Hi

I will write a (brief) guide to national revenues from Argentina.
I will divide them in groups according to their usage. Most of the material I show here is of my own collection.

1. Documents
2. Bills of echange
3. Consular
4. Insurances
5. Educational
6. Patents
7. Persons Registry
8. Postal Savings
9. Taxpaid: Wines, Liquours, Cigarette, Tobacco, Matches, Hats, Pneumatics, Silk, Leather
10. Military Library

There are also some other stamps, with litle series: Rural Producers Registry, Notaries, Analysys Fees...

1. Documents: this is the commonest type of stamps from Argentina. Used in all kind of documents: bills, deeds, sales receipts.
The first issue is from 1878, in lozange shape, rouletted or perforated. There are also some overprints from 1883. And there are some values from 1883 without the word “fuertes”.
Image

Next series, is from 1884. In 1887 a single 5c. lozenge stamp was issued.
Image

The 1887 series has leaves in its design. A similar series was used between 1889 and 1895, with stars in the upper corners. Since 1896, stamps bear the year in the center of the stamp. The design was the same until 1912.
Image

In 1913, the cets values have the same design as before, but the pesos values have a new design and control numbers in red. Since 1914 to 1929, stamps were made with this new design. And from 1921 to 1929, stamps were valid for two years.

From 1930 to 1937, stamps were issued in two designs: one new design for cents and the previous design for pesos. Stamps were again biannual until 1932: the stamps with 1932-1933 exists with red overprint for either 1932 or 1933. So, from 1932 to 1937 stamps are valid for one year again. The last series with design (1937) has a curious caracteristic: cents values are in red and pesos values in blue.
Image

In 1938 all designs are new: Head of Republic for cents values, Republic with weat for low pesos values, Coat of arms for tens, couple with coat of arms for hundreds. Stamps for 1938, 1939 and 1940 bear the year, but stamps for 1941 have no year indicated.
Image

In 1942 starts the letters code. Each year has a different letter. In this way: B=1942, C=1943... The design is the same until 1953 (M).

The N stamps (1954) have new designs: mother and child for cents, horn of abundancy for low pesos, electricity towers for tens and coal mines for hundreds. The 1954 (N) series has the leyend “2nd Quinquennial Plan” from Peron government. His constitutional government was overtrown by militars in september 1955. So, 1955 (O) series exist in three versions: with plan leyend, overprinted with the name of the new government, and without plan legend. 1956 (P) series has the same designs. Some values exist with two versions of typography in their face values, also.
Image

For some reason, there is no Q series. So 1957 stamps have letter R. The peronist designs were changed for Head of Republic (cents), statue (low pesos), Cabildo building (tens), Coat of arms (hundreds). This design is keeped until 1960 (U). Again some stamps (1p. and 2p.) exist with two different typographies.
Image

In 1960 the design is simplified by erasing the background. There exist a new U series with this new design. By this years inflation start to be an issue, so thousend values appear (design: house of independence). This new design is keeped until 1969. We run out of letters! So we start again: 1965 (Z), 1966 (A), 1967 (B)...

The peso was devaluated in 1970 into “peso ley 18188”, reducing two zeros. So, 1970 (E) series is in this new currency, with same designs. Next year, 1971 (F), the face value climbs up to the top of the stamp. 1972 and 1963 series are similar.
Image

The legend “ley 18188” is abandoned in 1974 (I). Values in hundreds (inflation...) have a new design with a map (*) (I believe there are stamps with this map since 1970, but I haven't seem them). Inflation keeps increasing, and form 1976 (K) all stamps have the map in its design. In 1983 the “peso ley” was replaced by “peso argentino”; stamps are in this new currency, and face value cames into the bottom of the stamp again. R stamps (1984) are the last I have, but there exist until 1987 (V).
Image

(*) This map has a serious problem... In it you can see the province of Los Andes at the NW of the country. But this province was disolven in 1943! So the map used in this stamps in 1970 is obsolete!

Hope you like it!

2. Bills of Echange

Before 1878, this tax was collected by Buenos Aires province, so two different series exist issued by the province.

In 1878, the federal government made a series of stamps in triplets, bearing "Primera", "Segunda" or "Tercera" (first, second, third of exchange). I only have this damaged stamp with trimmed perfs of the first series... In 1884 similar stamps, in a reduced size, are issued.
Imperf triplets appear in 1887. They have the same design as document revenues. The difference is that th have an inscription at the top "1a", "2a" or "3a", and a number (1, 2 or 3) overprinted. The triplets have the value of a single stamp, so there was some fraudulent usage of this stamps as document revenues, with private perforations and scratching the overprint.
Image

In 1888 a new design is introduced, with Hermes head. From 1898 on, this stamps have the year in the center. The newest stamps I have, are from 1916.
Image

Imperf stamps with similar designs are just cuts from bills of exchange with preprinted stamps. Note that they follow the same scheme than national revenues: letter "I"=1949.

Thanks, Ernesto!
This is great information. Very clearly organized, too.

Thanks Steve!

3. Consular stamps

First issue dates from 1887. Except 50c. and 1p. all are in coloured paper. Next issue, from 1892, has oblique “servicio consular”.
Image

From 1897 to 1903 the design is the same, with different year indicated in the bottom part. In 1904 the design was changed to a more little one.
Image

Next series, from 1905 to 1912 have a similar design. Each value has the same color every year, but different color in its value and year.

In 1913 and 1914 a new design, with control numbers is used. And from 1915 to 1921 another design.
Image

A new format is used form 1922 to 1933.
Image

From 1934 to 1951 the size gets a little taller with control number below. Stamps get biannual from 1942.

In 1955 (or so) appear series A stamps.
Image

Last series are similar to document stamps. I know with letters B, C, D, E and F. The latest I have seen is from 1961.

4. Insurances

From 1921 to 1922 biannual stamps with "Libros y Seguros" (Books and Insurances) were issued. The upper legend was changed into "Seguros" (Insurances) between 1923 and 1924.
Image

In 1925 the legend changes again: "Seguros y Warrants". Stamps are still biannual until 1932, when 1932-33 stamps are overprinted in red either for 1932 or for 1933.
Image

The stamps between 1933 and 1940 are for one year only. In 1941 the stamps have no more year (as document revenues). And 1942 bear letter B. These are the last I know.

Next chapter: Educational.

5. Education

These stamps were intended for the fees for adult people who wanted to complete highschool. There was a fee to pay for each test.

Image

- Issues from 1934 to 1935 are larger in size.
- From 1936 to 1940 average size.
- 1941 stamps have no year.
- 1942 stamps bear letter B, and so on. Last letter known is K (1951)

All stamps have a little stamp se tenant, to be affixed in the records.

Next chapter: Patents
