PeterS,

I am trying to get Linn's Stamp News to publish another postal strike article, and another article on postal strikes, I also enclosed to them another article. They are unsure if they want to publish the original postal strike article since it is being published by the APS in summer 2012.

It was published under 1st North American rights (APS) I hope they will publish one of the postal strike articles I want to become an expert. Since I can't drink I can't add to the wine discussion. When any of the articles are published I will if any of the GOMC's want a copy e-mail a copy of the article or since they send 5 copies I can snail mail one to you, let me know.

Question for you all what do you think of this cancel. Dealer has several other roos with this same type of partial what looks like Adelaide cancel not all the same size almost like a CTO. It looks a bit fake to my eye what do you think thanks.

Probably genuine. Certainly not a CTO, in any event.

Is there any evidence of soaking off paper? or rements of paper? But if it was not soaked off paper or has rements of paper? (PeterS beat me to the post, as I was typing this) the cancle does look like it says Adelaide ( I was going to say CTO, but since I have no roo's).

It cannot be a CTO stamp, even as a Third WMK (which this appears to be). The cancel is certainly Adelaide (South Australia) and is probably just a nice FU stamp.

BTW, the letters appear small and close together because the whole State Name (South Australia) forms the opposite part of the canceler.

If it were to have gum then it is, at best, a per favour cancel

I dont think that it can be a CTO from the sets.
If the dealer has a number of them, do they make up a set? :?:
In which case, it MAY have been someone wanting a "per favour set" with such a cancel.
These were not letter rate stamps.
Adding a fake cancel to mint stamps would not appear to add any value :? :?: :!:

myki (at)#$%^&&(*())_=
Yesterday I travelled by train, after purchasing a ticket.
There were signs up to the effect that ticket sales would be ending, and you had to have a myki ticket. So I enquired about it at the station, and was given a form, but told to that I could do it over the phone.
Today I telephoned the given number 13 6954, but was told the number had changed :? :?: and I would be transferred.
Spoke to a pleasant lady, who knew nothing, and kept having to put me on hold.. music
Wanted to know my mother's maiden name ( does not everybody ) and then stated that it was already registered. D'oh...I am not an only child..thank goodness it was not 'Smith"
Spent half a hour on the phone going through it, including "DO you agree to our terms and conditions/"
I thought ..beauty, we can negoiate this, and requested exclusive use of my own carriage    No, agree to THEIR terms, or do not travel
Then they want $3 for the ticket, can't take the currency of the country, can't send an account and can't pay by bank transfer     BUT have to have access to my bank account. :? :? :? :? :x
Even with that, 10 business days to send it, but instant payment
Wrong form given to me??? So I have to get another form a...and start again.
Is not technology sooo heelpful, as it means instead of buying a ticket, I can join the queue massed up trying to swipe off..NOO, you can't swipe with the "Swipe" card, but must hold it there  :? :x :x   but really

MYKI has been around on the Geelong Bus/Train network for around 3 years. I purchased a MYKI on day one, and found it reasonably satisfactory, as I then had not need to carry change around in my pocket for a bus ticket. HOWEVER, it stopped working around 18 months later.

Either the chip died or there was some other failure. So, with around $3 Credit in it, I purchased another (cost $10.00) and it died within 3 months, simply because the card cracked right through the Microchip which is what the scanner works on. I had over $20 Credit on it at the time.

So, I have two MYKI's with over $31.00 credit on them which simply don't work. I can get a "refund" or yet another replacement, but they are going to charge around $10.00 per card to refund, or replace with a new one, and I need to either go to Melbourne (another Train fare) or send them this stupid, long, convoluted form, with all my debit card details before they will do a damn thing.

All this to save ten cents per day against buying short term tickets. What I have sitting right here is 310 lots of 10 cent daily savings, so I just thought stuff 'em, and buy daily short term tickets now.

BUT (there is always a but), Phily, if you have a Seniors card, you can get a MYKI card absolutely free. No cost, no Credit Card details required. Just evidence of your Seniors Card. That's another State Secret that nobody is willing to tell you. And it entitles you to free Public Transport on a Sunday, and during Seniors Week in (I think) October.

