So, PeterS are saying you don't like tautologies because the GOMC expects joint cooperation from its members. :?

Dear GOMC may ask for some advice.

About a decade ago I was working for a company and a co-worker took advantage of an offer of mine to go through some of my doubles. I let him have three bags to go through.

At the same time someone made a nasty accusation about me behind my back and the management had a secret investigation. Now I realised something was going on because of the change in behaviour, so I questioned the manager, who looked out the window and said there was nothing wrong but in such a manner he made me believe otherwise. This was deliberate. After a few months of this stress level I left before I broke not having been given the opportunity to defend myself.

Back to the samps, when I left I asked for the doubles back, a lesser quantity of rotw came back but neither of the bags of Australian, but there was a nice selection of clean 10p Portugese which I considered a reasonable exchange for the rotw. When questioned as to how many he needed he got angry and admitted about a dozen. I realised at this point he had either forgotten about the Australian or he was taking advantage of the situation, and that I was going to get nowhere.

He has now turned up at the local auction.

Should I ignore him or confront him?

I do not wish to make a scene at the auction and I do not want these unfounded accusations being spread around again.

Oh yes and example of the management behaviour.

Some one rings up and ask to speak to me using the phrase "Is he available" to which the reply was "He is not your way inclined" and the manageress put the phone down.

If you cannot in a polite fashion make further enquiries as to whether or not he now remembers where he put.......
Then ignore him.
You can start up a ruckus, it will give you no satisfaction as to the result, and bring to attention of everybody present.
Those who know you in the interveneing years, have already made up their opinion, you only risk damageing it
but how would I know,
I ignore many people, including Peter, Pieter, Pater, Pierre, Petronelli, Pedro.........
Life is too short to stress over many things, or else I would still be married., Glen would be a small part time dealer, Mr Boggler would be shovelling snow in Scotland, Waroff would be treating blistered feet, and Fercon Jerry would be shovelling Shellgrit.
But come out to the GOMC and I will take you out to dinner.

Thankyou.

I have just tried to start four different sentences and they are but gibberish.

Thankyou.

If I ever get to visit my cousin down under I will take you up on the offer as long as I can buy the drinks.

Be well

Mr B, I noticed these last week going for a song and picked them up on the off chance they might be of some interest to you. If not I'll find a place to put them.

WeirdAl,
Unlike Philly I am satisfied with ONE of nearly everything except Footscray postmarks and some scout material. I have the Papua First Flight ( and he has 7-8, but he's not greedy-he's Philly)

Just got up to see your most generous offer Thank you,

I will keep one, possibly the top one as I do not have a 5d rate into Ireland the other two will be passed onto Jerry,as at least one of them has a nice double ring CDS.of Corcaigh 2 which I am sure Jerry will like,

I also note that they are all addressed to the same family.which I am sure will add to the interst, perhaps Allanswood or Skippy may tell us more, using their Sherlock Holmes Skills :?

Thanks for the offer Al, but this one does not fit into WW11 era, its a bit too late,
But Waroff on the other hand does collect Aust Postal History, and there are a couple of marks he may like.

But thank you for the offer.

Philly,
I've had some for ages but it got a real boost with Old Yeti's 20Kg of RTS to a book company. mentioned here before you last paid your Telstra account.
Also a few from auctions.

Trust you to sneak in behind a man's back, when he's out viewing, (E+When he's sleeping is O.K., especially when it's U)

There is a planning meeting today in the dungeon- Muruk will be down- not sure if morning or late afternoon depends on his seminar commitments. Remember he has work for a living.

To Pilot- I'm not really into the KGB engraved issue, although I do have a few. I don' have any plating references at all, apart from ACSC. It is not all that good for plating.

A question for the Grumps
I'm going to look at some GB penny blacks this weekend (hoping to buy one) so what is a fair price to pay
for a 4 margin,3 margin or a 2 margin and are maltese cross cancels worth more :?:

A premium depending on condition and appearance, nice wide margins with clear neat MX (preference for a SON MX? or off the edge leaving the face clear). Not thinned etc

4 margin $100-$150 depending on how big the margins are. Sometimes more$
3 margin $65-75
2 margin $40ish (spacefiller grade)

What's a good/great margin? About 1mm all round would be fabulous.

99% of them will have MX cancels - no added value unless a weird colour (and you won't find one with a weird colour!)

Some plates are much harder than others and worth more.

Here are some questions on blocks:

1. What exactly are they?
2. Is it important to collect them?
3. Which ones should you collect?

A BLOCK is four or more stamps joined together generally 2x2 or anything up to a pane.
STRIP- 3 or more in a single line.

Importance- depends on the stamps but Glen thinks collecting blocks is the way to go.With peel and sticks it is almost impossible unless they haven't been die-cut. Some blocks are worth more- those with imprints, plate numbers or cylinder numbers. Blocks are generally rarer than singles or pairs.

Which to collect- any you can get your hands on, if you're so inclined. Plate/imprint blocks are better.

Much like your avatar. :D

Me, I don't specifically collect them. Have been known to swap them for singles when I don't have the single. But that's personal choice.

Could have torn the block into singles, but that would have deprived a block collector of an opportunity. Can't put them back together.

After the viewing with the Silver Fox earlier in the day, the Council of War was held back at the Croydon Mafia's headquarters. But peace prevailed, not even a skirmish, and the peace pipe was smoked ( outside ). This was after lunch had been consumed. Then afternoon tea was consumed.
One of the GOMC was so excited about the auction, that after spending all day yesterday viewing lots, he went back again today. We understand that he has now inspected every lot, at least once. Now if he could only remember what was in which lot.....
but his name and bum shape are etched into the seat.
He was unable to sleep last night, such is his excitement, and will be seeking medical treatment for his sleep disorder, Compulsive Acquisition Syndrone, and the allergic reaction rash brought on by handling an excess of old stamps.
There is to be a breakfast strategy meeting at 10.00 am, followed by morning tea, a trip to the auction rooms with a luncheon repast, the Auction and afternoon tea, followed by an evening of dineing out.
Then there will be wine, whingeing pom jokes, wenches and Amy Winehouse background music, as the serious question are asked, "Why did you bid on lot..." or "Why did you not bid on lot.....?." Perhaps then a bit of swapping of material.

Well there is only one lot I'm after and it's starting price is already high for me, but to dream, to dream. a piece of history!

They are around and I have 2 pairs, but not often seen as they normally just stuck a 2 penny blue on the cover.

However not a huge premium over 2 singles, but as Mr B says, there should be a bit extra for a pair - perhaps 25%?

Now a pair on cover or a single on decent cover and your $75 stamps becomes about $150+.

Keep an eye out for invereted watermarks as well, much harder to get.

Your avatar is a No Imprint Block as well. Originally, there would have been a By Authority imprint in the bottom margin. This was burnished off the plate when the decision to cease having imprints was taken (too many annoying collectors wanting just a corner block and making counting difficult for the clerks).

Does that mean that I can make any block of my own and collect it? Or does it have to be a corner or at least shoeing the edge of the paper?

The catalogues don't show or list them, how does it get valued?

imworld, the person you wish to thank for giving you your avatar is probably Margo.

When you join,if you do not submit your own avatar a moderator gives you one until you can provide your own, if you want to change it. :?:

When I joined that person was Margo and she does a great job by trying to match your avatar to your collecting interests. Things may have changed and if they have I'm sure someone will point it out to me, but thanks to Margo from me anyway. :D

How odd. Put in a bid, went out and forgot about it... and won it!

1841 Goulburn entire - just 8 years after the area was established. Not even a "town" until 1859.
Happy to get it. One of the oldest possible covers for Goulburn, not to mention an early Australian cover in general.
Now to do some research on the letter when it arrives. :D

[quote="Feebletodix"]Thankyou.

I have just tried to start four different sentences and they are but gibberish.

Thankyou.

If I ever get to visit my cousin down under I will take you up on the offer as long as I can buy the drinks.
You do not know me.....drinks could end up more than the meal
And as to gibberish, well we understood it all, after having to translate the Scottish murmer drawl of an abandoned language that some use on us
Thank you to muruk for an enjoyable evening repast.
The auction day was a success for some, others blown out of the water by some of the prices achieved

Be well, or at least pleasant to those that you encounter.

It was a Route at the Auction today,
Got none of the lots I wanted, and NOT for the want of trying, went well over what I thought but to no avail, they went through the roof,
e.g.lot 22 an OFFER lot, I took it up to $1400.00.and dropped out as I only wanted to go to $1000-1200. but it ended up at $2400.00.
all the other lots I was after went the same way,.
I managed to grab a couple of lots before the ship went down, and am happy with those,BUT so disappointed with the others,
Harry got one lot for $800.and I think he would have gone into the Thousands anyway as he WANTED IT.
Bruce got his lot44 that we were warned off on,
Don,t know about Waroff or Philly yet,as I was shattered, with the losses.
then to top it off the Bleedin computers were on the fritz.and it took me 3/4 hour in the Q before I even paid,,,Bleedin Auctions, should be a Law agin em.

I put a specky on lot 511 (with the 1842 cover from "Melb/NSW! to Edinburgh") in the mix and it looks like I came second. Might have been a nice lot with a 2d views and a 3d views on cover in them. Anyway...

There are a couple that didn't sell that I'm now interested in. :D

Gary has parted company with very 2 key staffers recently, one of who was tall Dan who was the computer whizz.

I got one lot. Lot28 for the princely sum of $34+taxes. In the end I had to give Philly a stern warning, as it was one of the items discussed at the planning meeting. It was funny though- Philly wanted the magazines/Lit. and I wanted the Hawid mounts. Anyway Muruk finished up with one of the books, which he said will be returned after he has studied it.

Like MrB, I was blown out of the water on all the other lots I wanted. I left early but I think Gary would be laughing all the way to the bank on this auction.
The guy sitting next to me must have spent $10,000, I reckon. From what I recall it was on India and China material.

At one stage, I thought I'd have to give MrB - mouth to mouth, he went so pale and droopy, but he recovered enough to give me the rigid-digit on one of my comments. Tim who was sitting near me nearly got a $3400.00 lot because he lifted his paddle at the wrong time, things were so hectic early on.

Thanks Raz- yes Margo is still the avatar fairy with some help from Brummie and Kevin Hedley.
Glad you like your block, Imworld

Gary welcomed those attending, especially from interstate, and at least one from overseas, but he did not notice the Klingon speaker who arrived late into the auction after a long journey for one particular item only.

The Prestige auction, so far as Australia goes anyway, seems to have been very successful. Very few unsold lots.
