Simon,

Welcome to stampboards, please feel free to introduce yourself here:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=37

You may not be aware, but the link in the post by "admin" was to a lot he himself had listed with the wrong photo.

He was therefore referring to himself as the moron in question - not you.

The winking smiley  was also a clue that he wasn't being serious.
Cheers
Chris

Hi Simon,

No need to apologise, you weren't to know that admin and Glen were one and the same.

You'll get used to the sense of humour on here - very Australian in style - blunt and unsophisticated, but ultimately harmless.

Cheers
Chris

This one doesn't have long to go, so hopefully someone will see it before it ends.

I'm not sure if it's just a bad pic, or this 3d Kookaburra has errors ie. double frame and also under the str of australia, and around the 3d.

Thought you might like to see it. Sorry, can't remember where to cut off the description part.

Arlene, it just looks like a damaged stamp to me. You can cut off everything after the lot number, like this;

This eBay lot may be of interest to early Australia specialists:

(Yes, I am selling it -- because I collect major number only; if you are into shades and plate faults, more power to you.)

Here is a very large (2 stockbooks full!) Switzerland dealer's stock...loads of CV based on real stamps -- no "funny stuff" like questionable/damaged Cantonal and Rayon issues to bump the cat up while not providing anything you really want in your collection.

A great selection of regular issues, semi-postals, and airmails.

If you win the Switzerland lot above, you'll need something nice to put it in.
Try this hingeless Lighthouse album:

Of course, you could do it the other way: Get the album and then decide you need a big Switzerland collection to fill it up.

If no one bids on these State of Tonk revenue documents, I swear I will never buy anything at a stamp show again just because I thought it looked interesting. :(

Seriously, they are a good deal at 50 cents apiece, and with this large lot you can find all kinds of shades and minor varieties. An instant study project for the bored...

Hi
Just notice this item in eBay and wonder if anyone have any idea about it?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0277734195

They have put up a scan of the ACSC 1994 catalogue, however according to the latest ACSC KGV 2007 catalogue, it is stated that "the status of the printed on the gum error ... is now in serious doubt"

Cheers
Alex

It appears to be the stamp from the catalogue picture. I wonder what Glen knows about it...i.e. who discovered/certified it, who owns it, and why it's being auctioned by someone in Denmark.

I may be wrong (don't have my ACSC with me at work) but I think this item has been delisted, it now being considered that such stamps are really nothing more than 'tin shed' flaws. That is, handling has resulted in some gum adhering to the face of the stamp during the production process. A curiosity but certainly not a major rarity.

When you think about it, there are a couple of questions to ask about a USED stamp that is supposedly 'printed on the gum side';

1. How was it put on an envelope in the first place?
2. Why is there only SOME of the stamp missing (and quite a small part, at that)?

If the stamp had truly been printed on the gummed side of the paper then I would expect most (if not all) the stamp to be affected, as the gum would have come off when the stamp was washed.

Nothing more than a Tin Shed flaw. How on earth did that make it into the ACSC in the first place?

Does that make this pair of mine worth $16,000?

It was 14 years ago and i can only assume that somebody had a brain spasm, or wanted something new to include.

No, they're just Tin Shed flaws. Unusual on the 4d, and good examples of Tin Sheds, but nothing more. Might get $50 for the pair.
Cheers
Chris

I sent a message to the seller, pointing out the current situation. I won't hold my breath on getting a response, though.

1. Easy. Assuming one had such a thing and, not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, wanted to use it on a cover: Get some glue and paste it down, just like people do with MNG postage that they want to (re)use.

2. Now that is a good question. I'm not sure, having done 1. that there is any way to get the stamp off the cover w/o destroying it.

It's going to be a tough sell to convince the lister that the cataloguer made a mistake. The catalogue is God to many people, especially when it tells you what you want to hear.

Why, btw, do they call it a "tin shed" flaw?

Eric, showing the seller a scan of Chris's pair will show he doesn't have something unique. The catalogue he quotes is 14 years old and 13 years out of date.

The term 'tin shed flaw' comes from the fact that the stamp printing works in Melbourne were located in a pretty run down building. The joke did the rounds that teh stamps were printed in a tin shed.

The facilities weren't quite that bad but there seems to have been problems with gum being transferred onto teh printing face of paper, before printing. When na used stamp is soaked the water soluble gum would lift off the face of the stamp, leaving the streaks and blotches seen in the examples above.

Most common in the 1d reds (probably due to the numbers printed, over 1 billion if memory serves) but does occur on all values (pretty much) of the George V heads printed in that particular era.

It's a shame when stamp dealers go out of business, but at least there's the fun of getting to buy their stock...

If you've ever gone through the Australia book and wanted to say "Yes, I'll take it!" then this is a lot for you....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200295521609

Nice roos including a postally used CofA 10/... George V heads to 1s4d (including mint)...lots of commems...a couple hundred $$$ FV of later MNH...should be lots of fun and value for someone. This came from New Hampshire so I doubt any Australian experts have been in it to pick out any good varieties that may be present.

That is an impressive lot, I imagine it will sell for more than 99c, although the postage charge appears rather high at $31.50.

The expensive postage is due to two things:

(1) The stockbook weighs a couple pounds. Airmail to Australia is expensive.

(2) eBay/Paypal policy says anything over $250 must be sent tracked with signature confirmation or the seller is responsible if the PO loses it. That means Express Mail for international shipping, and it's $25+.
