Spotted yesterday were well known Victorian philatelic identies Torsten Weller & Gary Watson at Philas viewing for Saturday's auction.

They spent hours examining numberous lots, but we cannot share what attracted their special attention.

There were also several Queenslanders hoping to identify lots on which they make successful bids.

There are several lots reserved below $50, however prices are creeping ever upwards, with fine material becomming harder to source.

Quite a few "Sydney Views" are up for bidding with the low estimates perhaps reflecting some of lesser quality (?).

The many letter cards & post cards were being closely perused by one & all.

Me thinks the auction results might enable Philas to install (or upgrade) a modern airconditioning system for the building.

The large number of Sydney Views as I understand it, are part of a large collection of early NSW being gradually released onto the market.

Some good postal history items would draw Torsten's attention and I have an idea what's on the banana benders wish list as well

It'll be an interesting day.

I was there on Tuesday Ron and I'll finish off looking through some items tomorrow morning prior to the auction.

P.S. I know what Fercon Jerry looks like (met him that day at your shop), but Goldfinger :?:

He is about one and a half times bigger than Jerry,, heavy,, thin on top.fair complexion, really nothing outstanding in his looks,
but he will be close to Jerry. he has been instructed to try to stop Jerry from biding on every single lot,

Just checked the online catalogue, and noticed Philas has no email address for taking bids.

There are some lots that look of interest, I'll have to double-check the details at home tonight. How to bid though, "that is the puzzlement" (The King and I).

Only postal bids on the bid sheet are accepted and they would have had to arrive no later than last Thursday.

Philas is a volunteer organisation not a commercial one and all profits from their auctions go to fostering philately in one way or another. As such there is no online or emailed bidding.

So it's best to send postal bids in well before their auctions.

I have just come from the early morning viewing session that started at 0830.

I grabbed a coffee from Fercons' favourite Surry Hills haunt - 2 Good Eggs - and went in at 0825.

There was already 20 people in the room queueing for viewings including 3 dealers at the "counter".

When I departed at 0930, I believe that there was already nearly 40 people in the room including 5 at the dealer end!

Jerry (Fercon) and Bruce (Goldfinger) must have slept in or had their nose bag tied on to get sustenance prior to the auction at midday as they were unsighted.

They were taking bid sheets at this mornings session so maybe you could fax them in? :?

Is it a "green" initiative to sell red wine or Scotch or whatever their favoured tipple in bags now?

Both were there Ron. Jerry got some things but missed some things, basically typical auction result for most people.

I left about 2/3rds. of the way through it but noted:

Lot 335 The Netherlands collection mentioned in one of my posts above, with an estimate of $2,500 was passed in. Worth quite a bit more than the estimate but then again collecting the Netherlands isn't that popular in Australia.

Lot 291 - a China stock book with stamps from 1970 onwards and an estimate of $200 got $2,600

A couple of NZ postcard and TPO cancel lots did well. One at $250 estimate got $1,100 and the other at $150 estimate got $1,300.

Lot 581 with pre-decimal coils, most coil starters, roo's, KGV, etc. with an estimate of $2,000 got $6,250

I got some very nice Aust. States material and two large Brit. Commonwealth lots, one with a huge number of lakatoi's and BOP's 8) In fact I needed a trolley to get them all to the car :D

Both Fercon and Goldfinger put in a quick show and tell at the Mooroolbark Fair Late this afternoon.
I think Jerry was too afraid to go home,,,he was suggesting things like ,, could he leave some of the Lots with me,and I ring him up after tea tonight and tell his wife ,,,that he had WON THE RAFFLE....

Even Bruce was amazed at what Jerry Bought,, 20 lots in all,   and spent $4500.
The only good thing about that is he may now not have any money left to clash with me at Prestige on Sat,