Norm, they should have replaced the defective miki card free of charge, and transferred the balance.
according to the info on their website
http://www.myki.com.au/Manage-my-accoun ... -myki-card

also says you can get refunds at any time
http://www.myki.com.au/Manage-my-accoun ... -myki-card

might be worth a shot ?? (good luck)

What's a Seniors Card you old foggies?!
I'll have to wait a few more years...although wifey says that mentally I qualify already and she should be getting a carer's pension for looking after me.

Skippy, the trick is in the fine print. I got the replacement forms from the Post Office, which specifically stated that I needed to provide Debit/Credit Card details so that they could deduct my account for the replacement service charges

I have a Senior's Sunday Pass  , that entitles me to travel free on both Saturday and Sunday, and during Seniors Week.
But it ends, and I need to have a myki to be entitled to travel for free, not just be of a muture age, although that is the only qualification for it.
If I travel after the end of the month, at weekends, I will have to pay a full fare, because I am not useing my myki, for free,
The myki person I spoke to also took down my Senior's Card details, but I still think that it was her first day on the job     pleasant but
The Railway staff gave me that Seniors application, and did indeed tell me that it was the right form :?: :?: :?: The myki person said it was not :?: :?: :?: :?:
When I was in Sydney recently, I just bought a daily seniors ticket, cost $2, for all rail, bus and ferry traffic. Everybody swipes up there, which was   eye opening compared to here, where the young and fit just hurdle the gateways. :(
I think that they just want to GPS and know everywhere thatI have been
I need a glass of sour Chardonnay  :? :o :o

The last 3 mornings have been frosty.
It was -1 yesterday morning just before the dawn. :D

It's getting hard to sort stamps while wearing ski gloves.

This is the stupid thing about Myki, the seniors ones are supposed to have your name on them.....guess what- mine doesn't BUT it works. It also has a big green 'S' for seniors.

I do wish they would identify where the chip is?????

Something else I found out from the helpful railway staff- It's not a swipe card- you have to hold it still until the reader gets the card number.

Couldn't agree more. 'S' for Saint but it should be 'B' for Bulldogs.
You're right Timbres, putting up with Philly can be very trying...... but at least he cares.

These are collectable, given - a) full slogans and b) clear dates. It's a rather specialized area, and the market is small and relatively inexpensive.

It is, as previous post, a specialised area, but one that used to be far more in the eye. The now defunct Australian Stamp Monthly used to spend several pages on them each month during the 1960s and1970s.
The specimen ones are often not used on postage, but as demonstrated by salesmen of the meter machines, who did not want to put money to waste.
The specimen ones  COULD :?: find a home, here in Victoria, if you do not want them.

Weird Al, they are definitely collectable. Although it must be said, most companies that had machine or label cancellers were fairly large with a high turnover rate but even saying that, there are some that are rarer than others. As far as P.O's went, again it was only the higher turnover ones that had machines. Today, most of these use Postage Paid printed envelopes and never see a canceller.

CDS are probably the rarest animals now, as basically they are only used on items taken in to a P.O., and even then there is no guarantee of a CDS.

We will soon get to the point where all CDS are philatelic. You won't get one unless you demand it.

I know it will be harder to confirm, but if you hand your mail over the counter at my PO they will cancel it with a CDS without asking - they just do it anyway and not just for me.
There is one on every clerk's counter and they have about 7.

Yeah, just mail them to me, useing real stamps with CDS
I think the ASM idea was to find the number of the machine mark, list them alphabetically, then numerically within the alphabet, and identify who was useing the machine. eg A459 = ABC Bookshop from their Abbotsford office period of use `2/ 1959 to Jan 1956 then DRF Fishmongers from May 1956 to closure of decimal period.
one ,machine could be used here for a while, traded back in or axchanged, and that firm would then go on to use another number.
Do I recall it correctly, are there a machine registration number on the meter.
Just memories from last century, i never collected them ( except for specimen cancel
regards

No I've gone for the top shelf.......want a quick response. Worst game I've seen in years. I think I would even pick the GWS in two weeks time and Melbourne next week.

