Picked up a lot of British Guiana for a few euros it had a couple from this set with the overprints I needed. This one was the only non overprinted one present and I had it or so I thought. It turns out to be watermark inverted and reversed used no value in S.G. given but the mint one is 375.00 pounds. So this one is 217 y. Any way hope i am looking at this right.

Tried altering contrast to show in this scan.

Mixed decimal and pre-decimal franking.

Something I didn't expect to find at a reasonable price -- a first day GB private postcard:

Image

Image

When postcards were originally introduced in the UK on 1st October 1870, only postal stationery cards were valid (originally the official ones only, stamped to order with an embossed ½d die from 1872) The only way you could use a ½d adhesive stamp to pay the postcard rate was for redirection. From 1st September 1894, however, private cards with adhesive stamps could be used, which eventually led to the picture postcard craze of the early 20th century.

Not cheap exactly, but the prices (including premium) of the five similar items I managed to locate in the historic auction databases of a couple of leading GB auctioneers ranged from about 6-11 times the cost of this one on eBay, so I'm not complaining!

I picked this up on Ebay for $14 as far as I know it is only the 2nd copy known.
We also found the 1st copy that Lance Skinner reported in ACCC of NSW March 2010 he wrote = without
doubt a previously unrecorded imprint from plate 3.

The ACSC only lists this in brown printings.

Weird Al do mine fall into the rare category or are these more common than we think? I picked these up on ebay in 2007 for $12.

PS: Oh I missed the "Brown Printings" comment.....sigh.

Also pick this up from ebay a little while ago for about $25

Tx ddaann, it probably has something to do with description Geermany instead of Germany  and my misspelling while combing trough ebay. So double error lead to head-shot 8)

Yes. My brother collects American Indian baskets and pottery. He purposely searches for mis-spellings like Souix and mis-identified as "Mexican"

Mis-spellings are a great way to pick up items on the cheap. I've had some luck that way before. Another is trolling through the "sellers other items" list--sometimes they don't mention an aspect of the cover, such as that its a mourning cover or registered.

Potentially, quite a lot in there. You need to look at watermarks and colours.

It may be a bargain if you need the majority for your collection.

Here is a strange thing I do to amuse myself when I buy a mixed lot like this. First (and be honest :) ) set aside all the really damaged ones (you can get cancels from them later).
Then go through the remainder and find the ones you need to add to your collection. If the catalog total of what you have added is 3x what you paid, then you have a bargain. The rest of the sound ones are a bonus, and you can use them for trading.

The damaged ones can be looked at for cancels if there is a really good one, otherwise they should be destroyed.
I don't wish to get on a soapbox, but I would hope all collectors followed that practice, and not pass damaged stamps on to others.

P/S- I would probably have bought it myself anyway, even though I think I have most of them. For $11 there is always a chance of a perf or watermark variety in there somewhere  .

Good luck & have fun,
pat

Jim,
That is a very nice stamp for $1.56. My Michel Specialized is a bit out of date, but why €800.00? Just curious.
Thanks & best to you,

Taking a random stab at an answer, it looks like the 1's in the fractions LL and LR aren't the same.

Was talking to a dealer today, he said he bought a huge Swedish collection off ebay, 3 whole volumes covering pretty much almost the whole of the 20th century. Said he paid about $70... and it was listed under "furniture" Lucky duck!

Grabbed them already, few of this and some other things are destined to sales part of stampboards, with some other nice things as soon as I get some time to scan few lots for posting here. Made a few nice purchases recently and lot of things I don't really need

I seem to remember those were engraved by Czesław Słania because of his own interest in the subject, is that right? Not sure where he got them printed though. :)

As I have mentioned multiple times, I'm new to this. I inherited a collection my grandfather found in Germany during WWII and I only recently, as in only within the last month or less, started going through it. Surprisingly enough I enjoyed sorting it and looking them up in Scott so much, I decided to add some to the collection, if for no other reason than to have more to investigate as I have some extra free time right now.

Anyway, I bought exactly 1,478 19th & early 20th century stamps from around the world for around $60 recently. Here are a few that I pulled from that batch to scan to present. I know just for these $60 is way too much, but still, there were 1,469 other stamps in the lot.

About the roos -I've loved the "roos" that I have seen other people post online, and was thrilled that I found a couple. There seem to be a lot of different kinds, released in different years, and I have also heard about tons of fakes and also reissues that came out later on in the 1970s, so I'm unsure just what I have here. From what I can tell they are likely only worth a buck or so if even that, but regardless, I think they're cool.

