People like being able to personalise their user handle with a photo of some kind, generally called an Avatar on Bulletin Boards.

We ask that **ALL** members choose some kind of avatar. We don't care if it is a stamp photo, your photo, your Mum's photo, of George Bush's photo or an animated Mickey Mouse .,,,,. just please choose SOMETHING!

To add one go into your account via the "MY PROFILE" tab on top each page, and add an avatar url link into the "Link to off-site Avatar" box -

There are a million free avatars out there to pick from - just one good site I noticed was: http://avatars.jurko.net/2/

To use one of theirs, simply right click on the one you like, and then left click on properties. Cut and paste the URL of the avatar (use Ctrl + C keys) and simply paste that in to the "Link to off-site Avatar" box and then press "SUBMIT".

We STRONGLY suggest you add SOME kind of avatar .. all other members have one after all!

Go to "MY PROFILE" button at top of any page.

The fastest way to get something temporary to kick off with is go to google and type a simple thing like "USA stamps" or "Australian Stamps" (if you want a US or oz based avatar!)

Then click "IMAGES" along top bar. You'll see 100s of stamp pix that are already avatar size small. PERFECT FOR OUR USE!!

Just single RIGHT click on one thumbnail you like and know you'll be allowed to use, and then left click "properties" in the box you now see, and then copy the Address(URL) it shows (highlight it with your cursor, then use CTRL and C keys together to do this copy.)

It will look petty long and must end in jpg .. so watch for that, as it will ALWAYS take up 3 or 4 lines in the Properties box so make SURE to select it all down to the .jpg wording.

Paste all that into box 3 of your avatar part of your profile using CTRL and V keys together, press "SUBMIT" and you are set!

If you get stuck, ask one of our 15 or so Volunteer Moderators for a helping hand - whomever is on the board at that time!

OR, if you want to take a stamp or cover from your own images on your computer, or off another stamp image you see on the web, you can EASILY make that image your avatar - - full details are here:

viewtopic.php?t=284

And remember if you go to "PROFILE" and change **ANYTHING** in there, whether an avatar or new email, or just your time code settings etc, you MUST also answer the ID question in RED before hitting submit.

Forget to do that and you will get a message saying "you have not answered the security question".

Glen

The link above is incredibly useful for all the basics of how to do things here, and how all the neat software features work!

It covers all these areas in detail, all in easy to follow layman language. :D

What is BBCode?

How to create bold, italic and underlined text
How to change the text colour or size
Can I combine formatting tags?
Quoting and outputting fixed-width text
Quoting text in replies
Outputting code or fixed width data

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I need to fight with my website ISP, especially as I have been paying for those upgrades for years.

Have been trying to load my own avatar from a file on my computer.

File size is 9.3kb (gif) and pixel size 115x82, but keep getting the following error below when submitting.

No major problem, I can easily link to an avatar off site, but thought it might be nice to use one of my own.

Anyway for the admin the following is the error messages. If you know of a work around, please let me know, otherwise I will link to one off site some time soon

Regard
Jeff G

gunna .. as clearly outlined in post 1 of this thread it is not going to work unless you choose the 3rd option .. an offsite avatar .. or start a free account with www.photobucket.com - try that also using option 3 .. works for everyone else!

Hi Glen, sorry to bother you but I've been trying to link up this avatar at to my profile but seem to be failing miserably.

I have followed the instructions on the page, and been sure to delete failed attempts and answer the question but with no success.

Do you have any suggestions to rectify this???

Regards
Craig

Go to the "profile" at the top of the page rather than the one under your postings and edit from it.

Hi all,

I am a big stamp fan but not a computer wizard.

I have a total of 13 Sperati stamps which were included with the books, parts 1-3, 1955, from the British Philatelic Association.

It is actually part 4 of this collection.

My name is Peter and I am pleased to join this website. I live in Bournemouth and have been a collector of Great Britain and the British Commonwealth since the mid 1960's. I have built up what I believe to be a great collection and these days I am mainly looking for rare stamps in fine condition.

Hi, I'm Graeme.
I have been a collector for too many years. My profession is that of an accountant and stamps keep me sane. My main collection covers Aust. GB, Canada and PNG but lately I have covered a wider range to simply enjoy collecting.
Like most of us, I am always looking for the unusual or rare and at times I find something I know little or nothing about so hopefully others can help.

nicky if you are lucky you will get an avatar from the Stampboards avatar fairy (although she is on holidays at the moment) so unless you want your own, just wait and the fairy will give you one.

While you are waiting, why don't you go to the below link and introduce yourself

Hello board,

I've been trying to upload a new avatar and have followed the size specified, but for some reason...it just doesn't want to go thru. Anyone know how to do it?
I did it before and it was simple, but for some reason it's giving me problems.

If all else fails, send the jpeg to me and I can play around with the sizing and reload.

The only time I have problems is if the image is a very long or tall one- the squarish ones (160 or less) usually load first time.

Another issue might be that you are taking the wrong code from Photobucket- need to be the one labelled 'direct link'.

Cheers

If anyone still has problems let me know on this thread.

The usual error is clicking the wrong link in Photobucket. For an avatar you must select the second item from the drop down list.

Just saw MargoZ's post will let mine go anyway.

Where most go wrong is they try to load their usual 800 x 600 image as an avatar. TOO BIG.

You need FIRST to change your setting to be 160 x 120 max (option 2) on the grid below and then do it.

But when it loads OK change it BACK to 800 option red circled, or all your ongoing pix will be tiny!

OK, I've followed the instructions as best I can, (I'm old remember), and I can't for the life of me find a spot in my profile that says anything about how to load an Avatar. (So sometimes there ARE dumb questions, just make sure the answer isn't just as dumb - lol)

Thank you,

I don't know what I was doing wrong, but all I was getting was:

"The Rules" * FAQ * Search * Members
So I logged off, then logged on again, & there was the user control panel. So I'll have another go at this. Thanks everyone for your patience & help.

Cheers

There are loads of stamp avatars which are allocated by the hard working avatar fairy. If you don't come up with one of your own the fairy will give you one :D

I'm definitely a newbie to bulletin boards. I have tried to read the rules for attaching an avatar to my profile but have been frustrated at every attempt.

I have chosen a photo of a stamp, saved it as a jpeg, uploaded it to PhotoBucket, made sure it (a horizontal stamp) was no wider than 160 pixels, copied the URL under the picture in the box marked "IMG Code" and tried to place it in my profile>edit avatar.

I constantly get "The URL you specified is invalid." What gives?

Don

That's somewhere where the IMG code is not used - you have to enter the image address ie http://****photobucket***/***/myavatar.jpg

I don't know whether Glen fixed this when I posted the image or whether Ian gave me good advice but it seems to work. Thank you all.
