Saw Kylie Minogue a week ago at Sun City, I think it was the best concert ever. It was just amazing, more like a dance spectacular than just a music show. Saw U2 in March at the World Cup stadium in Johannesburg, 100 000 people in attendance, was a great vibe, but just not the same. I think Kylie beat U2!

Helen Redy
Malissa Ethrich
Crowded House
Marcia Hines
Crosby,Stils@Nash
Brian Cadd

I just saw Elton John play solo last night in Windsor Ontario. What a schedule he has. He's playing out in Prince Edward Island, then down in Rio, then to Las Vegas, all within a few days.

I worked on and off with all of these people/bands. This was in the days when you would work a half hour set, and then move on to another venue and do another half hour.

The sixties/seventies scene in Australia was really great. You not only saw these bands, but you worked with them on the same stage and the same night. We used to work with The Twilights, The Loved Ones, The Groop, we backed Wendy Saddington once (nobody but me will remember her, but boy, could she drink) and Stevie Wright once after the Easybeats broke up...

At smaller venues, especially places in Melbourne, as in Underground venues in Flinders Lane ("Catcher" is one name I remember), and the Summer Holiday "resorts" - Angelsea, Ocean Grove, Lorne, Torquay, Barwon Heads, Portarlington... there were always a few mobs of people who decided that "bash the band up" was the order of the day.

Microphone stands were much loved by musos in those days. They were long, big, pretty heavy, and usually worked rather well for their secondary purpose.

Went and saw Roger Waters 'The Wall' last night at the Burswood Dome in Perth. What a great show.

We went to the West Coast Blues and Roots festival yesterday afternoon down in Fremantle. Got to see Robert Plant, Status Quo, Chris Isaac amongst others.

I tried hard not to expect too much from Plant and was not disappointed. He still has That Voice and the highlight for me was Going to California. Amazing.

Would have liked to have gone today to see Santana, Paul Simon, Ben Harper, Steve Miller etc but at $300 for a weekend ticket...

I'll try and post a few pics later

I saw Prince in Melbourne on May 15th Last year. He was beyond amazing, a true show man, who had no less than 5 encores. Everyone was on their feet the whole time and he just plkayed and danced and played and has the most awesome backing band.

He is a musical genius and a consummate entertainer.

Also saw Elton John in Auckland back in May 2008, the concert was very expensive and in a crappy venue (Vector Arena) but damn it was good, Elton was on fire, he played all the classics was jumping around the stage and hammering the piano keys, he had his guitarist from the 70s and his drummer and both of them could play, Everyone was dancing including my partner who was 67 then (He's nearly 72 now and he would do it again, if Elton came back).

What else, I saw a Cher concert at North Harbour Stadium (North Shore city - Auckland) in 2005, which was open air and alright, but a bit overproduced and very generic.

I'm off to see Black Sabbath at the new Perth Arena this evening. I've only heard good reviews for this tour so far so am really excited!

I'll be the happiest man if I get to hear Fairies Wear Boots and Sympton of the Universe. I'll report back later :D

First concert was when I was at secondary school - saw Judas Priest at Sheffield city Hall. Thought i was going to keel over from the loudness of it all. Others - Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Thunder, Black Crowes etc.

My first concert was Pink Floyd the "division bells" tour. I was 11yrs old. I have seen Ozzy 3 different times. Poison was a favorite. Metallica. Loved Kid Rock. Melissa Etheridge. Pantarra. A ton of summer Jams. My brother used to take guitar lessons from the lead guitar player for the band Morning Star.

I also partied with Tech 9 before he was famous. And talked to him a couple of times after he got his break. (He was nicer than everyone thinks he is IMO) He helped me carry my bags out to my truck after work.

Little John and the East side Boys were a fun group. Pretty Rowdy I thought but definitively nice to me.

The rap group Nappy Roots did not like me because I was white. Did not like my friend either because she was Mexican. So needless to say I stopped listening to their music because I did not enjoy the racist attitude that they gave to me.
Though every one is entitled to feel the way they want.
I love music!!

