I've been registered on Ebay since 1998 and since then, amongst many transactions, I've only left one piece of negative feedback.

The reason why I left it was because the stamp in question included both a crease and a tear which were not described in the item description and not easily observed in the item's list photo.

If the seller were a novice, and someone who simply sells stamps casually on Ebay, I might have excused the error as a mishap (perhaps selling as a result of a windfall, and because of the nominal price that I paid for the lot.)

However, because the seller seems to specialize in these things exclusively, I thought the their actions amounted to an purposeful misrepresentation of the item.

Of course, after leaving my negative rating, the seller contacted me promptly saying, something to the effect of, "I have a return policy, why didn't you return the item if you weren't satisfied..." but all things considered I felt justified in leaving my negative feedback.

After-all, if a seller presents their-self as someone who stamps exclusively, I expect no surprises in regard to accurate descriptions, etc. At the same time, I could have returned the item, saved my $3, but nevertheless would have had to pay to return an object that I wouldn't have wanted in the first place, if I was aware of its actual condition, and still have been inconvienced over the entire transaction.

Anyway, have you left negative feedback? If so, why?

I really wished I could've left negative feedback on two local sales recently to the same buyer, but as I was the seller I couldnt. Received just one email from the buyer not long after both auctions completed, and I was even offering to drop the items around to them in the end but was getting no response.

Its a bit lame that I can leave two "Did not pay" notices, but not affect their feedback in any way.

You say you paid a nominal sum, so the lot was presumably not of any real value? Depending on how much traffic the seller has he/she might simply have missed the faults. I would have contacted them first and got a refund, only leaving negative if the transaction went bad.

Negative feedback should be used for bad service, not as some sort of corrective therapy for sloppiness or an honest mistake. Just my opinion.

I have left negative feedback in the following circumstances.

1. The item failed to arrive and repeated emails top the seller went unanswered. Eventually I lodged a not received with PayPal. That elicited a response, suggesting I was a con artist and that I had not previously even attempted to contact the seller. I had the eBay email references and quoted them. Seller next claimed that he had had a bad experience with me previously and I was a crook. Never had (and never will) deal with that seller again. In the end, I left negative feedback and wrote the $30 or so off. My feedback related to his attitude, I was quite happy to accept teh item was lost, if only he had responded over the 6 weeks I was initially emailing him.

2. Purchased a forged stamp and refused to return it without first defacing it. PayPal would only refund my money if I returned the item untouched. Refused on the basis that he would sell it to some bunny. I still have the stamp.

The ebay Feedback system is now a total JOKE.

The ebay feedback system has changed DRAMATICALLY over the past 12 years since I first started on ebay.

The current system where BUYERS can now leave negatives at will, and SELLERS cannot do the same or retaliate via feedback to slow payers, abusive buyers, or even total maniacs is insane.

SELLERS can leave a positive feedback, or nothing at all - period.

A 'buyer only' on ebay CANNOT end up with anything other than 100% perfect feedback.

No matter how much they abuse sellers, or lie and cheat and steal stamps each day by alleging shipments never arrive, and being auto-refunded by paypal. So they get them free, and SELLER bears all cost - shipping INCLUDED, in their new insane policy.

When ebay finally catches them (and it takes months) they just start up another account and do it all again, and KEEP all the stolen goods.

Like the insisting on PayPal nonsense, continually rising fees, and hiding bidder handles, and allowing 50 accounts to one person, as per several stamp forging gangs we have exposed, etc, it will contribute to ebay's eventual demise.

No serious successful stamp dealer needs ebay at all - I do not notice Richard Juzwin bothering. :)

The final value auction fee on ebay now when paypal fee is added is OVER 10%. For virtually everyone. This is the reason savvy sellers do not offer quality material on ebay a lot of the time - all major real stamp auctions will gives you a better vendor rate than that.

In the early days it was a transparent venue to buy and sell, and the feedback system then actually reflected the member's past actions.

For honest sellers the constant stupid rule changes erodes the usefulness of it every day.

ebay changed it to make more bucks, and they will pay the price eventually. Their fees were a couple of % - and now they charge more than most mainline global auctions to sellers.

Glen, when someone buys something from your website do you check to see where the buyer has bought goods before and check with these sellers to see if they are a good buyer? No, of course you don't, you bank the money and send the buyer the goods.

As far as I can see, a buyer's feedback can only be of use to the seller if there is a dispute, to see if there has been similar problems before. Whilst the feedback can only be 100%, it's the comments from the seller that count, and I believe a seller can be as negative as they like within this.

Yes, you have to be careful using Ebay, and I have my own rules for using it, but it's a great place to buy for the average collector.

You also have to be careful crossing a road but you don't need to watch a Road Safety video every time you leave the house. :)

Yes, I left negative feedback one time to an Australian seller.
I bought a really expensive PNG stamp and after five weeks and several emails did not receive my letter.

Several weeks later I got my stamp - the seller was in hospital because of an accident!

Back in the day........way back in the day.............I have left neg's for non-paying buyers. It was standard practice as the site grew. Everyone wanted to know who didn't pay or who didn't ship.

But the feedback system started as an non-event, became one of the most seriously guarded possessions, and has reverted back to a secondary, non-functional event. When I started with eBay, if you met a nice person to chat with on one of the forums, if they were helpful or could provide that hidden link to contact eBay staff directly, you gave them a positive feedback. It wasn't tied to sales at all. Before you could say "PayPal", some members had FB of 2000 without really selling or buying much of anything. They just enjoyed being on the forums (discussion boards back then) and trying to be helpful.

I decided a long time ago to let go of my fear of eBay feedback anxiety and haven't given it much thought since. It is what it is and so many have found their numbers manipulated by eBay that I don't think it's very important anymore.

I agree with PeterS.

Mistakes do happen from time to time and even the most reputable seller
can sometime let things slip through.

Why would a reputable seller deliberately and willfully risk their feedback/reputation for a $3 item.

I must admit if I was the seller and you left negative feedback for me without
attempting to resolve beforehand, you would appear on my banned bidders list.

And I therefore take it you felt like a goose for leaving negative feedback?

I have left negative feedback once. Genuine item advertised (philatelic book) but photocopy of half the book sent. Seller refused to communicate about the matter.

I have wanted to leave negative feedback a further three times for item not as described ... totally different in fact.

In one of these the seller was de-listed, so no opportunity for feedback.

In the other two, it took so long to work out that the problem wasn't going to be resolved that the items had dissapeared from my lists and I was no longer able to leave feedback.

I've never left any negative feedback on Ebay. In the couple of cases I haven't been happy the dealers were excellent in dealing with the issue.

I'd like to leave negative feedback for a couple of dealers I've dealt with directly though!

I've left it a few times. All for non-paying bidders.

Even if you do leave negative feedback it seems to 'drop' off the system after a period of time anyway ??

I have left negative feedback to one seller who misrepresented a coin I bought. He advertised it as being 19mm wide but it was actually 11mm wide and was gold plated silver.

I emailed him first to let him know of my grievances but got no reply. Once the negative feedback went in he emailed back with his cell phone number to discuss it.

I rang him to discuss a refund but instead he virtually threatened to kill me by beating me to death. He refused to refund any money despite admitting that the coin was not as advertised. All this was delivered screaming at me and with many expletives included. So I told him not to worry I would take it up with Ebay including our conversation. Then I hung up.

Cut a long story short, Ebay agreed with me, although they took every day of their possible 4 weeks to refund me, but they did banish this seller as well. As usual they gave me very little feedback about their findings.