Talking of ferals on trains.... when I alighted at Ringwood tonight, there were about 6 police rushing through the barriers as I was trying to clock my Myki off. They ran up the ramp yelling ,'STOP..... POLICE'. I don't know who they were chasing but I didn't see them catch anyone. Maybe it was just a training drill......hehehehe.

Read my annotation on the catalogue reprints I sent you.

Legal if you do it right.

But if you want to read the Copyright Act for yourself ... set aside a good week or so.

And remember, the original purpose of the Copyright Act was so that works would be released to the public domain a short while after the death of the author.

"Short" used to mean 7 or 14 years (depending on country) ... now it's a bit longer.

Or were you referring to acquiring some red?

I got the results of the DELPEX 2012 one day show exhibit, despite frame 2 page 10 missing a exhibit piece (oops  ) I won the Silver Multi-frame ribbon (they use ribbons instead of medals) :D and even though there is no award for the most popular exhibit mine was ranked #2 behind a exhibit of jenny stamps including the error.

I am satisified but I need to watch out to be sure I include all exhibit pieces.

Waroof49er,
It is not I that collects the out-lewd, is that not Paul the Manantee
:!: Now then , copy the Monographs as a security back up for your own information, only.
Then send them up to someone who is interested, allow them to make copies of the limited number of pages that they require for their own research purposes, and return the originals to you.
Then pass on to me the accompanying Thank-you present, for my collection of used wine corks.
I went to the Kilsyth Club earlier today, and on the television was a replay of a AFL match from yesterday.
It was good that Waroof49 was not with me, he would be recovering on the VSOP Brandy medicine by now. Same result as yesterday :P :P :P

Here's a question from the GOW section of the GOMC!

It is about the gum used on Australian stamps over the last 10 years or so.

I am at present selling stamps on behalf of a friend who has lived and worked at Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory for many years.

Amongst them were lots of mint stamps (full gum) that I am using for postage.

I also have supplies of mint that I have purchased from Glen and others over the past year or so.

The MYSTERY comes when I go to affix them to the package, the ones from the Territory simply will not stick and I have to use glue, the others a quick lick of the tongue and there they are.

Anyone an explanation? It's not just one here or there, its every time!!

Incidentally, is it only on Tuesdays that you are meeting at the Kilsyth Club? That's the one day in the week that I have commitments so cannot get there.

Cheers!

Ann, it could be the heat over prolonged periods which has totally dried out the gum and made it a solid. For the gum to work it has to have a water content before you apply the lick ( I think that is also part of the reason that stamps with gum tend to be more susceptible to rust (Fungus). I have some P&S, still in the original booklet that won't stick to anything, even the backing sheet.

As to Tuesdays, well I think it is a hangover from Ron in the shop days. Will ask the others tomorrow about it.

You may find that over a long time it's the high constant heat that affects the usable stickyness when wet of the gum.

Tennant Creek = long hot seasons and dry weather.

So the same stamps stored in Sydney or Melbourne may eventually go off as well, but it may take 2 to 3 times longer to do.

Try licking the stamp but don't put in on a envelope, wait for say 30 seconds and test if it's gone sticky now after being "rehydrated".

Ann, some of my early, and even some of my more recent recent P&S stamps no longer stick to anything. They don't peel either - just fall off the backing paper.

from one GOW to another,
Ann, the glue on the P & S *will not* last more than 12-18 months in the best of conditions.....which Ten ant Creek is NOT  (sorry)

The glutinous substance (I won't call it adhesive) seems to dissolve over time. Like Norm, I have recent booklets where the stamps have fallen out

If it's any consolation - like heck it is - the 60c P & S haven't come off their backing......yet

Don't speed read posts all you GOMC and GOW! :D

Ann never said that they were P&S, she said "full gum". No one gives P&S stamps "a quick lick of the tongue"!