I was lucky enough to see the Prince of Darkness himself with Black Sabbath last Saturday night in Perth. It was a small pity that the original drummer, Bill Ward, could not tour.

The new Perth Arena has only been open for around 6 months. The costs for building it blew out by nearly double as I recall and there was a lot of noise about the ugliness of the design during construction.

It has really come up a treat though;

And this is playing with the focus on my iPhone to create a burning cross effect

Waiting for Shihad to open;

Shihad were the first band I ever saw live. It would have been around 1994 at the Stomach in Palmerston North. They were playing with Supergroove at “5 bands for 5 bucks” - those were the days 8)

And on to the main event!

Image

Image

It was incredible to be there and to hear a lot of their hits. No Sweet Leaf, but from the opening sirens of War Pigs through Fairies Wear Boots and the rest of the ride to the encore, Paranoid, it was a spectacular show. Ozzy just slips into autopilot for all the old Sabbath hits and only struggled a little with two from the new album (and that is being picky). If you get a chance GO!

Would LOVE to see Ozzy live, last live act I saw was George Clinton at the HMV arena near Camden, London last year.

So disappointed, his voice has long gone and most of the backing singers did the lead vocals, it's a pity seeing one of your favorites milk the fans for one final payday.

Over the years though I've seen David Lee Roth, Faith no more, Skid row, White Lion, Motley Crew, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Bob Dylan, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and been to Glastonbury and Phoenix festivals a few times, with too many acts to mention.

Either live music isn't what it used to be, or more likely I'm not what I used it be!

Some great guitarists in that list Sukhothai.

The most recent I have seen out of that list was Faith No More at Soundwave 2010. That was an awesome show! Mike Patton started slowly (and cynically) but warmed to the crowd a few songs in. I was so surprised to hear their cover of "I started a joke" and they played all the crowd favourites as well.

Ewan, I haven't seen Faith No More since they reformed, saw a great live version of 'Chariots of fire' that runs into 'Strip search' on YouTube they actually look better without Jim Martin on guitar, more together.

Can't wait to hear their new material, even though the old stuff still sounds great. Wouldn't mind seeing Van Halen live now that Diamond Dave is back with them, Eddie is one of my guitar heroes and I have never seen him play.

Dave has a podcast that he does that is worth a listen, 58 years old and still kicking it like a 30 year old!

The last concert I saw was Bruce Springsteen about a month ago. Great show. I don't know how he does it! He's the same age as my Mum, but he has more energy than I ever had.

Other edited highlights:

6th row at Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge tour at the SCG. You need to see the joy on Keith Richards' face as he plays to an audience.

Paul McCartney in c1995 was one of the best shows I have ever seen. He has a stage presence that is unequalled.

I saw Guns and Roses in 1987 or '88- before they got 'up themselves' and while they were still working hard.

I have seen AC/DC in stadiums and smaller venues. Usually I like a smaller show - but they really know how to do a stadium gig.

Lou Reed - unbelievable live. He hardly moves on stage or has any interaction with the audience - yet he captivates everyone there. The last time I saw him, he was doing a 'noise music' show with the Metal Machine Trio at the Sydney Opera House. The advertising asked 'Are you hard enough to stay for the whole show' - or words to that effect. Ushers were handing out ear plugs. I stayed and I loved it.

There have been many others - but these stand out as highlights.

I haven't seen a lot of bands live but above 40 years ago (for a Uni breakup) 6 of us went to a pub in Bulleen (Sentimental Bloke??). The band playing there that night was AC/DC & us 6 were the only people in the audience.

These days I kinda sorta manage a singer, Renata Sajko, she has a semi regular gig at the Black Rock Yacht Club.

Image

She has a cd (Hidden Gems) out which if you would like one, I can send for $15 plus postage. Email me if you are interested.

Check out her website:
