I just received an email from paypal about a transaction I supposedly made (which I had not) with a link to click on if I thought there had been a mistake.
I have just sent a copy to paypal .For the good that will do.
Thought I had better warn you all to be aware of this

Brian

There's a lot of this about on Ebay/paypal at the moment.

You've done EXACTLY the right thing. The ONLY way to stop it, long term, is to forward EVERY one you get to Ebay/Paypal.

It may seem to do no good, and you will only get a standard-worded response and never see the follow-up but eventually the volume of these reports will ensure action is taken

If nobody acts, that's how criminals prosper, but if all honest folk take a little time to report these attempted crimes, the internet (and the world) will be a better place.

How does it take for Paypal to add a refund to my bank account? I bought something on ebay and the person cannot ship it to arrive by Christmas so she refunded my money back through paypal. The refund shows up in my paypal transactions but it doesn't show up online in my bank account. Shouldn't this be a instant transaction because when you pay for something on Paypal it shows up right away on your account.

Isn't that because Paypal will refund the money into your paypal account and not your bank account?

You need to transfer money out of paypal and into you bank account. Which is only a good idea when it's a decent amount and I think they have a minimum anyway.

The other thing is just wait until you buy something else and pay for it with paypal funds.

PS Welcome to Stampboards! :D

Just an update (and my 5,000 post!)

I have recieved another email from "Paypal" that is a phishing scam and I am sick of these occuring especially when it seems to me that Paypal DOES NOTHING about it.

Why do I say this? Because the sender is using "Paypall.com" (an extra "l" in the name). Solution for Paypal? Get that .com taken down and banned for goodness sake.

Every email I send to paypal simply comes back with a polite but meaningless "thank you for bringing it to our attention, blah, blah..." But nothing ever actually happens and no resolution is ever sent to me with what they did. So I don't waste my keystrokes anymore and just delete and ban the senders address. Which is, I guess, just what paypal wants us to do for them and not bother them.

I'm far more thankful to Mr Norton as these get put straight into my junk folder, but I still like to keep an eye on it.

What I don't like is that the dodgy email has used my real name to get to me. How did they find that out?

Send them to "spoof(at)ebay.com" or "spoof(at)paypal.com". You get a form answer because it may another pfisher trying to figure it out. The reason that they don't always go away is that they or the servers are located in where enforcement is hard.

Forward them anyway.
That their practice does not include notifying you of their successes and failures in stopping or nabbing the phishers does not eliminate the sense in forwarding them.

Looks like another one is doing the rounds.

This landed in my in box this morning. I didn't buy the painting and there is no activity in my paypal account. Importantly it is not addressed to me (by name). Take note of one of the links; the first b isn't included as part of the link.

Thanks for that tip-off. I've had a few transactions through pp lately, and although I do check, this is one more for me (and everyone else) to keep an eye on. :? :?

There is another new one doing the rounds, getting even better with how "real" it looks.

This time they are saying that your credit card has been removed off the account and "if you believe this is an error", you need to click the link.

This also is a dangerous phishing scam.

The sender (to me anyway) was from bnjwkd@yahoo.com.
I haven't changed the coding as I don't care how may phishing scams the robots pick up here and send back to him!

I know there are lots of indicators that this is a scam and many are savy about these things, however some can still be caught out - so please take care and don't get caught.

Allanswood.
I have never made a transaction using paypal, yet for a month or two a while back I was receiving the same notice that you have, and from the same source by the looks of it. So I went along and seen a friend that works for Telecom.

Her advice was to ignore and delete, then in came the threat to credit etc. etc. Her advice was the same. If you answer you confirm the email is live, and if you ignore and delete. The senders and their computer will eventually believe the email address is...dead!

I followed her advice and it soon stopped. Now I never bother to open an email unless I know the sender.

Huanga.

Huanga, I am well aware of what to do.
I didn't open the email, I never respond to them and the email when first noted was in my junk mail folder thanks to Norton, which also partially blocks the contents.

If you ever do "answer" these emails then you invite all the trouble they will contain!

The sending computers and their software will never think that your email is a "dead" email though - they are usually programmed to email every address they can, even invented ones that don't exist. It's the same a telemarketers who just ring every phone number real or not.

If you just delete it then good and highly recommended, but don't ever think that they will go away if they think your email doesn't exist.
:D

You do realise, I suppose, that the email address used to send the phishing scam was almost certainly hijacked and belongs to an innocent party? It might make you feel better to let him/her be the subject of new scams, but I am sure he/she probably wouldn't agree.

Maybe we should consider the actual context before subjecting others to retribution, unless there is compelling evidence of course!

Well if the account was hyjacked, how long do you think the innocent party will continue using it? Or if it is hyjacked and the password changed then they can't use it any longer anyway.

PS- Just got another of the exact same scam email from another sender.

This time from "services@intrpaypal.com.au"

The innocent party may not even know. If they have a trojan on their PC they may be totally oblivious and not even know emails are being sent.

The latest email address looks much more like a fraudulently created address.

I have emailed the yahoo one to warn them.

edit: I thought it might... the email bounced straight back with a "could not be delivered".

This week's head up!

