This sold on eBay a few minutes ago from a seller in New York.

It is a perforated cut-out from an 1885 newspaper wrapper used on piece with a common 30mm VALLETTA/Maltese Crosses/MALTA c.d.s.

The newspaper wrapper it was taken from:

Catalogue value of the newspaper wrapper (mint or used): €15

Starting price on eBay: US$5

It attracted 3 bidders, with 6 bids in all. How much do you think it went for?

I will post the link to the item and final selling price in a few days' time if there are some votes in the poll.

Hi Matt,
I picked $5 because there wasn't a $1 :( . Looks like it's been in an old album for quite some time.
It looks a bit strange when compared next to the complete wrapper.
The paper looks different and the perfs look not quite right, also like they were cut apart, not torn.

Could it be a die proof on card stock with a favor cancel?? Just a SWAG!

Anyway, I'm interested in the story behind it, and what it sold for.

Thanks,
pat

Hi, I picked $50-75.00. Probably should have gone higher :? ? You just never know what things like this are going to go for! Especially on e-bay.

That newspsper wrapper was printed on both light and dark buff. The one from Wiki (like the one in my collection) is the dark buff, while the cut-out is probably the light buff one.

I don't think so, why would the printer (probably De La Rue) perforate it?

Matt,

"I don't think so, why would the printer (probably De La Rue) perforate it?"

That's the question: Who did the perf & why?

A collector who had a perforating machine (maybe a simple one he made himself)?

Well, 4 people got it correct. The cut-out sold for US$ 86.99

I think that this price is way too high. I wouldn't pay more than $25 (£15) on this. I don't know why the 2 bidders would be willing to pay $80+ for this toned item - I think it is intresting just as a curio - just something made by a collector who had a perforating machine (?).

For patg, it is not a proof - the newspaper wrapper was issued on 1 January 1885, this one is postmarked on 22 June 1909 - a full 24 years after date of issue.

Anyway, if anyone has any comments about this item, feel free to comment here. :)
