Perhaps this post is not on topic but extracting ebay images using Firefox is done by:

- Right clicking on the image and view page source
- Find (Ctrl+F) imgsrc tag (usually has a link such as http://i.ebayimg.com/...)
- Copy that http link and paste it in a new browser window. You should just see the image now. Right click on it and choose the 'Save image as' option.

The last step is only required since this board does not like losing images just because Ebay pulls them off their database.

Cheers
Ram :)

I know it isn't an FDC and it doesn't have a Rs10/- on it but there is something about this that has that certain appeal - the registration label of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu may offer a hint.

I suspect that it is not in the stratosphere like the FDCs so it will nest comfortably in my collection for a while yet.

I agree that cover is a looker and with the Indian Embassy Registration label and postmark, I'd think Indian collectors would be falling over themselves to have it.

Gandhi cover prices have actually shot up in price much much more than the Gandhi stamps. Yes, India and Indians are getting a bit richer. Yes, there are now books which rate the rarity of such covers and which (along with the internet) have made people aware of them. However jumps of 100-200% (maybe even more in say mourning covers) in the last 2-3 years is just crazy. Its a herd mentality out there. Someday many people will get badly burnt like they did in the early 1980s in US and in the 1990s in HK.

Mod Note: cobbie10 and psphani, please save the images from the eBay listings and post the picture here in the thread. When eBay deletes the listing from their server, these will become dead links.

I disagree that people would loose their money, at the most the value of the covers might go down a bit (around 25%) in coming years as 4000$ for FDC is too much but it will definitely increase again after 5-10 years. Its all based on demand-supply. The more the collectors in india, the more the demand and the increase in price. So if a buyer waits for a long time before selling it off, he is bound to make a profit or at least sell it off for no loss.

IIRC, Nepal was not a member of the UPU at this time and so all Nepalese mail for abroad had to be sent with Indian stamps via the Embassy/Legation -- an unusual usage, and so your cover may well be better than most random Gandhi stamp usages. :)

Another point on these Gandhi covers. These are selling for many hundreds or thousands of dollars. However I rarely see them being offered with a certificate.

Any buyer spending so much on any stamp would usually ask for a certificate but not in the case of Gandhi covers it seems. Very strange.

Forgery (and its quality is improving) is becoming rampant in these covers as the allure of quick riches is too much to resist.

It would sell in the range of 250$ - 350$ (USD). If you are a new seller then it should be in the minimum range and if you are an established seller with a good customer base and feedback it would be in the maximum range.

If you attach a RPS / BPA Cert along with the cover, I reckon it should go around $450 (My guesstimate ;)

Well let's be clear.

An alleged price on ebay NEVER means anyone paid that.

This was 9 months back when the Gandhi Lemming Frenzy was at its peak.

There was rampant shill bidding and friends bidding etc on ebay at the time, to try and hook the Bunnies.

If they bid too high well too bad - offer to the under-bidder as "second change" offer.

The top 3 bidders for this did not leave feedback for it, and I am not about to waste my time to see if anyone did.

Very likely it never sold.

How much for a used set of the four Gandhiji Stamps in India? any guesstimates?
Not on a cover, just used four stamps for my collection. If the Rs 10/- is too costly is the other three available?

Girish,
You should be able to get the 3 low values for a few dollars at most (at one time 50c would have been enough). The Rs10/- varies - I would expect that you should be able to get an average used from about $50 upwards. Fine used will cost you more - there is one on ebay at present for $115. A surface damaged mint copy was also there for $28 - so have a look.

Right, I have started looking around and a philatelist here in Bangalore is offering the three low values for Indian Rupees 300 each. Will meet him and look up the quality and decide. I think the price is ok, will depend on the quality of the stamps.
Thanks for the information.

Stampex (Meerut) is quite reliable and is offering decent used sets of the three lower values for Rs 600/= per set.

Visited the link, images bit blurred but looks ok, price wise.
How does one go about buying on EBay ? seems quite scary, never know the guy and I have not made any payment for anything over the net.
Will think it over the weekend.
Thankyou for the information

Thanks Xanthorrea for the Gandhiji stamps. Now I am on the lookout for the Rs 10/- used. Mint would be out of my reach

I have asked few stamp collectors in Bangalore but nobody wants to part with their stamp and I have one offer for used stamp for Rs 5000/- ( about 90 USD). But I am not sure and that is a lot of money!

Cannot tell the wife that is on the wish list now!!
