Well there was a SPECIAL GOMC meting held yesterday. Not in he usual location but in the wilds, somewhere between Geelong and Ballaarat. Present were Old Harry, Phyll (chlorophylly), Waroff and McGooley.

I was shocked when I went out to deposit the last items in the boot of the car. Here was Philly and Old Harry, sitting there waiting and it was only 5 to 10am. Philly was early for once i his life.We travelled to Newmarket, where I pointed out several Listed (Heritge) properties, then past Royal Flemington ( where the Melbourne cup has been run since 1860) then across the bridge past the 'Pioneer Hotel' ( also listed, built in 1859) and into Geelong Road (Princes Hwy-No1) past the FOOTSCRAY PARK ( resting place of my mother's ashes) and the now defunct Footscray Park P.O. The past my old primary School (Geelong Road Footscray No 253.), established in 1860 and still going. I was appalled, the playground we used was now full cars.

A little further down, we passed the now defunct Footscray- Geelong Road P.O. over Mt Mistake (built by hand during the Depression in 1931) passed the Western Oval- home of the mighty Western Bulldogs.... ( where are you PeterS???)

Anyway we eventually arrived after the GPS took us up a dead end road. Mrs Mc had the fire roaring and the fruit cake cooked and the fritata ready to go. So we had a coffee (or in Philly's case-2) with beautiful, fresh, warm cake. Then lunch and we were into it postmarks, registration labels, a tray of give-away postmarks, looking at material from a former Geelong P.Soc. member etc.
Goods were exchanged, Harry sold some rare rego. labels which MrsMc was enthralled with, LES got a book on Qantas and I got some postmarks and a couple of PSE's.

Too soon, it was time to leave and drive back to Melb. The road was extremely wet ( wettest day for months) and driving needed every bit of concentration. I don't know how the people who live in Geelong and work in Melb. commute daily. Coming from Mel was a constant stream of cars, 3 wide, all the way from Geelong to where we turned off back onto the Old Geelong Road.

I would have replied earlier, but between choking and laughing (at the use of the term "mighty") I needed a good lie down. I am back to mere laughter now.

I have 227,999 recipes for cooking edible Sea Slugs. :o :?
Would it be possible for some Chef to post up the 228,000th,
so that my menu is complete.
Scallops, Oysters, Sea Cucumber, Mussels, Abalone, Berche-de-mere, winkles
but not Shark fin, as these need to be protected with our koalas, kangaroos, bandicoots and dingoes

I believe he means the word 'fantastic', as in totally unbelievable.

Based on their insipid performance today, that is a word that describes the Western bulldogs perfectly.

Waited until after the last siren sounded, then a bit more. I knew by that time the trains would be less crowded.....but I was wrong. We waited at Southern Cross and no trains for our line came. The platform was packed.

Bringing forward an earlier discussion in this very thread:

Not precisely sure of the formula, but depends on whether you are logged on or not, and whether you have viewed a thread since your last notification or not, and your personal preference settings.

Thanks for that Muruk. I'm still not getting any, so I went in and made sure the right boxes were ticked in my profile.

Ok, I heard this on the local Eastern suburbs radio today, and may not have got it all corect, in all details.
Tunstall Square Post Office is to re-open on Monday the 9th July next.
Now I have no interest in such things, but somewhere out in the S/B ether, there are collectors who chase this sort of thing.
No, I have no idea of when it closed down, or why, just giveing a heads up.
Regards

Is that named after "Arthur Tunstall", who used to run the boxing for the Olympic Games?

Not big brother but rather big pond I think. Annwiggy has also been having trouble receiving notifications about the same time and she has a bigpond address as you and Lawrence do, Bill.

It looks like they may have tightened their spam filters or put Stampboard on a delete list? I'll start a thread on the tech forum to see if other Bigpond users are having similar problems from the same date.

Bill- would you mind logging into to bigpond and going to webmail and checking the spam box to see if the missing notifications are sitting there?

Cheers
Margo

Image

A member of s/b helped me out and deserves a harty thanks and well done. I hope that my local post will add to the wounderful realm of local posts. There will be one stamp a year. They will go on sale on that date and will have a FDC.

