This is the first of a series of threads that will hope to illustrate as many flaws as possible in their respective categories.

It will be followed by:
KGVI definitive plate varieties
KGVI commemorative plate varieties
QEII Pre decimal definitive plate varieties
QEII Pre decimal commemorative plate varieties

These threads are intended to complement existing catalogues by offering better quality scans than those currently available (and in some cases, flaws are not apparently illustrated in any form in print).
It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to which stamps a certain flaw appeared on - e.g. all the different colour/perf/wmk/overprint etc variants in which a particular design was issued - one illustration covers all.
As with other areas of the Wiki, it works like this:
1. Take good high resolution scans of the variety, not the whole stamp, preferably with the variety in the centre of the scan. I've started off with scans of my rather sparse collection at 800 dpi.
2. Post your scans & descriptions as replies to the thread
3. The scans will then be moved to the appropriate place in the thread & the original post will be deleted to keep the thread tidy (unless the post contains useful supplementary information).
4. Contributors will be acknowledged in this post, but not individually
5. Anyone wishing to contribute anonymously is welcome to contact me by email.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Thanks KGVnut. I've edited your pic into the appropriate spot (been abroad for a week, hence the delay).

The the lack of response to this thread surprises me, surely there must be plenty of members with something to add.

Hey Chris,

I can add most of these images but it will take a bit of time due to other committments. I'll start off by contributing with ACSC 136d.

And while I have access to a scanner here's ACSC 132g (Pl6/39) which I saw missing from the above collection.

As this appears on the same Imprint as 169g, it also comes from plate 1 UR.

Ok...last one for now.
Sorry for the extra work Chris :D

ACSC 169da This is the second state of the retouch on this cliche where the recutting is extended all the way down to the hedland from below "AGE" of "POSTAGE".

Also note the heavy retouch of the RHS inner frame.

Image

ACSC positions this as 1C/L28

Part 2 of this part of the Wiki, "KGVI Definitives" will be rolled out soon, so if anyone has any of these, I'll be on the hunt for scans.

Cheers
Chris

Strong retouch to first "A" of "AUSTRALIA"

Location 1C/L15

Note also the heavily retouched shading below "AU" which also defines this cliche.

Pl4/11 Re-entry lower frame

Hey Chris,

Just thought the Stampboard community may be interested in a few comments regarding this elusive Sturt variety.

ACSC states that 139d "Re-entry in lower frame" occurs at position Pl4/11. They also claim in the 2007 edition (latest version at this time) that the sheets are "12 horizontal rows of 10". This latter statement would put the variety in position 1 of the second row. As a result many people have bought the "Plate 4" block with the purpose of gaining this variety and have been sadly disappointed.

The reason is that the sheet layout is actually 10 horizontal rows of 12. This puts the affected cliche in the penultimate position of row 1. Thus a top RIGHT corner block of 4 provides the required positional piece.

Plate 4 contains quite a few bottom frame re-entries...some full length, others only partial. Of the 3 most prominent full length examples, cliche 11 is definitely the best followed closely by cliche 10 which I believe also deserves catalogue status. Visually cliche 7 follows a distant third.

Images of these three to follow...

Here are the 3 most prominent re-entries for plate 4.

This should help members differentiate between them when studying single copies. Note that cliche 11 is the only one that CLEARLY illustrates a FULL length doubling of the frame.

Is that big gap in the outer frame beside the 3d a constant?

The gap is not constant, just a freak of printing.

These "missing frames" were notorious around this time and many issues suffered from poor ink transference.
