen's lovely frankings are cancelled and sealed under plastic without being stuck on? Yes it keeps them in pristine condition but they then resemble CTO stamps with full gum, which I thought were frowned upon? To me a used example on cover or tied on piece would seem more satisfying?

CTO seem to be popular in Australia, although not with me.

When I get Glen frankings that are not in my collecting area, I onsell them with an explanation of how they were used ... never had any trouble finding takers.

Works OK for me.

CTO stamps are attractive and sought after by many collectors.

Some people don't like CTO's, that's fine. There are plenty of stamps I don't like which I choose to not collect.

Glen's CTO frankings have been known to sell for over face, that shows there IS demand for modern CTO full gum material.

If you scroll back a few pages to here you will see how I achieve the same thing here in the UK. I do put them on paper, but usually stick only one edge and then slip the bunch of papers into the plastic pouch. Customers can also soak off the gum.

At least mine look like postally used, whereas Glen's do look like CTO. But then he has a lot more to post than I do. Most of my regular mail just gets recent stamps on the packet these days, but often still with a Horizon label so that they get the CDS.

Fair enough - not trying to knock it and it is infinitely better than a grab bag of 1970s wallpaper! I post quite a few books and CDs etc that I sell on Amazon and try to use modern stamps where I can, usually with some old discount postage to make up the rates.

Recently I've used some whole jubilee miniature sheets on airmail packets - in period and commercial and no doubt will end up in a bin as the recipients are unlikely to be collectors!

You could always enclose an SAE and ask if they would send them back - though best to contact them beforehand, the price of SAEs now.

I do this (enclose a SSAE) and I find that it works around 50% of the time - worth doing though in my opinion.

On days like this I love the postie!

I see you got some of the latest offerings from Royal Mail - which of the Jubilee issue did you get?

Oh Norvic! Raining on the picnic! Are you bucking for entrance into the GOMC? If your subjects are happy, why make them unhappy?

Hi Ian,

At the risk of getting belted with brickbats, they contained the Union Flag stamp (post and go) and the FDC of same. I tried for three days solid to get through on the phone to RM but every time I chose option 2 (top up your account or place an order) I got a firm voice telling me that this option was currently unavailable, after which the phone line was cut off.

I reasoned therefore that lots of other people would be in the same boat and that there may be a degree of scarcity about this issue, not least of which because it seemed to 'sneak out' in between the other RM outpourings and wasn't included in standing orders.

I therefore went online two days after the supposed 'final' date and ordered. The system accepted the order and they have duly delivered which I hadn't expected, I thought I'd get a polite 'you were too late' email.

There is of course a debate as to the validity of so many stamps being issued in one year and whether RM takes collectors seriously or treats them as a cash cow , but I'm not going there :D :D

...Your reply to to JohnEBoy...but you were obviously referring to what was INSIDE the received envelopes, not the franking to mail them. I initially understood your wry humor to be at work. No offense intended Ian :D

No problem - and I'm sorry for my reaction, yours just seemed to have no relevance, and I scrolled back to find out if it was a reply to a previous posting of mine.

Yes, I recognised the mailing envelopes, and of course the timing as many people have had some of their DJ order this week. The rest is still awaited.

More of a large envelope than a parcel but worth showing.

Wife and her sister have gotten into beading ordered some supplies from on line they showed up in this. I must say though I do not collect stamps of China some one in China appears to have taken some effort in sending this. Not sure if these are recent issue common stamps or what.

This is one envelope I received today, with 03 India commemoratives and 01 definitive. The definitive ones were issued in 2010.

Received a few covers over the last couple of weeks. Here's one from England. Thanks Gavin! Love those "Twits" stamps.

Here's another. I think the Dandenong PO must really like using that hand canceller. :)

I recently bought the British Postal Rates book advertised here by "King Tut" - posted on Friday 13th, arrived Thursday 19th with a selection of stamps much admired by the people in the sorting office, even more so when I turned it over for the Olympic sheets on the back!

I do like this one!