The top 15c stamp looks like a good copy of Canada 29 or 30, with good centering, good perfs and a reasonable cancel. FU copies are catalogued at about $25 and VF are much more. Retail price is 40-50% of catalog. But if there are tears, thins or stains it would have almost no value.

This one was 60p - plus £1 p&p:

Partially-correctly described as "Dresden OPD cover".

It's a Saxony Black - obliterated Hitler Head, immediate post-war (typically used June - August 1945).

Value? Maybe €40-50 on a good day.

Normal Kangaroos (i.e, those that are not puntured OS) are not generally forged. Scarcer values (mainly the high face values) are found reperforated (the appearance is improved by faking one or more rows of perforations, especially where the original had short or damaged perfs), which is why you need to buy from a reputable source.

However, unless you are considering spending serious money on the 1/- to £2 values, you are pretty safe. Just watch the condition.

Send me an email via teh board and I will send you a few more 'Roos to expand your collection. :)

A while back I bought this lot off eBay for GBP 14

500g off-paper - it was about 70% commonwealth, mostly from 1970s, 25% Poland (can't win'em all) and 5% other.
Sadly only about 10 China Cultural Revolution period commems total (2 visible in pic).
But the first handful I picked out had Singapore 1955 set Mint to 50 cent, lots of Singapore HV comms (CV up to GBP 19), and a bunch of Hong Kong 1970s commems.

Oddly it was from a private seller, (non-stamp dealer)...

Just picked up this 2d substituted cliche which I spotted in a bundle of roos and KGV heads on Ebay. Was a bit expensive at $A197 but should recoup most of the cost from the rest of the bundle. Now the proud owner of two of these.

Picked this little bargain up from E-Bay 4 weeks ago.

Imprint block of 6 SG117 Deep Carmine Air plane O/P's with Tail Flaw.

Charles Leski sold simular block in Feb 2006 for $2800.

Got to love E-Bay regardless of all the kicks in the guts it gets on this board, there are still bargain's to be had.

Price purchased for $145.00 AUD

No, funnily enough it was advertised as block of 6 Air plane O/P and listed at a start price of $0.99.

The kind seller had a phone number so I gave him a call and did the deal to delist it.

Had to be quick as it would not have taken to many collectors long to pick up on the tail flaw and colour.

Cheers Robbo

I assume the phone call didn't mention the flaw either ? Not that there's anything wrong with that. What's the normal imprint block of 6 retail price ?

Depending on condition around $150.00 AUD for the Harrison printing.

Bought it from ebay for 5.20 pounds including postage

Image

1½d KGV green, BW 88(12)l cracked electro. Better still the paper looks like very coarse mesh paper although I won't say for sure without a certificate.

Cheers

Sometime ago this one caught my eye on eBay:
Image

Bhor State (a Princely State of India), 13 x One Anna Fiscal on what looks like a cut-out from some official ledger (There are 6 more stamps on the reverse).
Always good to see Revenue Stamps in their natural habitat, so put in a bid, and got it for 19€ including P&P.

One of the 13 had a tear down the top (the bottom stamp on the scan) which wasn't mentioned in the description, so should have protested.
But then found one of them to be of the "Inverted Head" variety, which K&M catalogues at us$1500,- !
The real marketprice is a bit more down to earth : 50-100 €, but still a nice return on my investment.

Image

Unless ofcourse it's a forgery (These "Inverted Heads" are/were massively forged), but then if it is it's quite an elaborate one, and certainly worth €19

And a bit of an odd-one-out I think, on this stamp-related board:

A letter from the "Corsini Correspondence". Got it on-line from Corinphila, who dó hold real auctions, with real people attending, but this purchase was done entirely online.

From Middelburg (The Netherlands) to Bartolomeo Corsini in London ("Aux [Messrs] Bartolomini Corsini [& Co] Merchants a Londres" is what I can deduce and reduce from those scribbles), dated 4th october 1593.
And, according to the description, marked "Request", whatever that meant in those days. Maybe some very early form of "Registered"?

Not a "bargain" per se at € 130,- + auction-costs, but it turns out one of my ancestors is mentioned in that same letter, which makes it priceless really (For me at least) !

As a piece of postal history from 1593, I think it is a bargin. :D

As someone who works on my own genealogy I agree with you that having a family member mentioned, it is indeed priceless. :D

If the £1 Robes is undamaged then you have recovered the cost, and then some, in that one stamp.

Even if the Robes had a .38 slug through the center of it, you did OK for $11. :D
But it would be nice if it was also in fair shape.

Here's hoping!

I picked these up for $18us. The seller only showed 3 of the covers, but when I received it there were 5.
