This collection is being offered for £30.00. Is it worth buying?

Please remember, the move to collecting Penny Reds is a recent thing for me, if these were German stamps, I could tell at a glance whether they were worth it or not. I seek the groups accumulated wisdom here.

Seems like a handful of numbers repeating themselves, so not a lot of variety. But hey, some of them have a '77' numeral postmark, so you could boast to people you have "a 77 Penny Red".

Quite a few perf faults, but these are all penny red stars, which is a plus, and you have very nice cancels there.

The price is at most 4.5% of cat, so I'd say on balance a reasonable deal. Go for it if you feel like it!

Good day to you

From the ebay page the identification of SG40, specialised C10 suggests that there would be no pleasent surprise of an inverted wmk  however the concise cat value is £10 each so would you consider less than 10% good value?

Regards

Feebletodix

edit: Joel got there first

Hi Joel,

I must say I noticed the one in the bottom right first because of the colour difference. It might be a pale red.

Regards

Thank you Feebletodix. You are right that the colour is different, although I'm hopeless when it comes to identifying shades, so I will let someone else opine on that.

Best Regards,
Joel.

The caveat is always the same with scans, they are different in real life.

I was estimating that since the shade is noticeably redder than the shades of rose it would be either red-brown or pale red. Since the pale is a tenth the value of the red-brown I would say the seller would have put in the cheaper shade.

Now waiting for an expert to correct me

Regards

Feebletodix

Thank you good people, I bought them. I had noticed that although there were repeat numbers, the shape of the cancels is different.

Is there a web site that lists cancels?

My cut-off point is generally 20% of cat. Of course, if it something I really really want to have... :D

A while back, I asked if anyone knew of a site that listed shades, reply was there none.

I found this:

There is some literature you can download here

http://www.philatelicsannex.org/reference/reference.html

It has pdf's of books including Billig's from memory, they might be of some use.

The GBPS website has a basic listing of the London District ones such as these.

http://www.gbps.org.uk/information/po-numbers/london.php

However, the allocation of the numbers did change over time which is why some of the numbers have multiple entries.

Aye, I did notice that. You have the same number for two towns at opposite ends of the country. is there any way of differentiating them?

I am not sure I quite understand the question.

All the cancels on these stamps are of the styles used by the London District office and all the numbers on the specific link to the GBPS are also for the London District but it is intended to be a simplified listing. It does not say when the numbers were allocated to the individual offices - for that you would need a specialised list and I do not know of one that is online.

I believe that the higher numbers (as you mainly have here) were not allocated to specific offices until (at least) 1874 and before that they were used to cancel mail in the General (i.e. central) Office and later at District Offices. Given the likely dates of use of these stamps, it is probable that they were not cancelled at the local offices.

BTW, I don't collect London cancellations so am far from an expert. But, if you want to know about the rest of the country, then I can bore you 'til the cows come home

If you want some more, I have thousands - and not just London cancels like the ones you show.

Word of warning about collecting QV cancels, London is pretty easy to complete (as long as you don't go silly with minor variations), England & Wales is a challenge but I think it's possible in a lifetime, Scotland would take two lifetimes... and Ireland - don't even start, it will drive you crazy!

Also remember that perf faults and such like are secondary to the cancellation when collecting postmarks.

Cheers,

Robert
