The CANDARIN stamp is one of the Dragon issues of China 1885 or 1888 depending on the perforation.

The others are the Peoples Republic of China 1953.

Mark, there's a thread here all about posting images (just click on the link below):

http://stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=284

I see you're already using Photobucket, so you're more than half-way there...

It really is dead easy - if people like Glen and me can do it, it must be

Good luck 8)

There is an option to increase the size of the image so select 15" I think it is.

Had to go and have a look. Just under where you upload is a (more options) click on that and increase to 15".

If you know there are reprints, then you probably know about the collar button secret mark on the reprints. A higher resolution image is needed to see it clearly.

Are you sure the "Exercise" stamps are perf. 14. They, and the reprints, are supposed to be perf. 12 1/2.

I think you would need to have both an original "Exercise" issue and a reprint side by side to tell.

The originals are on thinner grey paper - the reprints on thicker white paper.

The originals have darker colors - the reprints are brighter.

Thank you very much for that, i will find that very usefull as i have over 8000 in my collection, it was left to me by my grandparent about 20 years ago, it was held by my nan untill recently, so i am now keen to know the history, as my grandfather was in the army as an office and picked many up while he was serving in asia area, so it a bit of history about my dear grandad.. i remember some of his collection as a child but only recently started to research them..

The images have scanned very bright, checked both sets i have of the flags, both are on grey, thin paper with the flag colours being dull.. is there anything else i could check on the stamp, i do have a digital microscope with x600 zoom.. The other set i have is of diffrent value, was there more that one set of these... also does that principle apply to all china stamps, as i have 2 sets of the gymnastics by radio.. Many Thanks.

On the stamps with Mao and the flag, check for the dot (secret mark) on his collar button.

On the stamps with just the flag:

-the dots that shade the star are at a different angle in relation to the star
-the leaves below the flag and to the left are grey-brown on the on the reprints -- red-brown on the originals
- under UV light the originals are bright - the reprints are dull

There is another set 1000, 2500, 5000, 10,000 and 20,000 issued for what is usually called Northeast China. It is basically Manchuria. Look closely, you will see that those stamps have four additional characters. Those characters translate into something like the "Northeast Postal Service."

What are you referring to as the "principle."?

Nice scan.

Is the difference between white and grey papers readily noticeable on your copies?

If you could scan the other side, I would love to see if there is a noticeable difference in the shades.

For the flag stamp (only 800 value):

ReprintImage

OriginalImage

I'm sorry for the second image (i took this on internet), tomorrow i will scan my original set and i'll post a better one.

For the small values it needs a better scan, your scan is quite blue and in this way it's impossible to identify these stamps.

Yes, it's impossible to confuse them

maptrekker wrote:

In some values yes, in other less. I'm posting some old scans, tomorrow i will scan some values to show you difference (in italy now are 00.30).

For the Mao stamps the easiest way to identify reprints is verifying perforation: in the original set is 14, in the reprint set is 12,5.

This morning (in Italy) i scanned some originals.

This is my original "flag" (800 value):

Image

I think that with this jpg it's easy to see the different angle of the dots.

In this scan a comparison of 2 small values (original on the left):

Image

As you can see paper is quite different.

As i promised to maptrekker i scanned the front of some excercises stamps (originals always on the left):

Some stamps seem similar but with stamps in your hands is pratically impossible make a mistake.
If you want to buy online, the better way to be sure that the set is original is to ask to the seller to scan the rear of the stamps near a reprint set.

In four years that i collect PRC i never found a website with this kind of informations.

If you need i can post other scans that can help to identify originals from reprints (reprinted sets are 16).

I have several blocks which I thought I'd originally determined to be a mix of original and reprint. Based on your scan from behind, would anyone care to offer an opinion on these blocks?

Could any be original?

All reprints?

Reprint?

Thanks for trying to help me sort.....

Hi everyone,
Does anyone recognize these? They were part of a collection we inherited and they were stuck in with the China section, but weren't cataloged. I can't find them in the scotts book.

Much appreciated,

Left hand stamp is Manchuria/Manchukuo, 1944 Friendship with Japan; the right hand stamp is a Japanese definitive from (I think) the 1950s. Sorry, I can't help with Scott numbers.