Here is what appears to be yet another one, this time a "policy update" to respond to.
The only problem is that I have now been sent 6 of them in one week.
BUT they are looking a lot more convincing until you take a closer look at the address and the link details.

Image

Notice that the paypal.com at the top of the email is not paypal's proper address.
Also the embedded link in the paragraph does not take you to payapl. So don't click on any of them.

The link is to the weird address below. Don't click it!
https:// email-edg. paypal.com/r/ PN3Z0RL/478Y/0O9EUT/YEJE/OR7TX/Y6/h

My protection is that I do NOT have a Payfriend account :o :? :? :? :?
So must be doing the rounds., perhaps linked to emails to friends????
This sort of thing is the very reason that I do not utilise Feebay, PayFriend and all the rest.
Also means I am spared the Viagara and Nigerian offers etc

The scamsters are still at it. I received TWO emails today which I didn't bother opening. The email address was enough to expose the scam.

They were headed/addressed: services{at}intpaypal.com.au Fri, 8:41 am ***SPAM*** Your credit card information has been c...

I suspect the scamsters are informing members that the credit card details have been changed and many in their haste to rectify this scam change will click on the links in the email and enter their passwords etc.

There is one born every minute and one of the members at work is dealing with the case of a woman who fell for a Nigerian scammer on RSVP and sent him more than $70,000 via Western Union. The unfortunate part is most of it wasn't hers to send, but her companies. We won't waste time trying to recover it (from Nigeria). It is a lost cause. She on the other hand will have to pay it back.

$16.77 was transfered by paypal on 20th sept "credit for differences in foreign exchange reversal "

I didn't even know money was in there till I went to pay on ebay today and it said "Use paypal funds" instead of the usual "use credit card XXXX"

Skippy, the clue that this was a valid message (before you got the money of course) was that there were no urls to click on in the original email. :D

to sum it up:

Never Click on a link to Ebay, Paypal, or your bank through an email!

Instead, go straight to their website via Google.

It is best to type the url in directly, bypassing even Google, if possible.

A new one hit my inbox this morning.

It was already flagged as being suspect, but it did not include my name and the web/email addresses were all over the place, so it was easy to spot. And the amount $79.3 ???? They forgot the final digit.

They are banking on you clicking on a link to check the transaction, which will take you to their dodgy site.

It must be a yearly April 'thing'.

The paypal scam is doing the rounds again.

I just received one addressed to me, using my name and email but it is not from papyal and the grammar is dodgy and the links are not to the official address, telling me that I have a balance in my account. No kidding, I would never have known that!

Just a heads up for the unwary.

Greg got the same thing and concerned how my REAL name and real email was obtained .. something most phishing scan do not have.

Looked real on a first glance for that reason.

One problem with PayPal is that your account is your email address. Since your name and email are passed around with transactions, it only requires one point where security is lax for that detail to be hoovered up. I don't believe that the information comes from PayPal itself.

I doubt that paypal has had it's lists hacked, but I do know that there are thousands of people employed cheaply in certain underdeveloped countries, (thus the labour is cheap), just to 'find' peoples emails by searching for keywords and .com names using plain old google word searches.

Probably sitting side by side with those that send out the dodgy emails and phishing scams.

It is a worry as the email was sent only to my email (that I can see), used my real name (like Glen noted for his above) and seemed almost perfect. Except that I only log in direct, so the email means nothing to me as I don't respond.

I've been getting the even dodgier ones from paypal saying that I have made a payment to Skype! Their a hoot.

At least the "watch this video and with 3 words we'll show you how to get any girl to **** you" rubbish lands in the junk mail. Not happy Jan! Especially the first time I had to explain those emails to wifey.

Another clue: I believe you can right-click on the link and the actual link will appear. In a scam that actual link will differ from what appears in the email.

Umm, I click nothing left or right!
All I need to do is hover over the link and the full address is shown, even if 'hidden'.

Hi. I got 3 yesterday 2 minutes apart. They were identical, except one had a slightly different email address for the business I paid my money to.

I came to computers too late in life to fully understand them & I didn't cause myself any damage (I think) more by good luck than good management. Apparently I paid $63.88 for a computer game- which is ludicrous.

The senders address was services@intpaypal.com.au. I didn't click on 'To cancel this payment please...'. It was nice of the sender to give me a Paypal phone no. to ring -as I had no idea- & they were very helpful.

Looking again in hindsight, it's all ridiculous. It says, "you have 45 days from the date of the transaction to open a dispute...", then 2 lines further down, "to cancel this payment please click here". According to Paypal, if you click on that you'll get a virus for free. Perhaps they should have been more proactive and warned their customers(?)

Gmail just dumps these into the spam folder automatically.

I had one of those a few weeks back.

I went directly to the Paypal website (avoiding the link in the email) and saw that they asked me to send a copy of the phishing email. So I did. But my Internet Service Provider (Optus) blocked my email.

After two tries I thought: why? Answer: I guessed that the email itself contained something nasty. So good on Optus for putting that block in place.

Then I composed and sent my own email for Paypal telling them all about it. That one went.

Guess what? No reply.

Cheers,
Ian