Thank you MargoZ. I just checked Bigpond and Inbox had 1 message (not SB), no junk or deleted mail. I saw on News.com.au that Telstra had been sending information to a US based company with the view to building filters of websites but don't know if this tinkering would affect e-mails.

What do you S/B members feel about my new local post stamp The press release with proof and sample will go out to various stamp magazines in preparation of the 27 Aug roll out. I am hoping that when I release it people will like the first issue. I will use the same design but a different picture for the next issue.

I will primarily use the stamps to post my own mail, but if there is interest I will sell them to collectors, I always wanted to see myself on a postage stamp.

Yes, there would be interest $$$$ from certain of the GOMC in FDC, commercial useage both within the USA and to overseas ( Australia hint hint hint,) and in the sheetlets themselves.
Not just at cost, as a profit to you would reduce costs, and encourage hint hint hint you to go further along this line.

Waroff49, make sure that all the grandchildren grow up supporting the Melbourne Demons, or even the (shudder ) Hawthorn Hawks. :!: :!:
Some diseases are heriditary, but this would ensure that your genes do not pass on all the agony, pain, misery and despair that your following the Footscray Bulldogs and Western Puppies has brought on to you over the decades. 8) 8) 8) :!:

Philly, why don't you come straight out and say," I'd like one."

The grand child already has a football team, the Sydney Swans which she inherited from her grand-mother. Her mother is a Hawks (*yuk) supporter. The other daughter is a Swans/Carlton supporter and the boys say"Football, what's that!!!"

Doug, Waroff suffered another weekend to forget (football-wise), so he is just being grumpy. Now, if he followed a decent team, like Hawthorn, then his temperament might be just a tad less grumpy. :D

Well did i get some stick today, -You haven't posted last week's GOMC minutes.........
Well I have been busy, running certain people here and there, paying my car registration (no, can't pay over the phone, or at a bank- you have to come to our offices....) But at least they're paid for the next 6 months.

Today I had to pick up Philly and Old Harry due to Philly's car not going (again).

Quite a good day, lots of show and tell, no transactions. Jerry had postcards and old covers etc. Philly had covers which were selectively arranged- the first to the Willis family (not mine), the second US lighthouses in M/S on cover, 3-4-5 Scouts on covers etc. by about the tenth, I was beginning to lose interest. Then out came a binder of Canadian M/S some on cover, some not, with commercially used Canada covers at the back. Old Harry had an album of KGV commems., including several 1/- black Vict. from 1936. His next item was a LOVE painting from China on handmade paper showing two cats cuddling.(musuem/ Gallery quality.) I had 2 albums of postmarks which interested Jerry (many barred numerals on newspaper wrappers) and O.H. -Vic. 1d pinks with skeleton cancels.

At 5:25 we parted ways, with Jerry taking O.H. home and Philly and i deciding we were hungry- so we went out for dinner.

Now I am working on my off the cuff talk to Geelong P.Soc. on Sat. night (well prepared but it won't finish up that way.) and mounting..mounting ...mounting items for display.

  May I suggest to Waroff49 that he makes some enquiries, just to ensure that the Geelong Philatelic society does not meet in a hall,
in close proximity to the fresh fruit market

No, I'm not spilling the beans on where we of the Croydon Maf. meet.

Just can't wait to see McGooley's expose on Footscray. (BN 149), should be some interesting reading there. Like sheep and cattle still being droved down Geeling Road between the Newmarket Saleyards and Brooklyn and people coming out with their buckets and shovels to collect the droppings ( and that was in the 1950's).

Before Muruk gets to this. I assume you meant to write "A long way past". :?:

Before muruk gets to this. We assume that you meant to write "as I drove at a sedate pace along the Geelong Road."
And two fingers does not constitute "a wave." :?
Is it true that 5 of the members had to be awakened after the talk, to join in the thunderous silence :?:
How was the plane flight back from Fremantle, after the Western Puppies defeat :?: :?: :?:
And what on Earth, or above, is this DNS safety check that people are mentioning. Are we heading for Doomsday later today?
I already do not receive S/B emails

The quote from our own on-the-spot government reporter might help make sense of this......or not
Quote:
11/09/11

Six Estonian nationals have been arrested and charged with running a sophisticated Internet fraud ring that infected millions of computers worldwide with a virus and enabled the thieves to manipulate the multi-billion-dollar Internet advertising industry. Users of infected machines were unaware that their computers had been compromised—or that the malicious software rendered their machines vulnerable to a host of other viruses.

Details of the two-year FBI investigation called Operation Ghost Click were announced today in New York when a federal indictment was unsealed. Officials also described their efforts to make sure infected users’ Internet access would not be disrupted as a result of the operation.

FBI Statement:
Janice Fedarcyk, New York
Assistant Director in Charge

Janice Fedarcyk“Today, with the flip of a switch, the FBI and our partners dismantled the Rove criminal enterprise. Thanks to the collective effort across the U.S. and in Estonia, six leaders of the criminal enterprise have been arrested and numerous servers operated by the criminal organization have been disabled. Additionally, thanks to a coordinated effort of trusted industry partners, a mitigation plan commenced today, beginning with the replacement of rogue DNS servers with clean DNS servers to keep millions online, while providing ISPs the opportunity to coordinate user remediation efforts.” More

The indictment, said Janice Fedarcyk, assistant director in charge of our New York office, “describes an intricate international conspiracy conceived and carried out by sophisticated criminals.” She added, “The harm inflicted by the defendants was not merely a matter of reaping illegitimate income.”

Beginning in 2007, the cyber ring used a class of malware called DNSChanger to infect approximately 4 million computers in more than 100 countries. There were about 500,000 infections in the U.S., including computers belonging to individuals, businesses, and government agencies such as NASA. The thieves were able to manipulate Internet advertising to generate at least $14 million in illicit fees. In some cases, the malware had the additional effect of preventing users’ anti-virus software and operating systems from updating, thereby exposing infected machines to even more malicious software.

“They were organized and operating as a traditional business but profiting illegally as the result of the malware,” said one of our cyber agents who worked the case. “There was a level of complexity here that we haven’t seen before.”

DNS—Domain Name System—is a critical Internet service that converts user-friendly domain names, such as http://www.fbi.gov, into numerical addresses that allow computers to talk to each other. Without DNS and the DNS servers operated by Internet service providers, computer users would not be able to browse websites or send e-mail.

Success Through Partnerships

A complex international investigation such as Operation Ghost Click could only have been successful through the strong working relationships between law enforcement, private industry, and our international partners.

Announcing today’s arrests, Preet Bharara, (above left) U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, praised the investigative work of the FBI, NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG), the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board, and he specially thanked the National High Tech Crime Unit of the Dutch National Police Agency. In addition, the FBI and NASA-OIG received assistance from multiple domestic and international private sector partners, including Georgia Tech University, Internet Systems Consortium, Mandiant, National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance, Neustar, Spamhaus, Team Cymru, Trend Micro, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and members of an ad hoc group of subject matter experts known as the DNS Changer Working Group (DCWG).

DNSChanger was used to redirect unsuspecting users to rogue servers controlled by the cyber thieves, allowing them to manipulate users’ web activity. When users of infected computers clicked on the link for the official website of iTunes, for example, they were instead taken to a website for a business unaffiliated with Apple Inc. that purported to sell Apple software. Not only did the cyber thieves make money from these schemes, they deprived legitimate website operators and advertisers of substantial revenue.

The six cyber criminals were taken into custody yesterday in Estonia by local authorities, and the U.S. will seek to extradite them. In conjunction with the arrests, U.S. authorities seized computers and rogue DNS servers at various locations. As part of a federal court order, the rogue DNS servers have been replaced with legitimate servers in the hopes that users who were infected will not have their Internet access disrupted.

It is important to note that the replacement servers will not remove the DNSChanger malware—or other viruses it may have facilitated—from infected computers. Users who believe their computers may be infected should contact a computer professional. They can also find additional information in the links on this page, including how to register as a victim of the DNSChanger malware. And the FBI’s Office for Victim Assistance will provide case updates periodically at 877-236-8947.

And, in the interests of accuracy, there were only 3 people who had to be resurrected after Waroff's talk - all of whom collect mint stamps

But there was an entertaining - err - "discussion" on the properly constituted boundaries of Footiscray Council.
